Chapter Seventy-Five · Journey to the West

The Mind-Ape drills through the body of yin and yang; The demon lord returns to the truth of the Great Way

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: in a stone hall, the lion-headed demon king in armour sits at a long table with the lid of a great vase in one hand, glaring into the vase that a monkey-faced imp tilts toward him, a few rays of light coming through a small hole in its base, while a wolf-faced imp and a rabbit-faced imp holding the torn seal look on in alarm; a tiny insect with long feelers perches on the plume of his helmet.

Now, the Great Sage Sun entered the cave mouth and looked to either side. This is what he saw:

Skulls heaped like ridges;bones thick as a forest.Human hair spread in sheets of felt;human skin and flesh rotted to mud and dust.Human sinews wound about the trees, dried hard and gleaming like silver.Truly, mountains of corpses and seas of blood;a stench too foul to bear.To the east, lesser demonscarved flesh from living captives; To the west, wicked monstersboiled and cooked fresh human meat.Without the Handsome Monkey King’s heroic courage,no ordinary mortal could have entered that gate.

Before long he passed through the second gate and looked about. Ah! This place was quite different from the outside: rare and secluded, lovely, broad and level. Wondrous herbs and immortal flowers grew to either side, tall pines and green bamboo before and behind. He went another seven or eight li before reaching the third gate. Keeping out of sight, he stole a look. Three old demons sat high above him, hideously fierce. The one in the middle looked like this:

Chisel fangs and saw teeth;a round head and a square face. His roar like thunder;his eyes like lightning. His upturned nose pointed to Heaven;his red brows streamed like flame.Wherever he walked, every beast’s heart quailed;Whenever he sat,all the demons trembled. This was the king of beasts, the Blue-Maned Lion Demon (Qingmao Shizi Guai).

The one to his left looked like this:

Phoenix eyes with golden pupils;yellow tusks and thick legs.A long trunk and silver hair;his head looked like a tail.A round forehead and furrowed brows;a great, hulking body. His soft voice like a graceful beauty’s;his jade face like an evil Ox-Head ghost’s.This was the Old Yellow-Tusked Elephant (Huangya Lao Xiang), who had hidden his tusks and cultivated himself for many years.

The one to his right looked like this:

Golden wings and a kun fish’s head;starry pupils and a leopard’s eyes.He rose in the north and made for the south, strong and fearless.Transformed, he soared aloft;the quail laughed, the dragons grieved. He beat his wings upon the whirlwind, and a hundred birds hid their heads;he stretched his sharp claws, and every fowl lost heart. This was the Garuda Eagle, whose cloud journey spanned ninety thousand li.On either side stood a hundred or so chiefs, great and small, each fully armed and armoured, helmets and mail in order, imposing in their might and seething with murderous force.

Pilgrim was delighted by what he saw and felt no fear at all. He strode straight through the gate, took off his clapper and bell and called up, “Great King!” The three old demons asked with smiles, “Little Wind-Borer, you’re back?” Pilgrim answered, “I’m back.” “You went to patrol the mountain. What did you learn of Pilgrim Sun’s whereabouts?” Pilgrim said, “Great King, I hardly dare speak of it before you.” The old demon asked, “Why don’t you dare?” Pilgrim said, “On your orders I was walking along, knocking my clapper and shaking my bell, when I suddenly looked up and saw a man squatting there, polishing a pole. He looked like a road-clearing god. If he stood up, he’d be a good hundred feet tall or more. He was polishing it on the rocky cliff by the stream, scooping up water and rubbing it, and with each rub he muttered that his pole hadn’t shown its powers since coming here. Once he had it polished bright, he would come and beat the Great King. That was how I knew he was Pilgrim Sun, and I came specially to report.”

At these words the old demon broke into a sweat all over. Trembling with fright, he said, “Brothers, I told you not to provoke the Tang Monk. His disciple has immense powers, and he’s already preparing, polishing his cudgel to beat us. What are we to do?” He ordered, “Little ones, call everyone outside into the cave, great and small. Shut the doors and let him go past.” One of the chiefs who knew what had happened reported, “Great King, all the lesser demons outside have scattered.” The old demon said, “Why have they all scattered? They must have heard things were going badly. Shut the doors at once! Shut the doors at once!” With much banging and crashing, the demons bolted every door, front and back, and shut them tight.
