The Earthquake

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: by candlelight in a study, two scholars sit at a small table as the room shakes, a wine cup tipped over and spilling, the candle flame wavering; one looks up at the beams where dust falls, the other braces both hands on the table edge, startled.

On the seventeenth day of the sixth month in the seventh year of the Kangxi reign, at the hour of xu, there was a great earthquake. I happened to be staying at Jixia, and was sitting over wine by candlelight with my cousin Li Duzhi. Suddenly we heard a sound like thunder, coming from the southeast and going off to the northwest. Everyone was startled and could not tell what it was. In a moment the tables began to rock and pitch, and the wine cups tipped over; the beams, rafters and pillars of the house cracked and snapped with a loud noise. We looked at one another and went pale. Only after a long while did we understand that it was an earthquake, and we all rushed outside. We saw towers and houses fall over and rise up again. The crash of falling walls and caving roofs, with children crying and women wailing, was like a cauldron on the boil. People were so dizzy they could not stand; they sat on the ground and rolled this way and that as it moved. The river slopped out over its banks a good ten feet, and the whole city was full of crowing cocks and barking dogs. After two hours or more it began to settle a little. Looking out into the streets, we saw men and women gathered there naked, all talking at once, every one of them forgetting they had no clothes on. Later I heard that in one place a well had tilted over so that no water could be drawn from it; that in one house a tower had turned round, its south side now facing north; that Mount Qixia had split open; and that at Yishui the ground had sunk into a pit several mu across. This was truly an extraordinary upheaval.

There was a woman of my county who got up in the night to relieve herself. When she came back, a wolf had her child in its jaws. She quickly fought the wolf for him. The moment the wolf loosened its jaws, she snatched the child out and held him in her arms. The wolf crouched there and would not go. The woman screamed, the neighbours came running, and only then did the wolf go away. When her fright had passed she grew cheerful, and pointing at the sky and drawing on the ground, she told them how the wolf had held the child in its jaws and how she had snatched him back. After a good while she suddenly realized she had not a stitch on, and ran. She was just like the men and women in the earthquake, who all forgot alike. How laughable people are when panic leaves them with no wits at all!
