Chapter Twenty-Six · Journey to the West

Sun Wukong seeks a cure on the Three Islands;Guanshiyin restores the tree with sweet spring water

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a walled orchard garden by day, a monkey-faced disciple, a pig-faced disciple and a bearded disciple strain to hold a great broad-leaved fruit tree upright over heaped earth, while a haloed Bodhisattva holding a slender vase sprinkles water on it from a willow sprig and a feather-cloaked Daoist lord stands by with his hands in his sleeves, a moon gate, garden rocks and a small pool behind them.

A poem says:

In dealing with the world, keep a blade above the heart;in tending yourself, remember an inch beside ‘and’.They say endurance is the way to keep life whole:think three times, and guard against anger and deceit. The highest adept contends with none, a teaching handed down from ancient days;the sage cherishes virtue and carries it into his own age.The strong and stubborn meet others stronger and more stubborn still;in the end it all comes to emptiness and wrong.

Now, the Great Immortal Zhenyuan kept his hand on Pilgrim and said, “I know your abilities, and I have heard of your great name. But this time you’ve gone against reason and your own conscience. Whatever tricks you have, you won’t escape my grasp. I’ll argue the matter all the way to the Western Heaven. Even before that Buddha of yours, you’ll still have to restore my ginseng tree. Don’t try your magic on me.” Pilgrim laughed. “What a petty-minded gentleman you are! If you want the tree alive again, what’s so difficult about that? Had you said so earlier, couldn’t we have saved ourselves a fight?” The great immortal said, “Would I have let you off so easily without a fight?” Pilgrim said, “Untie my Master, and I’ll give you back a living tree. How’s that?” The great immortal said, “If you have the power to bring the tree back to life, I’ll make the eight bows with you and swear to be your brother.” Pilgrim said, “Nothing to it. Let them go, and Old Sun guarantees you a living tree.”

Confident that he could not escape, the great immortal at once ordered Sanzang, Bajie and Sha Monk released. Sha Monk said, “Master, I wonder what trick our senior brother is up to.” Bajie said, “What trick? The trick of doing you a favour to your face. The tree’s dead. Can he really bring it back to life? He’s putting a fine gloss on things, using the search for a cure as an excuse to slip away by himself. Will he care what happens to you and me?” Sanzang said, “He would never dare abandon us. Let us ask where he means to find a cure.” He called, “Wukong, how did you trick the immortal Master into setting us free?” Pilgrim said, “Old Sun spoke the plain truth. How did I trick him?” Sanzang asked, “Where will you go to seek a remedy?” Pilgrim said, “The ancients said, ‘Remedies come from across the sea.’ I’ll go to the great Eastern Ocean, visit all the Three Islands and the Ten Isles, and ask the venerable immortals and holy elders for a way to bring the dead back to life. I guarantee I’ll cure his tree.” Sanzang asked, “How long before you return?” Pilgrim said, “Only three days.” Sanzang said, “Very well. I’ll take your word and give you three days. Return within that time, and all will be well. If you haven’t come back after three days, I’ll recite that you-know-what sutra.” Pilgrim said, “As you command, as you command.”
