Chapter Eighty-Five · Journey to the West

The Mind-Ape envies the Wood Mother; The demon lord schemes to swallow the monk

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: on a rocky mountain road by day, a pig-headed pilgrim bends forward wailing and beating his chest with his rake thrown down, while a seated crowned monk with a ringed staff stares in astonishment, a monkey in a tiger-skin kilt stands behind him with folded arms grinning, and a bearded companion holding a white horse covers his mouth to hide his laughter, with an old pine and distant peaks behind.

Now, at the king’s morning audience, the civil and military officials all held up their memorials and addressed the throne. “Your Majesty, we beg you to pardon your servants’ breach of decorum.” The king said, “Your manners are as proper as ever. What breach of decorum?” The ministers said, “Your Majesty, we cannot say why, but overnight your servants have lost all their hair.” Holding this memorial about their missing hair, the king came down from his dragon throne and said to the ministers, “Indeed, We cannot say why either. Everyone in Our palace, great and small, has also lost all their hair overnight.” King and ministers alike shed streaming tears. “From now on, we shall never dare slaughter monks again!” The king returned to his throne, and the officials took their appointed places. “Those with business, step forward and report,” he said. “If there is none, roll up the curtain and dismiss the court.” From the military ranks stepped the Commander-in-Chief of the City Patrol, and from the civil ranks came the Eastern City Military Commissioner. They knocked their heads on the ground before the steps. “Your servants were commanded to patrol the city. Last night we recovered a chest of stolen goods and a white horse. Your humble servants dare not decide the matter ourselves and ask for Your Majesty’s ruling.” The king was delighted. “Bring the chest here with everything in it.”

The two officials returned at once to their offices, mustered their soldiers in good order and had the chest carried out. Inside it, Sanzang was frightened out of his wits. “Disciples, when we reach the king, how are we to explain ourselves?” Pilgrim laughed. “Don’t make a fuss. I’ve arranged everything. When the chest is opened, he’ll bow to us as his masters. Only Bajie mustn’t start arguing over who comes first.” Bajie said, “If we’re spared execution, that will be blessing enough. Would I dare argue?” Before they had finished speaking, the chest was carried to the court, through the Five-Phoenix Tower, and set below the red palace steps.

The two officials invited the king to open it and look, and he ordered it opened at once. No sooner was the lid lifted than Zhu Bajie, unable to contain himself, jumped out. The officials were so terrified they could not speak. Then they saw Pilgrim Sun help the Tang Monk out, while Sha Monk brought out the baggage. Seeing the Commander-in-Chief leading the horse, Bajie went up and barked, “That horse is mine! Hand him over!” The official tumbled backward in fright and fell to the ground. All four pilgrims stood before the steps. When the king saw that they were four monks, he hurried down from his dragon throne, summoned the queens and consorts of the three palaces, and came down from the Hall of Golden Chimes. Together with the ministers, they bowed and asked, “Elder, where have you come from?” Sanzang said, “We have been sent by the Emperor of the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to the Great Thunderclap Monastery in India, in the West, to pay homage to the living Buddha and fetch the true scriptures.” The king said, “Venerable Master, you have come far. Why were you resting inside this chest?” Sanzang said, “This poor monk knew that Your Majesty had vowed to kill monks, and dared not openly seek lodging in your honoured kingdom. We disguised ourselves as laymen and came by night to an inn in your noble land. Afraid that our true identities would be discovered, we rested in the chest. Unfortunately, robbers stole it away, and the Commander-in-Chief recovered it and had it carried here. Now that we have seen Your Majesty’s face, it is as the saying goes: the clouds part and the sun appears. We beg Your Majesty to pardon and release this poor monk. Your kindness would be as deep as the sea.” The king said, “Venerable Master, you are an eminent monk from the great celestial empire, and We failed to welcome you. Our long-standing vow to kill monks arose because monks once slandered Us. We vowed to Heaven to kill ten thousand monks and so fulfil Our pledge. But unexpectedly, last night We were brought to take refuge and made a monk Ourself. Now king, ministers, queens and consorts have all had their hair shaved off. We beg you, Venerable Master, not to withhold your wisdom, and wish to become your disciples.” At this Bajie laughed heartily. “If you want to become our disciples, what gifts have you brought for your first audience?” The king said, “If you masters consent, We will offer up the treasures of Our kingdom.” Pilgrim said, “Never mind treasures. We monks practise the Way. Just endorse our travel document and see us out of the city, and I guarantee that your realm will endure and blessings and long life will always be yours.” Hearing this, the king ordered the Court of Imperial Entertainments to prepare a great banquet. King and ministers bowed together and took refuge in the One. The travel document was endorsed at once, and they asked the master to give the kingdom a new name. Pilgrim said, “Your Majesty’s name ‘Dharma Kingdom’ is excellent, but the word ‘Destroying’ will never do. Now that I’ve passed through, you can rename it the ‘Dharma-Revering Kingdom’. I guarantee calm seas and clear rivers, a thousand generations of prosperity, winds in season and rains in measure, and peace in every quarter.” The king thanked him for this favour. He arrayed his full court procession and escorted the Tang Monk and his three disciples out of the city to travel west. King and ministers embraced goodness and returned to truth, but let us leave them there.
