Chapter Sixty-Three · Journey to the West

Two monks rout the monsters and make havoc in the Dragon Palace; The gathered sages drive out evil and recover the treasure

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a rocky mountain slope above a lake, Zhu Bajie, a rake across his back, bows with his hands joined before the young god Erlang, who holds a three-pointed blade and raises one hand to halt his party; a hound stands at his heel, behind him a brother holds a hawk, and two more carry a deer, a fox and a hare on a pole.

Now, the king of the Festival Offering Kingdom and all his high ministers saw the Great Sage Sun and Bajie rise on clouds and mist and float away carrying the two little demons. Every one of them bowed toward the sky. “The tales are true! Only today have we learned that such immortals and living Buddhas exist.” When the two had vanished into the distance, they turned and bowed their thanks to Sanzang and Sha Monk. “We are only flesh and blood, with a mortal’s eyes. We knew your worthy disciples had the strength to catch demon thieves, but how could We have known they were exalted immortals who ride on clouds and mist?” Sanzang said, “This poor monk has no magic power at all. All along the road I have relied on these three humble disciples.” Sha Monk said, “To tell Your Majesty the truth, my eldest brother is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, who has taken refuge in the faith. He once made havoc in the Heavenly Palace. With his gold-banded cudgel he faced a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers, and not one could match him. He caused such an uproar that Lord Lao the Most High was frightened and the Jade Emperor shaken. My second brother is Marshal Tianpeng, who has returned to the true path. He once commanded eighty thousand sailors on the River of Heaven. Only your disciple here has no magic power: I am the Curtain-Raising General, who has taken the precepts. We foolish brothers are no good at other things, but as for catching demons and binding monsters, seizing thieves and capturing fugitives, taming tigers and subduing dragons, kicking at Heaven and playing tricks with wells, or churning seas and overturning rivers, we know a little of all that. Riding on clouds and mist, summoning rain and calling up wind, moving the Dipper and shifting stars, carrying mountains and chasing the moon — those are merely things we do on the side. What is there to speak of?” At this the king’s respect grew greater still. He invited the Tang Monk to the seat of honour and called him “Venerable Buddha” at every turn, while Sha Monk and the others were all addressed as “Bodhisattva.” Joy filled the civil and military ranks, and the people of the whole kingdom bowed in worship. But let us leave them there.

Meanwhile, the Great Sage Sun and Bajie rode a wild wind, carrying the two little demons to Jade Wave Pool on Tumbled Rock Mountain, where they halted their cloud. Pilgrim breathed immortal breath onto his gold-banded cudgel and cried, “Change!” It became a monk’s knife. He cut the ears off the blackfish monster and the lower lip off the catfish spirit, flung the two demons into the water and shouted, “Hurry and tell that Dragon King of Myriad Saints that your Grandpa Sun, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, is here! Have him send out the very treasure he took from the pagoda of Golden Light Monastery in the Festival Offering Kingdom, and I’ll spare his whole family. If he so much as starts to say ‘No,’ I’ll churn this pool dry and put every one of them to death, young and old!”

Their lives spared, the two little demons fled in pain, dragging their chains as they plunged into the water. All the great turtles and alligators, tortoises and soft-shelled turtles, shrimp, crab and fish spirits crowded round them in alarm. “Why are you two dragging ropes and chains?” One covered his ears, shaking his head and swishing his tail; the other held his mouth, stamping his feet and beating his chest. Making a tremendous racket, they went straight up to the Dragon King’s palace. “Great King, disaster!” The Dragon King of Myriad Saints was drinking with the Nine-Headed Prince Consort. At the sight of the two he set down his cup and asked what disaster had befallen them. They reported, “While we were scouting last night, the Tang Monk and Pilgrim Sun caught us as they swept the pagoda and bound us with iron chains. This morning we were taken before the king. Then Pilgrim and Zhu Bajie grabbed us, cut the ears off one and the lip off the other, and threw us into the water. They sent us to demand the treasure from the top of the pagoda.” They told the whole story in detail. When the old dragon heard that this was Pilgrim Sun, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, he was frightened out of his body, his souls scattered to the skies. Trembling, he said to the prince consort, “My worthy son-in-law, anyone else would be easier to deal with. If it really is him, we’re in trouble.” The prince consort laughed. “Set your mind at rest, honoured father-in-law. Your foolish son-in-law learned a little martial skill as a boy, and I’ve met a few heroes within the four seas. Why should I fear him? Let me go out and fight three bouts with him. I guarantee the fellow will duck his head and surrender, not daring even to look up.”
