Chapter Nineteen · Journey to the West

Wukong subdues Bajie at Cloud-Stack Cave;Xuanzang receives the Heart Sutra on Pagoda Mountain

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: by day on a quiet mountain, a smiling old hermit monk sits in a thatch nest in the fork of a great old pine and reaches a hand down toward a young crowned monk who kneels at the foot of the tree with palms together and eyes lowered, his staff on the ground, while a stag with a flower in its mouth, a monkey on a rock offering a fruit, a crane and a long-tailed phoenix on the branches look on before distant ridges.

Now, the monster’s fiery light sped ahead, with the Great Sage’s coloured clouds close behind. As they went, a high mountain suddenly came into view. The monster gathered his red light together, showed his true form, rushed into his cave and brought out a nine-toothed rake to fight. Pilgrim shouted, “You wretched monster! Where have you come from, you evil demon? How do you know Old Sun’s name? Whatever powers you have, confess them truthfully and I shall spare your life.” The monster said, “It seems you don’t know what I can do either. Come forward, plant your feet and listen while I tell you. I:

Was born a dull and foolish soul, forever craving ease and loving idleness.I never trained my nature or cultivated truth, but spent my days in muddled ignorance. Then, in an idle hour, I met a true immortal;we sat down and exchanged our greetings. He urged me to change my heart and not sink into mortal ways:harming living things heaps up boundless sin. When the day comes and your allotted life is done, the Eight Hardships and the Three Paths of Suffering leave you endless regret. His words changed my mind: I wished to cultivate the Way;my heart turned back, and I sought the wondrous formula.By good fortune I bowed on the spot and took him as my master;he showed me Heaven’s gates and earth’s portals. He taught me the nine-turn Great Reversion Elixir;day and night my work never ceased.Up to the Muddy Pellet Palace at the crown of my head, down to the Bubbling Spring point in the sole of my foot.I circulated kidney water into the Flowery Pool, replenishing the Elixir Field with gentle warmth. The infant and the lovely maiden paired as yin and yang;lead and mercury joined, dividing sun from moon. The dragon of Li and tiger of Kan were brought into accord;the spirit tortoise drank all the Golden Crow’s blood. The three flowers gathered at the crown, returning to the root;the five breaths came to their source, all clear and open.My work complete, my practice fulfilled, I rose to Heaven;heavenly immortals came in pairs to greet me.Bright coloured clouds sprang up beneath my feet;light of body, strong of limb, I went to the golden gates. The Jade Emperor gave a banquet for the immortals, assigning each a rank and place in line.By decree I became marshal of the River of Heaven, commander of its water troops, bearing the staff of authority. Then the Queen Mother of the West held her Peach Banquet, inviting all her guests to feast beside the Jade Pool.

I drank until my mind was clouded, reeling this way and that and making a drunken scene.

Swaggering, I burst into the Palace of Vast Cold;a lovely immortal maiden came to meet me.Her beauty stole my soul away;the old desires of mortal days were hard to kill.Forgetting high and low, all rank and honour,I seized Chang’e and demanded she sleep with me.Again and again she would not consent;she dodged this way and that, distressed at heart.Lust made me bold as Heaven; I roared like thunder, almost shaking Heaven’s gates to the ground. The Divine Inspector reported to the Jade Emperor;that day my luck ran out.The Palace of Vast Cold was surrounded tight;no way forward or back, no chance of escape. The gods laid hands on me,but with wine still in my heart I felt no fear. They took me to the Hall of Divine Mists before the Jade Emperor;tried under the law, I was sentenced to death. Thanks to the Venus Star, Li,who stepped out of line, bowed his head and spoke for me himself,The sentence was changed to two thousand heavy hammer blows, splitting flesh and skin, all but breaking my bones.Spared, but banished through Heaven’s gates,I sought a home at the foot of Blessing-Mound Mountain. For my sin I entered the wrong womb;my name in this world is Zhu Ganglie.”

When Pilgrim heard this, he said, “So you are Tianpeng, the water god, come down to earth! No wonder you know Old Sun’s name.” The monster snorted. “Hah! You Keeper of the Horses, you cheat who defied your superiors! When you made all that trouble, who knows how many of us you dragged into it? And now you come here to bully me. None of your insolence! Take a blow from my rake!” How could Pilgrim show mercy? He raised his cudgel and struck straight at the monster’s head. There on the mountainside the two of them fought in the dark. A fine battle:

Pilgrim’s golden pupils flash like lightning;the demon’s round eyes glitter like silver flowers. This one blows coloured mist from his mouth;that one breathes out crimson clouds.Crimson clouds make the dark places bright;coloured mist lights up the night. The gold-banded cudgel, the nine-toothed rake: two heroes worthy of praise. One is the Great Sage come to the mortal world;one is a marshal banished to the ends of the earth. That one lost his dignity and became a monster;this one escaped his ordeal and bowed to a monk. The rake strikes like a dragon stretching its claws;the cudgel meets it like a phoenix threading flowers. That one cries,“Ruin a man’s marriage, and you might as well kill his father!”This one cries,“You raped a young girl and deserve to be taken!”Idle words, a wild uproar; back and forth the cudgel parries the rake. They fight until dawn is near, and the demon’s two arms grow sore and numb.

From the second watch they had fought until the east grew white. The monster could no longer stand against him and fled in defeat, turning once more into a wild wind. He went straight back to his cave, shut the doors tight and would not show himself again. Outside the entrance Pilgrim saw a stone tablet bearing the three characters for Cloud-Stack Cave. Since the monster would not come out and broad daylight had arrived, he thought, “Master must be waiting. Let me go back and see him first. There will still be time to catch this monster afterwards.” He stepped onto a cloud, gave one little push and was already at Gao Village.

Meanwhile, Sanzang and the old gentlemen had talked of ancient times and the present all night without sleeping. He was just wondering why Pilgrim had not returned when Pilgrim suddenly landed in the courtyard. He put away his iron cudgel, straightened his clothes and went up into the hall. “Master, I am back!” The old gentlemen hurriedly bowed together. “You have taken so much trouble, so much trouble!” Sanzang asked, “Wukong, you have been gone all night. Where is the demon you caught?” Pilgrim said, “Master, that demon is no ordinary evil spirit from the mortal world, nor a wild beast from the mountains. He is Marshal Tianpeng come down to earth. He entered the wrong womb, so his face looks like a wild boar’s, but his spiritual intelligence is still there. He says he chose his surname from his looks and is called Zhu Ganglie. Old Sun drew his cudgel in the rear quarters and struck at him, and he turned into a wild wind and fled. Old Sun gave the wind a blow, and he turned into a stream of fiery light and went straight back to the cave on his own mountain. He brought out a nine-toothed rake and fought Old Sun all night. Just now, as day was breaking, he lost his nerve and ran, shutting the cave doors and refusing to come out. Old Sun meant to break the doors open and settle matters with him, but I feared Master would be waiting here in doubt and anxiety, so I came back first to bring you word.”

When he had finished, Old Gao came forward and knelt. “Elder, there is still nothing to be done! You may have driven him away, but what shall we do if he comes back once you have left? Please take the trouble to catch him for me and get rid of him, root and all, so there can be no later trouble. This old man will not neglect you: there shall be a rich reward. I will have our relations and friends witness a deed dividing my property and fields equally with you. Only pull up the weeds root and all, and do not let him ruin the good name of my house.” Pilgrim laughed. “You old fellow, you don’t know where to draw the line. The monster told me himself that, though he has a big appetite and has eaten some of your food, he has done you plenty of good work too. All the property you have gained these past few years came from his labour. He has not eaten your food for nothing, so why do you want to drive him out? By his account, he is a heavenly god come down to earth, keeping your household going and working for you, and he has never harmed your daughter. Such a son-in-law is a match for your family. He has hardly ruined its reputation or disgraced its conduct. You might well keep him.” Old Gao said, “Elder, it may not offend public morals, but it does sound bad. People are always saying, ‘The Gao family has taken a demon for a son-in-law.’ How can anyone bear that?” Sanzang said, “Wukong, since you have begun this business with him, finish it properly. Then you will have seen it through.” Pilgrim said, “I was only trying him out for amusement. This time I shall certainly bring him back for you to see. Do not worry.” Then he called, “Old Gao, look after my Master well. I am off!”

At the word he vanished without a trace, leapt to the mountain and reached the cave entrance. A flurry of blows from his iron cudgel smashed both doors to pieces. He shouted abuse: “You bran-gobbling oaf! Come out at once and fight Old Sun!” The monster was lying asleep inside, still panting for breath. Hearing the doors smashed and himself called a bran-gobbling oaf, he flew into an uncontrollable rage. He had to drag his rake along, rouse his spirits and rush out, cursing loudly. “You Keeper of the Horses! You really are a shameless rascal. What business is this of yours, that you smash my front doors? Go and read the law: breaking down the doors and forcing your way in is a lesser capital offence!” Pilgrim laughed. “You Idiot! Even if I have smashed your doors, I can still argue my case. But you have forcibly taken another man’s daughter, with no three matchmakers and six witnesses, no betrothal tea, red gifts or ceremonial wine. Yours is a true capital offence, punishable by beheading!” The monster said, “Enough idle talk! Watch Old Zhu’s rake!” Pilgrim stopped it with his cudgel. “Is this the rake you use as Old Gao’s hired hand, digging ground and planting vegetables? What is so fine about it that I should fear you?” The monster said, “You have it wrong. How could this rake be a mortal thing? Listen while I tell you:

This is forged of divine refined iron, ground and polished to a dazzling brightness.Lord Lao himself worked the tongs and hammer;Yinghuo himself fed in the charcoal. The Five Emperors of the Five Directions used all their skill;the Six Ding and Six Jia laboured long. They made nine teeth like pendants of jade, and cast twin rings with dangling golden leaves. Its shaft is adorned with the Six Luminaries and Five Planet Stars;its body follows the four seasons and eight festivals. Its length and height fix Heaven and earth;its left and right divide yin and yang, sun and moon. The Divine Generals of the Six Lines obey Heaven’s laws;the stars of the Eight Trigrams are arrayed by the Dipper.Called the Supreme Treasure Gold-Infused Rake,it was presented to the Jade Emperor to guard his crimson gates.Because I had become a Great Luo Immortal, because I had made myself a guest of everlasting life,He named me marshal, with the title Tianpeng, and bestowed this rake as my staff of imperial authority.Raised, it blazes with flames and radiant light;lowered, it brings fierce winds and auspicious snow. The divine generals of Heaven tremble at it;the King of the Underworld quakes in heart and soul.Where in the human world is such a weapon?Nowhere on earth is there iron like this.It changes with me to suit my wishes, twisting and turning at will with the spoken formula. For years I have carried it and never left it;for years it has kept me company without a day apart.I never put it down at my three daily meals;I never cast it aside when sleeping through the night.I wore it when I went to the Peach Banquet;I took it when I paid my court at the Emperor’s gates. All because I turned violent under cover of drink, all because I relied on my strength to run wild,Heaven banished me to the mortal dust, where I committed sins as I pleased. With an evil heart I ate people in my stone cave;with a loving heart I married at Gao Village.Under the sea this rake overturns the lairs of dragons and alligators;on the mountains it tears apart the dens of tigers and wolves.Never mind all the other weapons:in my hands this rake serves best. What trouble is it to win a contest?Success in battle goes without saying.

Why fear your copper head, your iron skull, your body all of steel? One blow of my rake will scatter your soul and drain your spirit.”

When Pilgrim heard this, he put away his iron cudgel. “Stop boasting, you Idiot! Old Sun will hold his head out here. Give it a stroke and see whether you can scatter my soul and drain my spirit.” The monster really did raise his rake and strike with all his might. With a thump, blazing sparks flew from its teeth, yet he had not disturbed so much as a scrap of scalp. Frightened until his hands went numb and his legs weak, he cried, “What a head! What a head!” Pilgrim said, “There is something else you don’t know. When Old Sun made havoc in the Heavenly Palace, stole the immortals’ elixir, stole the peaches and stole the Emperor’s wine, the Lesser Sage Erlang caught me and took me before the Palace of the Dipper and the Ox. The heavenly gods chopped Old Sun with axes, hammered him with hammers, hacked him with blades, stabbed him with swords, burned him with fire and struck him with thunder. They did not harm me in the least. Then Lord Lao the Most High took me away and put me into the Eight Trigrams Furnace, refining me with divine fire until I had fiery eyes and golden pupils, a copper head and iron arms. If you don’t believe me, give me a few more strokes and see whether they hurt!” The monster said, “You monkey! I remember that when you made havoc in the Heavenly Palace, your home was the Water-Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain, in the kingdom of Aolai on the Eastern Continent of Purvavideha. I have heard nothing of you for a long time. How have you come here now, bullying me at my own door? Can my father-in-law have gone there to fetch you?” Pilgrim said, “Your father-in-law did not fetch me. Old Sun has turned from evil to good, left the Daoist path and become a monk. I am guarding the Emperor’s brother of the Great Tang in the Eastern Land, a scripture master named Sanzang, on his journey to the Western Heaven to worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures. We passed through Gao Village and asked for lodging. Old Gao told us his troubles and asked me to rescue his daughter and catch you, you bran-gobbling oaf!”

As soon as the monster heard this, he dropped his rake and made a deep bow. “Where is the scripture-seeker? Please be so good as to introduce me.” Pilgrim said, “Why do you want to see him?” The monster said, “The Bodhisattva Guanshiyin urged me to do good, and I accepted her precepts. I have been keeping the fast and eating vegetarian food here. She told me to follow the scripture-seeker to the Western Heaven, worship the Buddha and seek the scriptures, redeeming my sins by service so that I might attain the true fruit. She made me wait for him all these years, but no word came. Since you have become his disciple, why didn’t you tell me about the scriptures sooner, instead of coming to my door and beating me with all your brute strength?” Pilgrim said, “Don’t try to trick me and soften my heart so you can escape. If you truly mean to guard the Tang Monk, with no falsehood at all, swear to Heaven, and only then will I take you to my Master.” The monster flopped to his knees and bowed towards the sky, knocking his head down again and again like a pestle pounding grain. “Amitabha Buddha! Homage to the Buddha! If I am not sincere and true, let me offend Heaven’s laws again and have my corpse hacked into ten thousand pieces!” Seeing him swear and make his vow, Pilgrim said, “If that is so, light a fire and burn down this home of yours. Only then will I take you.” The monster really did fetch reeds and thorn bushes, light a fire and burn Cloud-Stack Cave until it looked like a ruined tile kiln. “Now I have no ties left,” he told Pilgrim. “Take me along.” Pilgrim said, “Give me your rake to carry.” The monster handed it over. Pilgrim plucked out a hair, breathed immortal breath upon it and cried, “Change!” It became a three-stranded hemp rope. He went over and bound the monster’s hands behind his back. The monster really did put his hands behind him and let Pilgrim tie him as he pleased. Then Pilgrim seized him by the ear and pulled him along. “Hurry up, hurry up!” The monster said, “Gently! Your hand is heavy. You’re hurting the root of my ear!” Pilgrim said, “No gentleness for you. I can’t spare you that. As the saying goes, ‘Even a good pig needs a rough hand.’ Once we see my Master, if you are truly sincere, I shall let you go.” Half in cloud and half in mist, the two of them headed straight back to Gao Village. There is a poem to prove it:

Metal’s nature is hard and strong, able to conquer Wood;the Mind-Ape subdues the wooden dragon and brings him home.Metal yields and Wood obeys, both becoming one;Wood loves Metal’s kindness, and all is brought forth.Host and guest are parted by no barrier;three exchanges and three unions hold a hidden mystery.Nature and feeling rejoice together, constancy and primal power unite;together they shall attain the West, and these words will prove true.

In a moment they reached the village. Holding the rake and gripping the monster’s ear, Pilgrim said, “Look at the man sitting upright in the hall. Who is he? My Master.” When Old Gao and his relations and friends suddenly saw Pilgrim bring the monster in with his hands bound behind him and his ear held fast, they all came happily into the courtyard to meet them. “Elder, elder, this is indeed our son-in-law!” The monster went forward, knelt on both knees and bowed his head to Sanzang with his hands still behind him. “Master!” he cried. “Your disciple failed to welcome you. If I had known Master was staying in my father-in-law’s house, I would have come to pay my respects. Why should I have had to suffer all this trouble?” Sanzang said, “Wukong, how did you subdue him and bring him here to bow to me?” Only then did Pilgrim let go. He struck the monster with the rake’s handle and shouted, “You Idiot, tell him yourself!” The monster gave a full account of how the Bodhisattva had urged him to do good.

Sanzang was delighted. “Old Master Gao, let me have an incense table.” Old Gao hurried to bring one out. Sanzang washed his hands, burned incense and bowed towards the south. “How great is the Bodhisattva’s holy kindness!” The old gentlemen all added incense and bowed with him. When the bows were over, Sanzang took the high seat in the hall and told Wukong to untie the rope. Pilgrim merely shook himself and took it back into his body, and the bonds fell loose of their own accord. The monster bowed to Sanzang afresh and pledged to follow him west. He bowed to Pilgrim too, taking the one who had joined first as the elder, and so addressed Pilgrim as Senior Brother. Sanzang said, “Since you have joined me in seeking the fruit of goodness and wish to be my disciple, I will give you a religious name to call you by.” He said, “Master, the Bodhisattva has already laid her hand on my head, given me the precepts and named me Zhu Wuneng.” Sanzang smiled. “Good, good. Your senior brother is called Wukong and you are called Wuneng. You truly belong to the same lineage within my teaching.” Wuneng said, “Master, when I accepted the Bodhisattva’s precepts, I gave up the five pungent foods and three forbidden meats. I have kept the fast and eaten vegetarian food in my father-in-law’s house, never touching forbidden food. Now that I have met Master, let me break my fast.” Sanzang said, “No, no! Since you abstain from the five pungent foods and three forbidden meats, I will give you another name: Bajie.” The Idiot said happily, “I shall obey Master’s command.” Thus he was also called Zhu Bajie.

Seeing him turn from evil to good, Old Gao was happier still. He ordered his servants to prepare a banquet in thanks to the Tang Monk. Bajie came forward and caught hold of him. “Father, will you ask my humble wife to come out and pay her respects to her new father and elder uncle?” Pilgrim laughed. “Worthy younger brother, now that you have entered the Buddhist order and become a monk, say no more about ‘my humble wife’. There are householder Daoists in this world, but where will you find a householder monk? Let us settle our places at the table, eat a vegetarian meal and set out early for the Western Heaven.” Old Gao laid out the tables and asked Sanzang to take the highest seat. Pilgrim and Bajie sat on either side, with the relations below. Old Gao opened a jar of vegetarian wine, filled a cup, poured an offering to Heaven and earth, then presented wine to Sanzang. Sanzang said, “To tell you the truth, old master, this poor monk has been vegetarian since the womb. I have eaten no forbidden food from childhood.” Old Gao said, “Knowing the venerable Master’s pure diet, I have not dared serve any forbidden food. This wine is vegetarian too. One cup can do no harm.” Sanzang said, “I dare not take wine either. Wine is the first prohibition of our Buddhist order.” Wuneng grew alarmed. “Master, I have kept the vegetarian fast, but I have never given up wine.” Wukong said, “Old Sun’s capacity may be small, and I can’t manage a whole jar or so, but I have never given up wine either.” Sanzang said, “In that case, you two brothers may have some vegetarian wine. Only you must not get drunk and neglect our business.” So the two of them accepted the first cups. Everyone sat down again in their appointed places, and the vegetarian dishes were brought out. The splendid cups and plates, the abundance of good things, are more than words can tell.

When master and disciples had finished the feast, Old Gao brought out two hundred taels of loose gold and silver on a red lacquer tray, offering them to the three elders for their travelling expenses. He also offered three cotton outer robes. Sanzang said, “We are wandering monks. We beg food at villages and ask for vegetarian meals wherever we go. How could we accept gold, silver, money and cloth?” Pilgrim stepped forward, stretched out his hand and grabbed a handful. “Gao Cai! Yesterday you took the trouble to lead my Master here, and today we have gained a disciple. I have nothing to thank you with. Take these bits of gold and silver as your guide’s fee and buy yourself straw sandals. If you hear of any more demons, find me a few more chances like this, and there will be further thanks for you!” Gao Cai accepted them and bowed his head in gratitude. Old Gao said again, “Since you Masters will not accept gold and silver, I hope you will kindly take these coarse robes as a small token of my heart.” Sanzang said, “If we who have left home accept so much as a thread as a bribe, a thousand ages of cultivation will not undo it. Let us take only a few of the cakes and fruits left over from the table as provisions for the road. That will be enough.”

Bajie spoke up from beside them. “Master, Senior Brother, if you don’t want them, never mind. I have been this family’s son-in-law for years. Even a mere lodging allowance ought to come to three shi of grain! Father-in-law, my straight-cut robe was torn by Senior Brother last night. Give me a blue brocade cassock. My shoes have split too: give me a good new pair.” Old Gao dared not refuse. He bought a pair of new shoes and gave him an outer robe to replace his old clothes. Swaying from side to side, Bajie bowed to Old Gao. “Give my respects to Mother-in-law, my wife’s eldest and second sisters and their husbands, and all the aunts, uncles and relations. Today I am going off to be a monk. I have no time to say goodbye to them in person, so they must not take offence. Father-in-law, look after my wife well. If we should fail to fetch the scriptures, I can come back to lay life and carry on as your son-in-law, just as before.” Pilgrim shouted, “You oaf! Stop talking nonsense!” Bajie said, “It isn’t nonsense. If something goes wrong along the way, won’t I have lost my chance to be a monk and my chance to have a wife as well, with both prospects spoiled?”

Sanzang said, “Enough idle talk. Let us be on our way early.” They packed a load of luggage, which Bajie carried. They saddled the white horse, which Sanzang rode. With his iron cudgel on his shoulder, Pilgrim led the way. The three of them took leave of Old Gao and all his relations and friends and set off west. There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:

Mist and glowing clouds cover the earth; the trees stand tall and green. The Tang dynasty’s son of the Buddha toils and toils.Hungry, he eats a bowl of rice from a thousand homes;cold, he wears a patched robe sewn with a thousand stitches.Let not the mind’s horse roam loose within the breast;let not the wilful monkey of the heart howl. With feeling in harmony and nature settled, all conditions join;the moon is full upon the Golden Flower, and the coarse hair is shed.

The three travelled west in peace for about a month. After passing beyond the borders of the kingdom of Wusizang, they looked up suddenly and saw a high mountain. Sanzang held his whip still and reined in his horse. “Wukong, Wuneng, that mountain ahead is high. We must be very, very careful.” Bajie said, “Nothing to worry about. It is called Pagoda Mountain. The Chan Master of Crow’s Nest (Wuchao Chanshi) practises there. Old Zhu has met him before.” Sanzang asked, “What does he do?” Bajie said, “He has some attainment in the Way. He once urged me to cultivate with him, but I didn’t go.” As master and disciples talked, they soon reached the mountain. A fine mountain! This is what they saw:

On its southern slopes are green pines and blue-green junipers;on its northern slopes, green willows and red peach blossoms.Chattering loudly, the mountain birds talk in pairs;dancing lightly, immortal cranes fly together.Sweet fragrance rises fromflowers of a thousand colours;fresh green spreads throughgrasses of ten thousand wondrous kinds.Below in the ravine, green water surges;before the cliffs, auspicious clouds bloom.Truly this is a place of rare and quiet beauty, silent, with no one passing to and fro.

Looking ahead from his horse, the Master saw a nest of brushwood and straw in front of a fragrant juniper tree. On the left, deer carried flowers in their mouths; on the right, mountain monkeys offered fruit. In the treetop, blue luan birds and bright phoenixes sang together, and black cranes and golden pheasants gathered. Bajie pointed. “Isn’t that the Chan Master of Crow’s Nest?” Sanzang urged his horse on with the whip and rode straight to the foot of the tree.

Now, when the Chan Master saw the three coming, he left his nest at once and jumped down from the tree. Sanzang dismounted and bowed. The Chan Master helped him up with his hands. “Holy monk, please rise. I failed to welcome you, failed to welcome you.” Bajie said, “My respects, old Chan Master.” The Chan Master asked in surprise, “You are Zhu Ganglie of Blessing-Mound Mountain! How have you gained such great good fortune, to travel with this holy monk?” Bajie said, “The year before last the Bodhisattva Guanyin urged me to do good. I have pledged to follow him as his disciple.” The Chan Master was delighted. “Good, good, good!” Then he pointed to Pilgrim. “And who is this?” Pilgrim laughed. “How does this old Chan Master recognize him, yet not recognize me?” The Chan Master said, “Only because my acquaintance is limited.” Sanzang said, “He is my senior disciple, Sun Wukong.” The Chan Master smiled courteously. “Forgive my discourtesy, forgive my discourtesy.”

Sanzang bowed again. “May I ask where the Great Thunderclap Monastery of the Western Heaven lies?” The Chan Master said, “Far away, far away. And the road is full of tigers and leopards: hard travelling.” Sanzang respectfully pressed his question. “How far is the journey really?” The Chan Master said, “Though the road is long, the day must come when you arrive. It is the demonic miasmas that are hard to dispel. I have a scroll of the Heart Sutra: fifty-four phrases, two hundred and seventy characters in all. If you come to a place of demonic miasmas, recite this sutra and you will suffer no harm.” Sanzang prostrated himself on the ground and begged for it. The Chan Master then recited it aloud to teach him. The sutra says:

Mahaprajnaparamita Heart Sutra:The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, practising profound prajnaparamita, saw that the five aggregates were all empty and passed beyond all suffering and distress.Shariputra, form is no different from emptiness, and emptiness is no different from form;form is emptiness, and emptiness is form.Feeling, perception, mental formations and consciousnessare likewise.Shariputra, all phenomena bear this mark of emptiness: neither born nor destroyed, neither defiled nor pure, neither increasing nor decreasing. Thus in emptiness there is no form, no feeling, perception, mental formations or consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body or mind; no visible form, sound, scent, taste, touch or object of thought; no realm of the eye, through to no realm of mental consciousness; no ignorance and no ending of ignorance, through to no old age and deathand no ending of old age and death. No suffering, no origin of suffering, no cessation and no path;no wisdom and no attainment.Because there is nothing to attain, the bodhisattvarelies on prajnaparamita, and the heart is free of hindrance.Free of hindrance, there is no fear.Far beyond deluded, dreamlike thinking, one reaches final nirvana. The Buddhas of past, present and future rely on prajnaparamita and attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.Know, then, that prajnaparamita is the great divine mantra, the great illuminating mantra, the unsurpassed mantra, the unequalled mantra. It can remove all suffering; it is true and not false. Thus the prajnaparamita mantra is proclaimed. The mantra says:“Gate gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha!”

The scripture master of the Tang had deep spiritual roots: hearing the Heart Sutra once, he could remember it, and it has been handed down to this day. This is the comprehensive scripture for cultivating truth, the gateway to becoming a Buddha.

When he had taught the sutra, the Chan Master stepped onto a shining cloud to return to Crow’s Nest. But Sanzang caught hold of him again and begged insistently for exact directions on the journey west. The Chan Master smiled and said:

A thousand mountains, a thousand deep waters;many places of miasma and demons. If you meet Heaven-Reaching Cliff, put your heart at ease and have no fear. When you come to Ear-Grazing Crag, turn your feet sideways as you step.Take care in Black Pine Forest:demon foxes often block the road.Spirits fill the kingdoms and their cities;demon lords crowd the mountains.Tigers sit in the magistrate’s hall;grey wolves serve as chief clerks.Lions and elephants all call themselves kings;tigers and leopards all act as rulers.A wild pig carries the luggage;a water monster will be met ahead. An aged old stone monkey is therenursing anger.Ask that acquaintance of yours:he knows the road to the west.

When Pilgrim heard this, he gave a cold laugh. “For our journey, there is no need to ask him. Ask me.” Sanzang still did not understand his meaning. The Chan Master changed into golden light and went straight up to Crow’s Nest. The elder bowed upwards in thanks, but Pilgrim was furious. He raised his iron cudgel and thrust wildly at the tree. Ten thousand lotus flowers sprang up, and a thousand layers of auspicious mist protected it. Though Pilgrim had strength to churn the seas and overturn the rivers, he could not so much as tug a single strand of vine from Crow’s Nest. Seeing this, Sanzang caught hold of him. “Wukong, why are you poking at the nest of such a Bodhisattva?” Pilgrim said, “He gave the two of us a good round of abuse and then went away.” Sanzang said, “He was describing the route to the Western Heaven. When did he abuse you?” Pilgrim said, “What do you know? ‘A wild pig carries the luggage’ was an insult to Bajie; ‘an aged old stone monkey’ was an insult to Old Sun. How could you understand what he meant?” Bajie said, “Senior Brother, calm your anger. This Chan Master knows the past and future too. We need only see whether his line ‘a water monster will be met ahead’ comes true. Let him be.” Seeing the lotus flowers and auspicious mist around the nest, Pilgrim could only ask his Master to mount, descend the mountain and go on west. On that journey:

Peaceful ease would be scarce in the world of men;disasters and demons would abound in the mountains.
