Now, Shi Yun brought Jin Hui and Ding Xiong to the manor, and the manor hands reported it to Zhi Hua. Zhi Hua and Zhang Li came out to meet them in the main hall. Governor Jin did not ask what had become of his wife and son; he only thanked them for saving him. Zhi Hua, though, told him first of all that his lady and the young master were safe and well, to set the Governor’s mind at rest. After a little tea and a short rest, he had Zhang Li take the Governor to the back of the house to see his lady and son. By now Fengxian and her sister knew that mother and daughter had found each other, and were wishing them joy. Suddenly they heard that the Governor was coming in, and they went off with Mudan to the side court.

Which of the farm wives and the village girls did not want a look at the majesty of His Honour? Before long they saw Zhang Li bring in a man in a gauze hat with one of its wings missing; in a red robe, half its front flapping loose; with a jade belt at his waist, so tugged and twisted that it bulged in and out; with black boots on his feet, so ill-fitting that the soles had split and the uppers sagged; with a full grey beard, so rumpled that it bristled at the top and curled at the bottom; and with a face caked in dust, smeared pitch-black on the left and yellow on the right. At first sight you would have taken him for the pole-box official in a temple-fair parade; only on a closer look did you see that this was the newly appointed Governor Jin. At the sight of him in such a sorry state, the women covered their mouths one and all and tittered.

Madam He and the young master came out of the room to meet him, and when they saw him like this they were stricken with grief. Jin Zhang stepped forward to pay his respects; Lord Jin raised him up, and hand in hand they went into the room. Lord Jin told briefly how the mountain lord had waylaid him. Madam He told in full how their benefactors had rescued her. Husband and wife sighed over it all and were full of gratitude. Then all at once Jin Zhang said, “Father, now there’s a joy on top of the joy!” “What do you mean?” asked the Governor. Madam He told him how mother and daughter had found each other. “The very idea!” said the Governor in astonishment. “Can there be two Mudans?” With that he took Lord Shao’s letter from his breast and handed it to his wife to read. “There is more to it than that,” said Madam He. “At the start our daughter would not leave her own rooms, so her nurse came up with a plan: Jiahui was dressed up as our daughter, and our daughter changed into a maid. Who could have guessed they would fall in with a boat of robbers? Our daughter threw herself into the river to die. By great good fortune Old Zhang and his wife fished her out and saved her, and took her as their own daughter. If you don’t believe me, sir, look at these two garments. Mother Zhang brought them just now; they are what our daughter was wearing when she threw herself into the water.” Lord Jin picked them up and looked: sure enough, they were two garments of the kind a maid wears. He thought to himself, “So Mudan is not only pure but clever too. She has actually saved the good name of the Jin house — a rare thing indeed.” Then another thought came to him: “That handkerchief and the purple-gold fish came to me from Qiaoniang’s hands in the first place. Who’s to say that slut didn’t rig it all? And even when the jade hairpin turned up in the book chest, young Shi wasn’t the least bit afraid that I could see; he was as proud and haughty as ever. Thinking it over carefully, there must be some trickery in it. In a moment of anger I never stopped to tell black from white, and I wronged the two of them.” Then he remembered how he had pressed Mudan to take her own life, and that had been too cruel. Overcome with shame and remorse, he asked Madam He, “Where is our daughter now?” “She was here just now,” said Madam He, “but when she heard you had come, she went over to her adoptive mother’s.” “Jin Zhang,” said Lord Jin, “go with a maid and ask your sister to come.”
