Chapter One · Journey to the West

A spirit root is nurtured, and the source flows forth; The heart and nature are cultivated, and the Great Way is born

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on Flower-Fruit Mountain, the Stone Monkey leaps with his eyes shut toward a waterfall hanging like a curtain, while the other monkeys watch from the rocks below, clapping, pointing, shading their eyes and holding on to one another.

A poem says:

Before chaos parted, heaven and earth were tangled;vast and dim, they lay beyond all human sight. Then Pangu broke the primal darkness open;from that beginning, clear and turbid stood apart. All living things beneath and between them look to their supreme kindness;all things they bring to light become good.To know creation’s work through cycles great and small, read Journey to the West: The Tale of Deliverance from Ordeals.

It is said that, in the reckoning of heaven and earth, 129,600 years make one great cycle. Each great cycle is divided into twelve ages, named for the twelve earthly branches: zi, chou, yin, mao, chen, si, wu, wei, shen, you, xu and hai. Each age comprises 10,800 years. Take a single day for comparison: at zi the yang energy stirs, and at chou the cock crows; at yin no light has yet come through, and at mao the sun rises; at chen the morning meal is over, and at si the hours press onward; at wu the sun stands in midheaven, and at wei it slips westward; shen is late afternoon, and at you the sun sets; xu brings dusk, and at hai people settle down for the night. On the larger scale, by the end of the age of xu, heaven and earth grow dim and all things fall into decline. Another 5,400 years pass, bringing the beginning of the age of hai: darkness reigns, and neither people nor other creatures remain between heaven and earth. This is called chaos. After another 5,400 years, the age of hai draws to its end. Out of the closing phase a new beginning arises; as the age of zi approaches, light gradually returns. Shao Kangjie says:

“At the winter solstice, halfway through zi,Heaven’s heart does not shift or change. One thread of yang first stirs, while all things still await their birth.”

At this point heaven begins to take root. Another 5,400 years bring the age of zi itself. The light and clear rise upward, forming the sun, the moon, the stars and the constellations. Sun, moon, stars and constellations are called the four celestial forms. Hence the saying: heaven opens at zi. Another 5,400 years pass. The age of zi draws to an end, the age of chou approaches, and things gradually grow solid. The Book of Changes says: “Great indeed is the primal power of Qian! Supreme indeed is the primal power of Kun! All things draw on it for birth, and it obediently follows Heaven.” At this point earth begins to condense. Another 5,400 years bring the age of chou itself. The heavy and turbid settle downward, forming water, fire, mountains, stone and soil. Water, fire, mountains, stone and soil are called the five earthly forms. Hence the saying: earth is opened at chou. Another 5,400 years pass. The age of chou ends, the age of yin begins, and all things come to life. The calendar says: “Heaven’s energy descends, earth’s energy rises; heaven and earth unite, and all things are born.” At this point heaven is clear and earth is fresh, and yin and yang join together. Another 5,400 years bring the age of yin itself. Humans, beasts and birds are born: heaven, earth and humanity, the three powers, each take their appointed place. Hence the saying: humanity is born at yin.

After Pangu opened heaven and earth, the Three Sovereigns governed the world and the Five Emperors established the order of human relations. The world was then divided into four great continents: the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha, the Western Continent of Aparagodaniya, the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa and the Northern Continent of Uttarakuru. This book tells only of the Eastern Continent. Beyond the sea lay a land called the kingdom of Aolai. The kingdom stood beside a great sea, and in that sea rose a famous mountain called Flower-Fruit Mountain. This mountain was the ancestral vein of the Ten Isles, the source of the dragon veins of the Three Islands. It had stood since the clear and turbid first separated, and had taken shape when primal chaos was divided. What a fine mountain it was! There is a rhapsody to prove it. It says:

Its mass holds the ocean steady;its might brings peace to the jewelled sea.Its mass holds the ocean steady:tides surge in silver mountains and fish retreat to their holes. Its might brings peace to the jewelled sea:waves turn in snowy billows and giant clams leave the depths.High it piles up where water and fire have their quarters;lofty its summit rises in the East Sea.Crimson cliffs and strange rocks, sheer walls and wondrous peaks. On the crimson cliffs, bright phoenixes call in pairs;before the sheer walls,a qilin lies alone. From the peaks come frequent cries of golden pheasants;at the rocky caves, dragons are often seen passing in and out.In the woods live long-lived deer and immortal foxes;in the trees perch sacred birds and dark cranes.Jewelled grasses and rare flowers never fade;green pines and emerald cypresses keep an endless spring.Immortal peaches always bear fruit;tall bamboos forever hold the clouds.Dense vines fill a ravine;fresh grass clothes the banks on every side.Truly: a pillar that props the sky where a hundred rivers meet,a root of the earth unmoved through countless cosmic ages.

Right on the summit of that mountain stood an immortal stone. It was thirty-six and a half Chinese feet high and twenty-four feet round. Its height corresponded to the 365 degrees of the circuit of heaven; its girth to the twenty-four seasonal divisions of the calendar. It had nine cavities and eight openings, corresponding to the Nine Palaces and the Eight Trigrams. No trees stood on any side to shade it, though sacred fungi and fragrant orchids grew beside it. Ever since creation it had received the pure breath of heaven and the finest essence of earth, the strength of the sun and the radiance of the moon. After feeling their influence for so long, it acquired a spiritual awareness. An immortal embryo grew within it. One day the stone burst open and produced a stone egg, about the size of a round ball. The egg met the wind and changed into the Stone Monkey, with all five features and all four limbs complete. At once he learned to crawl and walk, and bowed to the four quarters. Two beams of golden light shot from his eyes and pierced the Palace of the Dipper. This startled the Supreme Sage of High Heaven, the Great Compassionate and Benevolent One, the Jade Emperor, Great Celestial Venerable, Exalted Sovereign of the Dark Firmament. Seated in the Hall of Divine Mists in the Cloud Palace of the Golden Gates, with his immortal ministers gathered round him, he saw the golden light blaze and ordered Thousand-League Eye and Wind-Borne Ear to open the Southern Gate of Heaven and look. The two generals obeyed, went outside the gate, saw clearly and heard distinctly. In a moment they returned to report: “Your servants have obeyed the command to look and listen where the golden light appeared. In the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha, within the little kingdom of Aolai east of the sea, there is a mountain called Flower-Fruit Mountain. On it stood an immortal stone, which produced an egg. The egg met the wind and became the Stone Monkey, who bowed to the four quarters and shot golden light from his eyes into the Palace of the Dipper. He is now taking food and water, and the golden light will soon die away.” The Jade Emperor graciously replied, “A creature of the lower world, born of the essence of heaven and earth. There is nothing remarkable in that.”

In the mountains the Stone Monkey learned to walk and leap. He ate plants, drank from the streams, picked mountain flowers and sought fruit in the trees. Wolves and other wild creatures were his companions, tigers and leopards his company, roe deer and deer his friends, macaques and apes his kin. At night he slept beneath rocky cliffs; in the morning he roamed the peaks and caves. Truly,

“In the mountains no one counts the passing cycles;winter ends, and no one knows the year.”

One hot day he and the other monkeys took shelter from the heat and played beneath the pines. Look at them, every one:

Leaping into trees, climbing branches, picking flowers, hunting fruit;tossing pellets, playing with tiles;running through sandy hollows, building pagodas;chasing dragonflies, swatting insects;paying respects to old Heaven, bowing to Bodhisattvas;pulling down vines, weaving grass sashes;catching lice, biting and pinching them;grooming their coats, picking at their nails. Some pressed close, some rubbed against each other;some shoved, some sat on the others;some tugged, some pulled.Under the green pines they played as they pleased, beside the green stream they washed as they wished.

After playing for a while, the monkeys went to bathe in the mountain stream. The water rushed along, tumbling and splashing like rolling melons. As the old saying goes, “Birds have their own speech, beasts their own language.” The monkeys all said, “Where does this water come from? We’ve nothing to do today. Let’s follow the bank upstream and find its source — it’ll be fun!” With a shout, males and females in tow, brothers calling to brothers, they all ran off together. They climbed the mountain beside the stream until they reached its source: a waterfall, a flying torrent. This is what they saw:

A white rainbow rises in a single sweep;snowy waves fly a thousand fathoms down. The sea wind cannot break it;the river moon shines on its unbroken flow. Its chill divides the green peaks;its runoff moistens the emerald slopes. This rushing water is called a waterfall:it truly hangs like a curtain.

The monkeys clapped and cried, “Fine water! Fine water! So this reaches right down to the foot of the mountain and joins the waves of the great sea.” Then they said, “Whoever has the skill to go through, find the source and come back unharmed — we’ll bow to him as our king.” They called this out three times. Suddenly the Stone Monkey sprang from the crowd and shouted back, “I’ll go in! I’ll go in!” What a monkey! For him, too:

Today his glorious name is made known;his hour has come, his great good fortune opens.Fate has brought him to this place;Heaven sends him into an immortal palace.

Watch him close his eyes, crouch low and launch himself straight into the waterfall. Suddenly he opened his eyes and raised his head to look. Inside there was neither water nor wave, only a bridge, plainly visible in the light. He stopped, steadied himself and looked more closely: it was a bridge of iron plates. The water beneath it ran through a hole in the rock and poured out in a hanging sheet, hiding the bridge’s entrance. He straightened up, stepped onto the bridge and went on looking as he walked. It seemed just like a place where people lived. What a fine spot! This is what he saw:

Green moss heaps up its blue-green colour; white clouds float like jade; light shimmers through drifting mists.Open windows, quiet rooms;smooth benches, slabs patterned like flowers. In milky grottoes dragon pearls cling and hang;rare blossoms wind across the floor.Pots and stoves beside the cliff still bear traces of fire;wine jars by the table still hold scraps of food.Stone seats and stone beds are lovely to see;stone basins and stone bowls deserve still greater praise. Here are one or two tall bamboos, there three or five plum blossoms.A few green pines forever glisten with rain:altogether, it looks like someone’s home.

After looking for a long time, he leaped across the middle of the bridge and glanced to either side. Right in the centre stood a stone tablet, carved with a line of large characters in regular script: “The blessed land of Flower-Fruit Mountain, the cave heaven of the Water-Curtain Cave.”

The Stone Monkey was beside himself with joy. He hurried back outside, closed his eyes and crouched again, and leaped out through the water. Giving two great laughs, he cried, “What luck! What luck!” The monkeys crowded round him and asked, “What’s it like inside? How deep is the water?” The Stone Monkey said, “No water! No water! There’s a bridge of iron plates, and on the other side a whole home made by heaven and earth.” “How do you know it’s a home?” the monkeys asked. The Stone Monkey laughed. “This water flows under the bridge, rushes through a hole in the rock and hangs down to hide the doorway. Beside the bridge there are flowers and trees, and a house of stone. Inside are stone pots, stone stoves, stone bowls, stone basins, stone beds and stone benches. In the middle stands a stone tablet, carved with ‘The blessed land of Flower-Fruit Mountain, the cave heaven of the Water-Curtain Cave.’ It’s just the place for us to settle. There’s plenty of room inside, enough for hundreds and thousands, old and young. If we all go in and live there, we won’t have to put up with Heaven’s moods any more. In there:

When the wind blows, there is shelter;when rain falls, a safe retreat. No fear of frost or snow;no sound of thunder, ever.Bright mists shine forever;auspicious vapours always rise.Pine and bamboo flourish year by year;rare flowers are fresh each day.”

Every monkey was delighted to hear this. “You go first again,” they all said. “Take us in! Take us in!” The Stone Monkey closed his eyes, crouched and leaped inside once more, calling, “Follow me in, all of you! Come in!” The bold monkeys jumped straight through. The timid ones poked out their heads and drew back their necks, scratched their ears and cheeks, and yelled at the tops of their voices. After fussing for a while, they too all went in. They leaped past the end of the bridge and began snatching basins, grabbing bowls, claiming stoves and fighting over beds, moving things here and shifting them there. Such is the unruly nature of monkeys: not a moment’s peace. Only when their strength was spent and their spirits worn out did they stop. The Stone Monkey sat upright in the place of honour and said, “Gentlemen, ‘If a man cannot be trusted, I don’t see how he can get anywhere.’ You just said that whoever could come in and go out unharmed would be your king. Now I’ve come in and gone out, gone out and come in, and found you this cave heaven, where every one of you can sleep safe and sound and enjoy the comfort of a home. Why haven’t you bowed to me as your king?” At this the monkeys bowed low without objection. They lined up in order of age and made their obeisance, all hailing him as “Great King, may you live a thousand years!” From then on the Stone Monkey occupied his royal throne. He dropped the word “Stone” from his title and was called the Handsome Monkey King (Meihouwang). There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:

Three yang powers join in harmony to bring forth living things;the immortal stone’s womb holds the essence of sun and moon.Through an egg a monkey takes shape and completes the Great Way;through his name and surname the elixir is perfected.Look within: it cannot be known, for it has no form;join it to what lies without: it is clearly known, for it takes shape.Through every age, all people belong to this;as kings or sages, they may range at will.

The Handsome Monkey King led his band of apes, macaques and big monkeys, assigning the places of ruler, ministers, aides and messengers. By day they roamed Flower-Fruit Mountain; at night they slept in the Water-Curtain Cave. Bound by a common feeling, they kept apart from the flocks of birds and the herds of beasts. He was king in his own right, and their happiness knew no bounds. Thus:

In spring they pick a hundred flowers for their food;in summer they seek all kinds of fruit to live on.In autumn they gather taro and chestnuts to last the season;in winter they find Solomon’s seal to carry them through the year.

The Handsome Monkey King enjoyed his innocent pleasures for three or five hundred years — who would have expected it? One day, in the midst of a merry feast with the monkeys, he suddenly grew troubled and began to weep. The monkeys hurried to bow around him. “Great King, what troubles you?” The Monkey King said, “Happy as I am now, there’s something ahead that worries me. That is what troubles me.” The monkeys laughed again. “Great King, you really don’t know when you’re well off! Every day we make merry together in this immortal mountain, this blessed land, this ancient cave on a sacred continent. No qilin rules us, no phoenix commands us, and no human king holds us in his power. We are free to do as we please — a blessing beyond measure. Why fret over what lies ahead?” The Monkey King said, “Today we are beyond the laws of human kings and have no fear of the might of birds or beasts. But when we grow old and our blood runs thin, that old fellow the King of the Underworld will be ruling us unseen. Once we die, won’t our birth into this world have been wasted, since we cannot remain for ever among gods and men?” At these words every monkey covered his face and wept, all of them troubled by mortality.

Suddenly a long-armed ape sprang from the ranks and cried out in a loud, sharp voice, “Great King, if you can think so far ahead, then truly your heart has awakened to the Way. Of the five kinds of creature, only three sorts are beyond that old King of the Underworld’s rule.” “Do you know which three?” asked the Monkey King. The ape said, “Buddhas, immortals and divine sages. They escape the wheel of rebirth, are neither born nor destroyed, and live as long as heaven and earth, mountains and rivers.” “Where do these three live?” asked the Monkey King. The ape said, “Only in the world of Jambudvipa, in ancient caves and immortal mountains.” The Monkey King was filled with joy. “Tomorrow I’ll take leave of you and go down the mountain. I’ll wander to the corners of the sea and travel to the ends of the earth. I must find these three and learn how to live for ever without growing old, and always escape the troubles the King of the Underworld brings.” Ah! These very words brought him straight out of the net of rebirth and made him the Great Sage Equal to Heaven (Qitian Dasheng). The monkeys clapped and cheered. “Wonderful! Wonderful! Tomorrow we’ll cross the ridges and climb the mountains, gather plenty of fruit, and lay a great farewell feast for our king.”

Next day the monkeys did indeed go out to pick immortal peaches and rare fruits, dig up yams and grub out Solomon’s seal. Sacred fungi, orchids and fragrant herbs, jewelled grasses and rare flowers — every kind was set out in good order. They arranged stone benches and tables and laid out immortal wines and dishes. This is what they saw:

Golden pellets, pearly balls; red fruit bursting, yellow fruit plump.Golden pellets and pearly balls were winter cherries, their colour lovely, their taste sweet;the bursting red and plump yellow were ripe plums, fragrant and tart.Fresh longans, with sweet flesh and thin skins;fiery lychees, with small stones and red husks.Green crabapples were offered still on their branches; yellow loquats were held up with their leaves.Rabbit-head pears and chicken-heart dates quenched thirst, eased fretting and cleared a drunken head.Fragrant peaches and ripe apricots, sweet as jade nectar and jewelled wine;crisp plums and waxberries, tart as rich cream and curds.Ripe watermelons with red flesh and black seeds; great persimmons with four lobes and yellow skins.Split pomegranates showed grains of cinnabar, beads of fiery crystal;opened taro and chestnuts revealed firm lumps of flesh like golden agate.Walnuts and ginkgo nuts went with tea; coconuts and grapes could be made into wine.Hazelnuts, pine nuts, torreya nuts and apples filled the platters; tangerines, sugar cane, mandarins and oranges covered the tables.Yams roasted through, Solomon’s seal boiled soft.Poria fungus and Job’s tears were pounded and slowly simmered into soup in stone pots over a low fire.Though the human world may have its finest delicacies, how could they match these mountain monkeys’ joy and peace?

The monkeys seated the Handsome Monkey King in the place of honour and took their places below him according to age and seniority. One by one they came forward to offer wine, flowers and fruit, and they drank their fill all day.

Next morning the Handsome Monkey King rose early and gave his orders: “Little ones, break off some dead pine branches for me and bind them into a raft. Fetch a bamboo pole to punt with and pack some fruit and such things. I’m leaving.” Then he boarded the raft alone and pushed off with all his strength. Bobbing and drifting, he headed straight into the waves of the great sea and rode the wind from heaven toward the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa. Of this departure, truly:

The heaven-born immortal monkey, mighty in the Way,leaves his mountain on a raft and rides the wind from heaven.Over the waves and across the sea he seeks the immortals’ Way,his purpose firm, his heart intent on a great achievement. With his allotted fate and destined ties, he puts aside worldly wishes;free of worry, free of care, he meets the primal dragon.Surely he will find one who understands him,who will reveal the source and make all methods clear.

His hour had come and his luck was good. From the day he boarded his wooden raft, a strong southeasterly wind blew day after day and carried him to the shore in the northwest, within the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa. Probing the water with his pole, he happened on a shallow place, abandoned the raft and jumped ashore. Along the beach he saw people fishing, shooting wild geese, digging for clams and gathering salt. He went up to them and played a trick, putting on a fierce look that frightened them into dropping their baskets and abandoning their nets. They scattered in all directions. He caught one who could not run away, stripped off the man’s clothes and put them on himself, as people did. Swaying and swaggering, he passed through provinces and prefectures, learning human manners and human speech in the marketplaces. He found meals by day and lodging by night, his whole mind set on asking about the ways of Buddhas, immortals and divine sages, and finding a means to live for ever without growing old. He saw that everyone was chasing fame and profit; not one cared for life itself. Truly:

When will the scramble for fame and profit end? Up early, late to bed, never free!Riding a donkey or mule, they long for a fine horse;made chief minister, they dream of being princes and lords.Food and clothing are their only worry, and keep them slaving;what care they if the King of the Underworld comes to summon them? They scheme for wealth and rank to pass to sons and grandsons;not one is willing to turn back.

The Monkey King sought out the way of immortals, but had no luck in finding it. Roaming great walled cities and little counties in the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa, he spent eight or nine years there without noticing. Suddenly he came to the great western ocean. He thought there must be immortals beyond the sea, so alone, as before, he made a raft and drifted across the West Sea until he reached the Western Continent of Aparagodaniya. Once ashore, he searched far and wide for a long time. Then he came upon a tall, beautiful mountain, with deep, secluded woods about its foot. Fearing neither wolves nor other wild creatures, nor tigers nor leopards, he climbed to the summit and looked around. It was indeed a fine mountain:

A thousand peaks stand ranked like halberds; cliffs ten thousand fathoms high unfold like screens.Sunlight catches the mountain haze, lightly veiling its green; after rain, the dark blue slopes hold a cool green glow.Thin vines wind round ancient trees; an old ferry marks the secluded way.Rare flowers and auspicious grasses, tall bamboos and towering pines.Tall bamboos and towering pines, evergreen for ten thousand years, outdo the blessed lands;rare flowers and auspicious grasses, unfading through the seasons, surpass Penglai and Yingzhou.Close by, hidden birds are singing; clear springs sound as they flow.Orchids and sacred fungi fringe ravine after ravine; moss grows on every jagged cliff. These rolling ridges have a fine dragon vein: surely some lofty master lives here, his name concealed.

As he looked, he suddenly heard someone speaking deep in the woods. He hurried into the forest and listened closely: it was a voice singing. The song went:

“Watching chess, the axe handle rots; chopping wood, the blows ring clear; slowly I walk by the valley mouth beneath the clouds.I sell firewood and buy wine, laughing wildly to make my own heart glad.On a green path in clear autumn I face the moon, pillow my head on a pine root and sleep till dawn.Back to the familiar woods, up cliffs and over ridges, axe in hand I cut dead vines.I gather them into a load, sing as I walk to market and trade them for three measures of rice. There is no wrangling, no contention;the going price is fair.I know no plots or clever schemes;free of honour and disgrace, I live my quiet life. Those I meet are immortals or men of the Way; we sit in peace and discuss the Yellow Court Scripture.”

Hearing this, the Handsome Monkey King was filled with joy. “So this is where an immortal is hiding!” He leaped into the woods and looked more closely. It was a woodcutter, raising his axe to chop firewood. But his dress was remarkable:

On his head a bamboo-leaf hat, made of sheaths newly shed by young shoots. On his body a cloth coat, woven from cotton yarn.Round his waist a looped sash, made of silk spun from old silkworms’ mouths. On his feet grass sandals, twisted from dry sedge. In his hand an axe of pure steel;for hauling his load, a hemp rope.Pulling down pine branches, splitting dead trees —who could match this woodcutter’s skill?

The Monkey King came up and called, “Venerable immortal, your disciple pays his respects.” The woodcutter hastily dropped his axe, turned and returned the greeting. “I’m not worthy, not worthy! I’m a simple fellow who can barely feed and clothe himself. How could I dare accept the name ‘immortal’?” The Monkey King said, “If you’re not an immortal, how can you speak an immortal’s words?” “What immortal’s words did I speak?” asked the woodcutter. The Monkey King said, “I had just reached the edge of the woods when I heard you say, ‘Those I meet are immortals or men of the Way; we sit in peace and discuss the Yellow Court Scripture.’ The Yellow Court Scripture contains the true words of the Way and its virtue. If you’re not an immortal, what are you?” The woodcutter laughed. “To tell you the plain truth, that song is called ‘Fragrance Fills the Courtyard’. An immortal taught it to me. He’s a neighbour of mine. He saw how hard I had to work for my household and how I worried every day, so he told me to recite this song whenever I was troubled: first to ease my mind, and then to relieve my weariness. Just now I was fretting over something I lacked, so I recited it. I never expected you to hear.” The Monkey King said, “Since you live next door to an immortal, why not practise with him? Wouldn’t it be a fine thing to learn how never to grow old?” The woodcutter said, “My life has always been hard. My parents raised me till I was eight or nine, just old enough to understand things, when sadly my father died and my mother was left a widow. I have no brothers or sisters, only myself, so there was nothing for it but to care for her morning and night. Now she is old, and I dare leave her less than ever. Our fields lie waste, and we haven’t enough for food and clothing. All I can do is chop two bundles of firewood, carry them to market and sell them for a few copper coins, then buy a few measures of rice. I do the cooking myself and prepare tea and meals to support my old mother. That is why I cannot practise.”

The Monkey King said, “From what you tell me, you’re a good man who honours his mother. Surely good will come to you in time. I only ask you to show me where that immortal lives, so I can go and visit him.” The woodcutter said, “Not far, not far. This is called the Mountain of the Spirit Tower and the Square Inch. In it is the Cave of the Slanting Moon and Three Stars, where an immortal lives, called the Patriarch Subhuti. The disciples who have gone out from that Patriarch are beyond counting. Even now thirty or forty people are practising under him. Follow that little path south for seven or eight li, and you’ll come to his home.” The Monkey King caught the woodcutter by the hand. “Brother, come along with me. If I gain anything from it, I’ll never forget your kindness in showing me the way.” The woodcutter said, “You fellow, you’ve no sense at all. After everything I’ve just told you, don’t you understand? If I went with you, wouldn’t I lose my day’s business? Who would support my old mother? I have wood to chop. Go on your own, go on.”

At this the Monkey King could only take his leave. He came out of the deep woods, found the path and crossed a hillside. After about seven or eight li, he did indeed see a cave dwelling ahead. He straightened up and looked. What a fine place! This is what he saw:

Mists spread their colours;sun and moon shimmer with light.A thousand ancient cypresses, ten thousand joints of tall bamboo.A thousand ancient cypresses, wet with rain, softly green halfway up the sky;ten thousand joints of tall bamboo, holding mist, fill a ravine with deep blue-green.Rare flowers spread brocade before the gate;jewelled grasses breathe fragrance beside the bridge.Rocky cliffs jut high, their green moss moist;sheer walls rise aloft, their emerald moss growing long.Often comes the cry of immortal cranes;often phoenixes are seen in flight. When immortal cranes cry, their voices shake the far marshes and reach the distant sky;when phoenixes take wing, their five-coloured feathers shine like bright clouds.Dark apes and white deer appear and disappear at will;golden lions and jade elephants roam or hide as they please.Look closely at this sacred blessed land:it truly surpasses paradise.

He saw, too, that the cave doors were tightly shut. All was quiet, without a trace of anyone. Turning his head, he noticed a stone tablet on the cliff, more than thirty Chinese feet high and over eight feet wide, with a line of ten large characters: “The Mountain of the Spirit Tower and the Square Inch, the Cave of the Slanting Moon and Three Stars.” The Handsome Monkey King was delighted. “People here really are honest. There really is such a mountain and such a cave!” He looked for a long time but did not dare knock. Instead he leaped onto the tip of a pine branch, picked pine nuts to eat and played there.

Before long he heard a creak. The cave doors opened, and a young immortal attendant came out, handsome and imposing, with a clear, uncommon look quite unlike an ordinary mortal’s. This is what he saw:

His topknots bound with two silken cords;his wide robe’s sleeves fill with the wind. His face and figure alike are set apart;both mind and outward form are empty.A long-lived guest beyond the world,a deathless boy within the mountain. Not one speck of dust defiles him;let the cycles of years tumble as they will.

The boy came out through the doorway and called loudly, “Who is making a disturbance here?” The Monkey King sprang down from the tree, came forward and bowed. “Immortal boy, I am a disciple seeking the Way and learning to become an immortal. I would never dare make a disturbance here.” The boy smiled. “You’re seeking the Way?” “Yes,” said the Monkey King. The boy said, “My Master had just risen from his couch and mounted the platform to expound the Way. Before he had begun to explain it, he told me to come out and open the doors. He said, ‘Someone seeking to practise has arrived outside. Go and receive him.’ That must be you?” The Monkey King laughed. “It’s me, it’s me.” “Follow me in,” said the boy.

The Monkey King straightened his clothes and composed himself, then followed the boy deep into the cave heaven.

As he went he saw tier upon tier of lofty chambers and jewelled towers, court after court of pearl palaces and shell gates, with more quiet rooms and secluded dwellings than words could tell.At last he came to the foot of a jade terrace. There the Patriarch Subhuti sat upright, with thirty young immortals standing in attendance below the terrace on either side.Truly:A golden immortal of great awakening, his bearing free of stain;Patriarch Subhuti, the wondrous form of the West.Neither born nor destroyed, he follows the threefold three;his vital breath and spirit whole, his compassion beyond measure.Empty and still, he naturally follows change;his true and original nature acts at will. His majestic body lives as long as heaven;through countless ages he has understood the mind, a great master of the Law.

The moment the Handsome Monkey King saw him, he threw himself down and bowed, knocking his head on the ground more times than anyone could count. All he said was, “Master, Master! Your disciple pays his respects with all his heart, with all his heart!” The Patriarch said, “Where are you from? First tell me plainly your native place and your name, then bow.” The Monkey King said, “Your disciple comes from the Water-Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain, in the kingdom of Aolai, in the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha.” The Patriarch shouted, “Throw him out! He’s a lying fraud. What fruit of the Way could he ever cultivate?” The Monkey King hurriedly kept knocking his head on the ground. “Your disciple speaks the honest truth. There is no lie or deceit.” The Patriarch said, “If you’re honest, why say the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha? Between that place and this lie two great seas and the Southern Continent of Jambudvipa. How could you have got here?” The Monkey King bowed his head. “Your disciple drifted across the seas and travelled through many lands. Only after more than ten years did I find this place.”

The Patriarch said, “If you came all that way by stages, very well. What is your surname?” The Monkey King said, “I have no temper. If people scold me, I don’t get upset; if they hit me, I don’t get angry. I just make a polite bow and leave it at that. I’ve never had a temper.” The Patriarch said, “I don’t mean temper. What was your parents’ surname?” The Monkey King said, “I have no parents either.” “Without parents,” said the Patriarch, “I suppose you grew on a tree?” The Monkey King said, “I didn’t grow on a tree, but I did grow inside a stone. All I remember is an immortal stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain. The year that stone split open, I was born.” The Patriarch was secretly pleased to hear this. “Then you were formed by heaven and earth themselves. Get up and walk about so I can see.” The Monkey King sprang to his feet and walked up and down twice with his loping gait. The Patriarch laughed. “Your body may be uncouth, but you look like a pine-nut-eating husun — a monkey. I’ll take a surname from your own body. I meant to call you Hu. Remove the animal radical from hu, 猢, and what remains is gu, 古, and yue, 月. Gu means old, and yue means yin. Old yin cannot bring forth life, so Sun would be better. Remove the animal radical from sun, 猻, and what remains is zi, 子, and xi, 系. Zi means a boy child, and xi means an infant’s smallness, which fits the basic idea of a newborn. Let your surname be Sun, 孫.” The Monkey King was filled with joy. He bowed toward the Patriarch and said, “Good! Good! Good! Only today have I learned my surname. I beg my Master’s compassion: now that I have a surname, please give me a personal name as well, so I can be called by it.” The Patriarch said, “In my school there are twelve characters used in turn to name each generation. You will be a young disciple of the tenth generation.” “What are those twelve characters?” asked the Monkey King. The Patriarch said, “Guang, Da, Zhi, Hui, Zhen, Ru, Xing, Hai, Ying, Wu, Yuan and Jue. In your turn it is the character Wu. I’ll give you the religious name Sun Wukong. Will that do?” The Monkey King laughed. “Good! Good! Good! From now on I’m called Sun Wukong!” Truly:

When primal chaos first opened, he had no surname;to break through stubborn emptiness, one must awaken to emptiness.
