The Man Who Pulls Down the Hall

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: In a rich household's courtyard by the bare timber frame of a new hall, a stout official in a square cap and wide-sleeved robe, cup in hand, turns his head toward the gate, while a laughing guest beside a laden feast table raises a cup to toast him and a plain oil seller with a shoulder pole and two buckets walks in through the open gate.

Minister He was a man of Pingyin. His first post was as a county magistrate in Qin. An oil seller there was guilty of some petty offence and answered back bluntly. Minister He, in a rage, had him flogged to death. Later He rose to the Board of Appointments, and his family grew rich. He built a tall hall. On the day the ridgepole went up, his kinsmen and guests raised their cups to congratulate him. Suddenly he saw the oil seller walk in. He was secretly alarmed and puzzled. A moment later word came that his concubine had given birth to a son. His face fell. “The hall isn’t even finished, and the man who will pull it down is already here!” People thought he was joking. They did not know he had truly seen something. When the son grew up, he was as unruly as a boy could be, and he squandered the family fortune. He hired himself out as a labourer, and whenever he earned a few coppers, he bought sesame oil and ate it.
