Chapter Fifty-Nine · Journey to the West

Tang Sanzang’s road is blocked by Flaming Mountain;Pilgrim Sun first seeks to borrow the plantain-leaf fan

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: before a cave door among tall plantain trees, a woman in a patterned robe and flowered kerchief plants her feet wide and swings a great plantain-leaf fan with both hands, her sash and robe streaming in the wind; a pair of swords lies on the ground at her feet; at the upper right, caught in the gale, the monkey Sun Wukong tumbles through the air upside down, his limbs flung out and his iron staff still in one hand.

All the many kinds of nature are at root the same,an ocean taking in the boundless.A thousand thoughts, ten thousand cares end in delusion;every kind and every form blend into one.One day, when merit is complete and practice full, the perfect, radiant Dharma-nature rises high.Do not let distinctions send it straying east and west:keep it firmly locked within its cage.Gather it and place it in the elixir furnace;refine it till it glows as red as the Golden Crow.Bright and shining, lovely in its splendour, let it come and go at will upon a dragon.

Now, Sanzang obeyed the Bodhisattva’s teaching and took Pilgrim back. With Bajie and Sha Monk, they cut off their divided minds, caged the monkey and horse, and worked together with one heart, pressing on toward the Western Heaven. There is no end to telling how time flies like an arrow and the days and months pass like a shuttle. They had travelled through the blazing days of summer, and now encountered the frosty scenes of autumn. This is what they saw:

Thin clouds break apart, the west wind blows hard;cranes call on distant peaks, frost makes the woods brocade. The scene is bleak and chill;the mountains stretch far, the waters farther still.Travelling geese come from the northern frontier;dark swallows return to the southern fields. On the traveller’s road, loneliness brings fear;a patched monk’s robe soon lets in the cold.

As master and his three disciples went on, they gradually felt a heat that steamed their bodies. Sanzang reined in his horse. “It’s autumn now. Why is there heat instead?” Bajie said, “So you don’t know! On the western road there’s a kingdom of Sihali, the place where the sun sets, commonly called the End of Heaven. At the hours of Shen and You, the king sends men up onto the city wall to beat drums and blow horns, mingling their noise with the roar of the boiling sea. The sun is the true fire of supreme yang. When it drops into the West Sea, it’s like plunging fire into water: the sea boils with a roar. Without the drums and horns to confuse the ears, the sound would shake the city’s little children to death. This place is steaming hot, so we must have reached the place where the sun sets.” The Great Sage could not help laughing. “Idiot, stop talking nonsense! As for Sihali, we’re nowhere near it yet. With Master forever changing his mind — three in the morning and two at night — and delaying us like this, we could go from childhood to old age, turn young again and live three lifetimes of young and old, and still not get there.” “Brother!” Bajie said. “If, as you say, this isn’t where the sun sets, why is it so dreadfully hot?” Sha Monk said, “Perhaps the seasons are out of order, and autumn is following summer’s rule.” While the three were arguing, they saw a farmstead beside the road: houses roofed with red tiles, walls built of red bricks, doors painted with red oil paint and wooden couches lacquered red — everything red. Sanzang dismounted. “Wukong, go and ask at that house. Find out why it’s so hot.”
