Chapter Seventy-Eight · Journey to the West

A monk pities the children and dispatches unseen gods;In the golden hall, a demon is recognized amid talk of the Way and virtue

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: On a moonlit night high above the roofs and gate tower of a walled city, a monkey warrior with a staff on his shoulder stands on a cloud and points the way, while two armoured guardians, a white-bearded old earth-god with a crooked staff and a young attendant in flowing sashes walk softly across the clouds, each carrying a bamboo cage with a small boy inside.

One thought arises, stirring a hundred demons;cultivation is bitter work—what can be done with them?Wash yourself clean of dust and grime, but rein yourself in as well, and polish what is rough.Sweep away all entanglements and return to still extinction;clear out a thousand monsters without delay. Then you shall leap free of the cage and its snares;your practice fulfilled, ascend to the Great Luo Heaven.

Now, the Great Sage Sun had used every resource of his wit to invite the Buddha to subdue the monsters and free Sanzang and his disciples from their ordeal. They left Lion-Camel City and travelled west. Several more months passed, and winter was already upon them. This is what they saw:

On the ridge, jade-white plum buds are about to open;the water in the pools is slowly turning to ice.The red leaves have all drifted down;the green pines wear a fresher colour.Pale clouds fly, promising snow;withered grasses lie flat upon the hills.Cold light stretches far as the eye can see;a gloomy chill goes through the bones.

Master and disciples braved the cold, lodging in rain and dining on wind. As they went along, they saw another walled city. Sanzang asked, “Wukong, what place is that over there?” Pilgrim said, “We’ll know when we get closer. If it’s the seat of a king in the Western Regions, we must have our travel pass endorsed. If it’s a prefecture, district or county, we can go straight through.”

Before master and disciples had finished speaking, they reached the city gate. Sanzang dismounted, and all four went into the outer gate enclosure. They saw an old soldier asleep against a sunny wall, sheltered from the wind. Pilgrim went up, gave him a shake and called, “Officer!” The old soldier woke with a start and opened his eyes blearily. At the sight of Pilgrim he hurriedly knelt and knocked his head on the ground, crying, “Grandfather!” Pilgrim said, “Stop making such a fuss. I’m no terrible god. What are you calling me Grandfather for?” Still knocking his head, the old soldier said, “You’re Grandfather Thunder God!” Pilgrim said, “Nonsense! I’m a monk going from the Eastern Land to the Western Heaven to fetch the scriptures. We’ve just arrived, and I don’t know the name of the place. That’s all I’m asking you.” Hearing this, the old soldier recovered his wits. He yawned, scrambled up and stretched. “Elder, Elder, forgive your humble servant. This place was originally called the kingdom of Bhikshu. Now it’s been renamed the City of Little Boys.” Pilgrim said, “Is there a king here?” The old soldier said, “Yes, yes, yes.” Pilgrim turned to the Tang Monk. “Master, this was originally the kingdom of Bhikshu. Now they call it the City of Little Boys, but I don’t know why they changed the name.” Puzzled, the Tang Monk said, “If it’s called Bhikshu, why call it Little Boys?” Bajie said, “Perhaps the King of Bhikshu died, and the new king is a little boy. That’s why they call it the City of Little Boys.” The Tang Monk said, “That makes no sense, no sense at all. Let’s go in and ask again in the streets.” Sha Monk said, “Quite right. For one thing, that old soldier may not know; for another, Elder Brother frightened him into talking nonsense. Let’s go into the city and ask.”
