Now, Pilgrim Sun roused his divine might, grasped his iron cudgel and rose into the air on auspicious light. He shouted straight at the newcomer, “Where have you come from, evil demon? And where do you mean to run wild?” The monster answered in a harsh roar, “I am none other than the vanguard officer under our lord and Great King, the Rival of the Year God, of Xiezhi Cave on Qilin Mountain. By his command I have come to take two palace maids to wait upon the Queen of the Golden Sacred Palace. Who are you, to dare question me?” Pilgrim said, “I am Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. While escorting the Tang Monk from the Eastern Land to worship the Buddha in the Western Heaven, I passed through this kingdom and learned that your gang of evil demons was bullying its ruler. I have come to show my prowess, heal the realm and drive out evil. I had nowhere to look for you, and here you are, offering up your life!” The monster, too foolish to know better, thrust his long spear at Pilgrim, who raised his iron cudgel and met him head-on. A fine battle they fought in midair:
The cudgel is the Dragon Palace’s sea-stilling treasure;the spear is iron forged and forged again in the mortal world. How dare a mortal weapon vie with an immortal’s?A mere brush drains the spirit’s strength. The Great Sage is an immortal of Great Unity;the demon is the spawn of evil. How can a lurking ghost approach an upright man? When righteousness stands firm, evil perishes. One whips up wind and scatters earth to frighten a king;the other treads mist and rides clouds, hiding sun and moon. They cast off posturing and stake all on the fight;who without ability dares boast of being a hero? The Great Sage Equal to Heaven proves the stronger still:crash goes one blow, and the spear breaks first.
One stroke of Pilgrim’s iron cudgel broke the demon’s spear in two. In a panic for his life, he swung his wind about and fled westward in defeat.

Pilgrim did not pursue him for the moment. He lowered his cloud and came to the entrance of the underground chamber of the Demon-Avoiding Tower. “Master,” he called, “please come out with His Majesty. The monster has been driven off.” Only then did the Tang Monk help the king out of the chamber. The whole sky was clear and bright, without a trace of demonic vapour. The king went straight to the feast, took up the jug himself and filled a golden goblet to the brim. He offered it to Pilgrim. “Holy monk, accept this for now as Our thanks, Our thanks.” Pilgrim took the cup but had not yet answered when an official came to report from outside the court gate, “Fire has broken out at the western gate!” At this, Pilgrim flung the golden goblet, wine and all, into the air. Down came the goblet with a clang. The king, flustered, bowed low. “Holy monk, forgive Us, forgive Us. The fault is Ours. We ought to have invited you into the royal hall and bowed to thank you. Only because this wine was ready to hand did We offer it here. Yet the holy monk has thrown the cup away—surely you must be displeased?” Pilgrim laughed. “Nothing of the kind, nothing of the kind.” A little later another official came to report, “What a fine rain! Fire had just broken out at the western gate when a great shower put it out. Water is running through all the streets, and it all smells of wine.” Pilgrim laughed again. “Your Majesty saw me throw the cup away and thought I was displeased. I wasn’t. That demon fled westward. Since I didn’t chase him, he set a fire. With that cup of wine I put out the demon fire and saved the households inside and outside the western city wall. What other purpose could I have had?”

The king’s joy and respect grew greater still. He invited Sanzang and his three companions into the royal hall, and even wished to yield his throne and kingdom. Pilgrim laughed. “Your Majesty, that demon just now said he was the Rival of the Year God’s vanguard officer, here to take palace maids. Now that he has gone back defeated, he is sure to report to that fellow, who is sure to come and fight me. I fear that if he raises his troops and brings his whole force here, he will frighten and injure the people and alarm Your Majesty. I want to go and meet him, capture him in midair and bring back your sacred queen. But which way should I go? How far is his mountain cave from here?” The king said, “We once sent night scouts there to gather news. The journey there and back took more than fifty days. It lies to the south, some three thousand li away.” Pilgrim called, “Bajie, Sha Monk, stay here on guard. Old Sun will be back.” The king caught hold of him. “Holy monk, take your time for one day. Let Us have dry provisions and parched grain prepared, give you silver for the road and choose a swift horse. Then you may go.” Pilgrim laughed. “Your Majesty is talking about a journey on foot, climbing hills and crossing ridges. Old Sun tells you plainly: for a road of three thousand li, I can go there and back before wine poured into a cup grows cold.” The king said, “Holy monk, do not take offence at Our words, but your honoured face looks rather like an ape’s. How can you have such powers and travel so swiftly?” Pilgrim said:
“Though my body belongs to the race of apes, from youth I opened a way beyond life and death.I sought enlightened masters everywhere to teach the Way,cultivating at the mountain’s foot through dawn and dusk. With Heaven as the canopy and Earth as the furnace,I joined the crow and hare, the two ingredients.I gathered yin and yang, joined water and fire, and in an instant understood the Mysterious Pass.I relied on the Heavenly Stars to circulate the power, and on the Dipper’s handle to shift my steps.I cooled the furnace and fed the fire at the proper times, drawing out lead and adding mercury, tending their union.I brought the Five Elements together to give birth to creation, joined the Four Images and measured out their seasons. The two energies returned within the Yellow Way;the three families met upon the path of the golden elixir.I grasped the laws and brought them into all four limbs;my somersaults were as if helped by gods. One leap carries me over the Taihang Mountains;one tumble carries me past Cloud-Soaring Ferry. Why worry over thousands of steep ridges?I do not fear a hundred Yangtze Rivers. For nothing can block my transformations:one tumble takes me a hundred and eight thousand li!”
At these words the king was both astonished and delighted. Smiling, he offered Pilgrim a cup of royal wine with both hands. “Holy monk, you face a long and weary journey. Take this cup as a token of Our regard.” But the Great Sage’s whole mind was on subduing the demon. How could he care for wine? He only said, “Set it down for now. I’ll drink it when I come back.” Fine Pilgrim! He said he was off, gave a whistle and vanished without a sound. We shall leave the king and all his ministers marvelling.
