The Mountain Goblin

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a summer night in a mountain-temple study, a young scholar in a loose gown kneels up on his bed and slashes a short knife at the round belly of a huge stooping ogre in a ragged hide tunic and boots, who raises one clawed hand beneath the roof beam, with a moonlit lattice window, a desk with books and a lamp, and an open door behind.

Sun Taibai used to tell this story. His great-grandfather was once studying at Liugou Temple on South Mountain. At the wheat harvest he went home, and it was ten days before he came back. When he opened the door of his study, there was dust on the desk and the window was thick with cobwebs. He had his servant sweep the place out, and not until evening was it clean and fresh enough to sit in. Then he dusted off the bed, laid out his bedding, bolted the door and lay down. Moonlight already filled the window. He tossed and turned for a while. All was utterly still. Suddenly he heard a rumbling wind, and the temple gate banged open. He supposed the monks had forgotten to bar it. While he was still thinking this, the sound of the wind came closer to his lodging, and the next moment the door of his rooms flew open. He was very puzzled. Before he could make anything of it, the sound was inside the house; and there was a heavy clumping of boots too, coming nearer and nearer to the bedroom door. Now he began to be afraid. The next moment the bedroom door opened. He looked up quickly. A huge fiend was squeezing in, stooped double; then it stood up straight before the bed, nearly as tall as the roof beam. Its face was the colour of old melon rind. Its eyes glittered and flashed as it looked all round the room. It opened a mouth as big as a basin, with sparse teeth some three inches long. Its tongue worked and its throat rumbled, a rasping, hoarse sound that echoed from all four walls. Sun’s great-grandfather was terrified. But in so small a space, he thought, there was no way to escape; he had better strike at it. Stealthily he slid from under his pillow the knife he wore at his belt, whipped it from its sheath and slashed at the fiend. He hit it in the belly, and it rang like a stone crock. The fiend flew into a rage and reached out a huge claw to seize him. He shrank back a little. The fiend caught the quilt instead, tore it away, and went off in a fury. He was dragged along with the quilt and fell to the floor, where he lay face down, howling. The household came running with lights, but the door was shut as before. They forced their way in through the window and were horrified at what they saw. They helped him up and hauled him back onto the bed, and only then could he tell them what had happened. They all looked: the quilt was caught in the crack of the bedroom door. They opened the door and held up the light, and found claw marks as big as a winnowing basket; where each of the five fingers had pressed, it had gone right through. At daybreak he dared not stay any longer, but shouldered his book box and went home. Afterwards he asked the monks, but nothing else strange had happened there.
