Chapter Fifty-Four · Journey to the West

Dharma nature journeys west and meets the women’s kingdom; The Mind-Ape lays a plan to escape the women’s charms

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: before the gate tower of a post-station in a walled city, a young queen in an embroidered court robe and a crown of phoenix hairpins stands with her hands folded, smiling, beside her empty canopied carriage with two tall fans; opposite her, beside an incense table with a burner, the monk Tang Sanzang stands with his palms joined and his head bowed, while Sun Wukong whispers in his ear and Zhu Bajie behind them stares with his mouth open and a drop of drool at the corner of his snout.

Now, after Sanzang and his disciples took leave of the village household, they followed the road west. Before they had gone thirty or forty li, they reached the borders of Western Liang. From horseback the Tang Monk pointed ahead and said, “Wukong, the city is close now. Listen to the hubbub of voices in the streets — this must be the Women’s Kingdom of Western Liang. You must all take care, behave properly and keep a strict guard on yourselves. Never let your passions run loose and violate the precepts of our faith.” The three heard him and respectfully obeyed his stern instructions.

He had not finished speaking when they reached the entrance to a street in the eastern suburb. Everyone there wore a long skirt and a short jacket, with powdered face and oiled hair. Old and young alike, all were women. They were buying and selling along the two streets when they suddenly saw the four pilgrims coming. All at once they clapped and laughed, straightening themselves up and crying with delighted smiles, “Breeding stock is here! Breeding stock is here!” Sanzang was so alarmed that he reined in his horse and could scarcely move forward. In a moment the streets were packed, and nothing could be heard but laughter and chatter. Bajie shouted wildly, “I’m a castrated pig! I’m a castrated pig!” Pilgrim said, “Idiot, stop talking nonsense. Just bring out your old face.” Bajie really did shake his head twice, prick up his two palm-leaf-fan ears, twist his dangling lotus-seedpod lips and give a roar. The women were frightened into tumbling and scrambling away. There is a poem to prove it. A poem says:

The holy monk comes to Western Liang to worship the Buddha;within the kingdom all is yin, and yang is seldom seen.Farmers, scholars, artisans and merchants are all women;fishers, woodcutters, ploughers and herders all wear women’s dress.Lovely maidens fill the road and call for breeding stock;young wives crowd the streets to welcome handsome men.Had Wuneng not shown his hideous face, the women’s siege would have been misery hard to bear!

Now they were all terrified and dared not come forward. Each clasped her hands and bent at the waist, shaking her head and biting her fingers. Trembling, they crowded the roadsides and stared at the Tang Monk. The Great Sage Sun too made a hideous face to clear the way, while Sha Monk put on a fierce, tigerish look to keep them back. Bajie led the horse, jutting out his snout and wagging his ears.

They went on and saw neatly arranged houses and imposing shopfronts in the market streets. There were the usual sellers of salt and rice, wine shops and teahouses; towers with drums and horns served the bustling trade, and taverns and travellers’ lodgings hung with curtains and latticed windows. Master and disciples wound round the corners until they suddenly saw a woman official standing beside the street. She called loudly, “Envoys from afar, you must not enter the city gates without leave. Please go to the posthouse and enter your names in the register. This lowly official will take your names to the throne, and once your papers have been checked, you may go on.” Sanzang dismounted at these words and looked at the plaque above the office. It bore the three characters ‘Welcoming Yang Posthouse’. The elder said, “Wukong, what the village household told us was true. There really is a posthouse for welcoming yang.” Sha Monk laughed. “Second Brother, why don’t you go and look at yourself beside the Pregnancy-Revealing Spring? See whether you have a double reflection.” Bajie said, “Stop teasing me. Ever since I drank that cup of water from Abortion Spring, I’ve miscarried. What would I look in it for now?” Sanzang turned and instructed him, “Wuneng, mind your words, mind your words.” Then he went forward and exchanged bows with the woman official.
