Now, though the Great Sage had been driven away by the Tang Monk, he still thought of his master and sighed without end. Soon the great Eastern Ocean came into view. “I haven’t travelled this road for five hundred years!” he said. This is what he saw:
Misty waters stretch far and wide; mighty waves roll on and on.The misty waters reach the River of Heaven; the mighty waves connect with the veins of earth. The tide comes surging in; the water floods the winding bays. The surging tide roars like thunder through the three months of spring;the water flooding the bays is like a wild wind blowing through the long days of summer.Blessed elders riding dragons must frown whenever they pass;immortal boys astride cranes cross and recross in anxious care.No villages stand near the shore; few fishing boats lie upon the water.Waves roll up a thousand years of snow; the wind brings autumn in the sixth month.Wild fowl come and go at will; shorebirds rise and dip as they please. No angler meets the eye; only gulls sound in the ear.Fish swim happily beneath the sea; geese pass sorrowfully at the edge of heaven.

Pilgrim sprang into the air, leapt over the great Eastern Ocean and soon reached Flower-Fruit Mountain. He lowered his cloud and opened his eyes to look. All the mountain’s flowers and grasses were gone, its rosy mists vanished; peaks and crags had collapsed, forests and trees were scorched and withered. How, you may ask, had it come to this? After he made havoc in the Heavenly Palace and was taken up to the world above, Erlang, the Manifest Saint, had led the seven Plum Mountain brothers here and burned the mountain down. The Great Sage’s grief grew deeper still. There is an old-style poem to prove the ruin of the mountain and its scenery. The poem says:
Looking back upon the immortal mountain, tears fall from both eyes;facing it in desolation, his sorrow grows still deeper. Then he thought the mountain had escaped all harm;only today does he know the land has suffered.Hateful Erlang, who sought to wipe me out!Infuriating Lesser Sage, who bullied me!Did I do violence and dig up your ancestors’ tombs,or wreck the foundations of your family graves for no cause? All the rosy clouds and mists have been swept from the sky;all the winds and clouds have scattered from the land.No striped tiger roars on the eastern ridge;where on the western mountain does a white ape cry?Foxes and hares have left no trace in the northern stream;deer and beasts have vanished from the southern valley.Blue-green stones have burned into a thousand clods of earth;emerald sand has turned into a heap of mud.Tall pines outside the cave all lean and topple;green cypresses before the cliff have grown so few.Toon, fir, locust, juniper, chestnut and sandalwood are scorched;peach, apricot, plum, flowering plum, pear and jujube are gone. With thorn mulberries lost and mulberries gone, how can silkworms feed? With willows few and bamboo scarce, where can birds roost?Fine rocks upon the peaks have turned to dust;the springs have dried in the ravines, leaving only grass. The blackened earth before the cliff has no sweet herbs or orchids;vines and creepers climb the red mud by the path.Where have the birds of former days flown? To what mountains have the beasts of that time fled?Leopards shun and pythons loathe this place of ruin;cranes avoid and snakes turn back from this wreckage.Perhaps the evil thoughts of earlier dayshave brought these hardships upon us now.

While the Great Sage stood grieving, a rustle came from the sweet-grass slope, in a hollow tangled with creepers. Seven or eight little monkeys jumped out, rushed up together, surrounded him and knocked their heads to the ground. “Grandfather Great Sage!” they cried. “Have you come home today?” The Handsome Monkey King said, “Why aren’t you playing? Why are you all hiding out of sight? I’ve been here a long while without seeing a trace of you. Why is that?” At these words the monkeys all shed tears. “Since you were taken up to Heaven, Great Sage, the hunters have made our lives unbearable. How can we stand against their powerful crossbows and strong bows, their hawks and vicious hounds, their nets, snares, spears and hooks? Each of us treasures his life, so we dare not come out to play. We hide deep in the cave and keep far away in our nests. When hungry, we steal out to the slope to eat grass; when thirsty, we go down to the stream to drink clear spring water. Just now we heard your voice, Grandfather Great Sage, and came out to welcome you. We humbly beg you to protect us.” Hearing this, the Great Sage grew more sorrowful still. “How many of you are left on this mountain?” he asked. “Old and young together, only a thousand or so,” the monkeys said. The Great Sage asked, “I used to have forty-seven thousand demons here. Where have they all gone?” The monkeys said, “After you left, Grandfather, the Bodhisattva Erlang set this mountain on fire and burned more than half of them to death. We crouched in wells, crept into ravines and hid under the iron-plank bridge, and so escaped with our lives. But when the fire was out and the smoke had cleared, we emerged to find no flowers or fruit to sustain us. We could barely stay alive, and half of those left went elsewhere. Our half stayed in the mountain and endured the hardships. In the past two years, hunters have carried off half of us again.” Pilgrim asked, “What do they carry you off for?” The monkeys said, “Those hunters — how we hate them! They take those of us shot with arrows, struck with spears, poisoned or beaten to death, strip off our skins and remove our bones, boil us in sauce, steam us in vinegar, fry us in oil or stir-fry us with salt, then eat us with their rice. Others get caught in nets or snares and are taken away alive. They make them jump through hoops, perform tricks, turn somersaults and stand on their heads. They clang gongs and beat drums in the streets and put us through every kind of performance.”
