Li Xiangxian was a well-known man of Shouguang. In his former life he had been the kitchen monk at a certain temple, and he died without any illness. His soul left his body and perched on top of a memorial arch. Looking down, he saw that every person walking in the market had a glow of fire rising from the crown of the head: this was the yang energy in their bodies. When night fell, he thought he could not stay long on the arch, but every house was dark and he did not know where to go. Only one house still had a lamp burning, and he drifted toward it. When he reached the door, he was already an infant. His mother gave him the breast. The sight of it terrified him, but his belly could not bear the hunger, so he shut his eyes and forced himself to suck. After a little more than three months he would suckle no longer; when she offered the breast, he cried in terror. His mother fed him rice broth mixed with dates and chestnuts, and so he grew up. This was Xiangxian. As a boy he went to that temple and could call each of the monks by name. Even in old age he was still afraid of breasts.
