Chapter Ninety-Eight · The Three Heroes and Five Gallants

Sha Long is hemmed in, and mother and daughter meet again;Zhi Hua lays the plans, and his sworn brothers fight bravely

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in an inner room of a manor, the girl Mudan, holding a tea tray from which two cups are tumbling, has stopped in the doorway; her little brother Jin Zhang kneels hugging her legs with a happy cry, her tearful mother Madam He rushes forward with both arms spread, and an old village woman holds up the door curtain at the right, mouth open in astonishment.

Now, Fengxian and Qiukui came fighting in from the west. Qiukui whirled her iron club, and with a great clatter and crash she sent the lackeys flying in all directions. Fengxian drew her pellet bow and loosed pellet after pellet, so that the lackeys ducked and hid this way and that. Then came shouting from the east as well: it was Jiao Chi charging in, steel trident in hand, yelling and cursing as he came. Inside the ring, Sha Long and Meng Jie saw the lackeys thrown into confusion and fought their way outward with all their might. Attacked from within and without, how could the lackeys hold? They split to left and right and opened a broad road. Fengxian and Qiukui met Sha Long just then, and Jiao Chi came up too, and they all found one another. “Fengxian,” said Sha Long, “what are you two girls doing here?” “We heard Father was caught in a fight with the mountain bandits,” said Qiukui, “so the two of us came to help.” Sha Long was about to speak when from the hilltop came a rumbling of drums like thunder, and from every mouth of the hills the gongs crashed, clang, clang, clang, deafening the ear, and voices shouted, “Take him! Don’t let Sha Long get away! The Great King says: ‘No cold arrows! He’s to be taken alive!’ You there, Sha, you’ll never get away! There are men lying in wait everywhere! Give yourself up, and quick about it!” When Sha Long and the others heard this, they could not help being shaken to the core.

What, you may ask, was going on? Lan Xiao had secretly ordered his lackeys to hem Sha Long in. They were only to lure him on and never to close and fight. He meant to wear him out, then take him at a single drumbeat, bring him to heel and make him his own right-hand man. That was why he stood watching from the high ridge. Seeing that Sha Long and his companion were growing tired, he was delighted. Still, in case anything went wrong, he sent lackeys up the hill to call the chiefs of the four outposts and set them in ambush at the mouths of the hills. When they heard the drum, gongs were to sound together on all four sides and everyone was to shout at once, to put the fear into him. Then Lan Xiao would talk to him again, and there was no way Sha Long would refuse to come over. Suddenly he saw the ranks give way on the east and the west, the lackeys parting to left and right, and knew that help had come for Sha Long. So he beat his drum, and sure enough every mouth of the hills answered, shouting and making a great show, every voice crying to take Sha Long. Up on the high ridge he waved his command flag: when Sha Long made for the east, he pointed east; when Sha Long made for the west, he pointed west. Sha Long and his daughters, with Meng and Jiao, ran about for a long time, and every way they turned it was stones like a cloudburst or arrows like a swarm of locusts, and not a single man to stand and fight them. Run this way, run that, there was no way out. All they could do was gather, the five of them, in one place to rest and take counsel.

But let us leave Sha Long and the others in their trap for now. Our story turns back to the manor at Wohugou. Ever since Jiao Chi had escorted the mule litter into the manor, the wives and daughters of all the fishing and hunting families had known that an official’s lady had been rescued and brought in, and who would not want to see what an official’s lady looked like? They treated her like some rare curiosity. You came, I went, back and forth they streamed without end, yet none of them dared go up to her; they only peeked on the sly, clambering at the windows or lifting a corner of the door curtain, and the moment anyone inside caught sight of them, they ducked away. It was Zhang Li’s wife, Madam Li, who at Fengxian’s request did her utmost to see to everything. But she could not manage it all by herself: she had to attend to Madam He, attend to the little young gentleman Jin Zhang, and on top of that attend to the maids and serving women, and she was worn out. She came out and said to the women, “Aunties, sisters, instead of craning and peering out here, why don’t you go in and see her, keep her company and have a chat? Then I’d have someone to spell me.” None of them answered. Some waved their hands, some shook their heads, some shrank coyly out of sight, and some twittered and giggled. Seeing them like this, Madam Li turned in a huff and went back in through the side gate.
