Chapter Thirty-Five · Journey to the West

The false path wields its might to oppress the true nature; The Mind-Ape wins treasures to subdue the evil demons

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: high in the sky above distant mountains, an aged white-bearded immortal sits on a carved seat upon a cloud, holding a gourd and a slender vase from which wisps of vapour curl up, with fine rays of light fanning out behind him; a sulking monkey in a tiger-skin kilt stands on a cloud at the left with his arms crossed, while two small boys beside the seat hold a sword, a palm-leaf fan and a coil of rope.

When the true nature shines complete, the Way opens of itself;with a turn and a leap, one escapes the net.The arts of transformation are not easily perfected;how can a life refined to deathlessness be like the common lot?Through many turns of fortune, clear and turbid shift;through aeons opened out, one roams at will, east or west.Free and at ease through countless billions of years, one spark of spirit light shines forever into emptiness.

This poem accords in secret with the wonders of the Great Sage Sun’s Way. Now that he had the demon’s true treasure tucked in his sleeve, he said happily, “That wretched demon has racked his brains to catch me: truly, he’s fishing for the moon in water. If Old Sun wants to catch you, it’ll be like playing with ice over a fire.” Keeping the gourd hidden, he slipped quietly outside, resumed his true form and shouted sternly, “Monsters, open the door!” A little demon nearby said, “And who are you, daring to shout here?” Pilgrim said, “Hurry in and tell your old wretched demon that Xingzhe Sun has come!”

The little demon hurried in to report. “Great King, someone called Xingzhe Sun has come to the door.” The Eldest Demon cried in alarm, “Worthy brother, this is bad! We’ve stirred up a whole swarm of them. The Shimmering Gold Rope has Sun Xingzhe tied up, the gourd has Zhe Xingsun bottled inside, and now where does this Xingzhe Sun come from? All his brothers must have come.” The Second Demon said, “Don’t worry, elder brother. This gourd of mine can hold a thousand people. I’ve only put one Zhe Xingsun inside it. Why be afraid of this Xingzhe Sun? Let me go out and have a look, and bottle him up as well.” The Eldest Demon said, “Be careful, brother.”

Look at the Second Demon, false gourd in hand, striding out as proudly and boldly as before! He shouted, “Where are you from, daring to make a noise here?” Pilgrim said, “You don’t recognize me:

My home is Flower-Fruit Mountain;my ancestral seat, the Water-Curtain Cave. For making havoc in the Heavenly Palace,I was long kept from the fray. Now, happily freed from that calamity,I’ve left the Daoist path to serve as a monk.Obeying the teaching, I go to the Thunderclap Monastery,to seek the scriptures and return to true awakening. But here I meet a wild, wretched demon, flaunting his divine powers.Give me back the monk of the Great Tang,to go west and pay homage to the holy Buddha.Let both sides end their fightingand each keep peace within its bounds.Don’t provoke Old Sun to furyand lose your wretched life!”

The demon said, “Come over here. I won’t fight you. But if I call your name once, do you dare answer?” Pilgrim laughed. “If you call me, I’ll answer. But if I call you, will you answer?” The demon said, “I call you because I have a precious gourd that can bottle people up. What have you got to call me with?” Pilgrim said, “I have a little gourd too.” The demon said, “If you have, bring it out and let me see.” Pilgrim took the gourd from his sleeve. “Look, you wretched demon!” He waved it once and hid it in his sleeve again, afraid the other would snatch it.
