Zhang’s Wife

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a sunny summer day beside a treeless country highway, a young countrywoman in a kerchief sits on a flat stone with a sewing basket at her feet, calmly embroidering, while a mounted soldier in a felt cap and quilted coat, riding on past, turns in the saddle with a grin and raises a hand to call out to her, with sorghum fields, a reedy puddle, distant village roofs and a city wall behind.

Wherever a great army goes, it does more harm than bandits. People can at least treat bandits as enemies; soldiers are enemies no one dares to treat as such. The one small way they differ from bandits is that they do not kill quite so lightly. In the jiayin year, when the Three Feudatories rose in revolt, troops on the southern campaign were quartering their horses in Yanzhou Prefecture. Not a chicken, a dog or a house was left untouched, and every woman was raped. It was a time of endless rain, and the water standing in the fields had turned them into lakes. The people had nowhere to hide, so they climbed over the walls into the sorghum. The soldiers found out. They stripped naked, rode their horses into the water, and hunted the women down to rape them. Few got away. Only Zhang’s wife would not hide. She stayed openly at home. She had a kitchen hut. One night she and her husband dug a pit in it several feet deep and heaped it with thatch. Over that they laid a reed screen, with a mat on top, so that it looked like a place to sleep. She went on cooking at the stove. When soldiers came, she went out the door to wait on them. Two Mongol soldiers tried to force her. “How can a thing like this be done in front of someone else?” she said. One of them grinned, jabbered something, and went out. She went into the room with the other and pointed to the mat for him to get on first. The screen snapped and the soldier fell in. She took another mat and another screen and laid them over the pit, then stood at its edge on purpose to lure the next one. Shortly the other came back in. He heard howling from the pit but could not tell where it came from. She beckoned him with a smile. “Over here.” The soldier stepped on the mat and fell in too. Then she threw more firewood in on them and tossed in fire. The fire blazed up and the hut burned. Then she cried for help. When the fire was out, there was a stench of burnt corpses. People asked her about it. “I had two pigs,” she said. “I was afraid the soldiers would get them, so I put them in the pit.” After that she would go several li from the village to a stretch of the highway with no trees at all, and sit there in the blazing sun with her needlework. The village was far from the prefectural city, and the soldiers came mostly on horseback, several passing in a moment. They laughed and jabbered; she understood little of it, but it was mostly teasing. Still, she was close to the road and there was nothing to hide behind, so they always rode on. For several days she came to no harm. One day a soldier came who had no shame at all and wanted to rape her right there in the blazing sun. She smiled and did not resist much. Secretly she pricked his horse with a needle. The horse snorted and neighed, so the soldier tied its reins to his thigh before taking hold of her. She pulled out a large awl and stabbed the horse hard in the neck. The horse bolted in pain and terror. With the reins tied to his thigh, he could not get free. It dragged him dozens of li before his comrades caught it for him. Where his head and body were, no one knew. On the reins, a single thigh was still there, plain to see.
