Now, the monster carried Bajie into the cave and said, “Brother, I’ve caught one!” The Eldest Demon said happily, “Bring him here and let me see.” The Second Demon said, “Here he is, isn’t he?” The Eldest Demon said, “Brother, you’ve caught the wrong one. This monk is no use.” Bajie seized on his words. “Great King, if the monk’s no use, let him go. It wouldn’t be decent to keep him.” The Second Demon said, “Brother, don’t let him go. No use he may be, but he’s one of the Tang Monk’s party. His name is Zhu Bajie. Soak him in the clear-water pool at the back until his hairy coat comes off. Then salt him and dry him in the sun. He’ll go with our wine on a cloudy day.” Bajie heard this and said, “What rotten luck! I’ve run into a demon who deals in cured meat.” The little demons carried Bajie away and threw him into the water. We leave him there for now.

Meanwhile, Sanzang sat by the slope, his ears burning, his eyes twitching, his whole body ill at ease. He called, “Wukong, why has Wuneng been so long on this mountain patrol without coming back?” Pilgrim said, “Master, you still don’t understand what’s in his mind.” Sanzang said, “What is in his mind?” Pilgrim said, “Master, if there were monsters on this mountain, he wouldn’t dare go half a step. He’d make a great show of bravado and run back to report to me. I suppose there are no monsters and the road is quiet, so he’s gone straight on.” Sanzang said, “If he really has gone on, where are we to meet him? These are wide, empty mountains, quite unlike streets with inns and markets.” Pilgrim said, “Don’t worry, Master. Please mount your horse. The Idiot is lazy and bound to be going slowly. Urge your horse along a little, and we’ll certainly catch him up and go on together.” The Tang Monk did mount his horse. Sha Monk took up the luggage, and Pilgrim led the way up the mountain.

Now, the Eldest Demon called to the Second Demon again. “Brother, since you’ve caught Bajie, the Tang Monk must be here too. Go and patrol the mountain again, and be sure you don’t miss him.” The Second Demon said, “I’m going, I’m going!” Look at him hastily mustering fifty little demons to patrol the mountain. As they went, he saw auspicious clouds drifting and blessed vapours circling above. “The Tang Monk is coming,” he said. The demons asked, “Where is the Tang Monk?” The Second Demon said, “Auspicious clouds shine above good people’s heads; black vapours rise to Heaven above the wicked. The Tang Monk is Elder Golden Cicada come down to mortal life, a good man who has cultivated himself through ten lifetimes. That is why those auspicious clouds drift above him.” None of the other monsters could see them. The Second Demon pointed. “Isn’t that him?” Sanzang, on his horse, gave a shiver. He pointed again, and Sanzang shivered again. Three times he pointed, and three times Sanzang shivered in succession. Uneasy in heart and spirit, Sanzang said, “Disciples, why am I shivering like this?” Sha Monk said, “If you’re shivering, perhaps your indigestion has flared up.” Pilgrim said, “Nonsense! Master is travelling through these deep mountains and steep ridges. He’s naturally anxious and easily startled. Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. Let Old Sun work his cudgel along the road to settle your nerves.”
