Chapter Ninety-Eight · Journey to the West

The monkey matures and the horse is tamed; only then is the shell shed;Merit complete and practice fulfilled, they behold true suchness

A line drawing in the manner of a late-Qing lithographed edition: By day on the bank of a rough, rushing river, a young monk in a crown and patchwork robe holds a ringed staff and raises a hand in refusal, a bearded, wild-haired companion with a shoulder pole bites his finger in dismay beside him, a pig-faced man lies flat on the ground wailing with his rake beside him, a white horse stands with lowered head, and across a single thin log a monkey-faced man with a staff beckons from the far bank beneath a pine tree.

Now, Squire Kou, restored to life, once more assembled banners, drums and musicians, monks and Daoists, friends and relations, and saw the pilgrims off as before. We leave that aside.

Meanwhile, the Tang Monk and his three companions took the highway. This western land of the Buddha was indeed unlike other places. They saw jewel-like flowers and jade-like grasses, ancient cypresses and dark green pines. Wherever they passed, every family sought goodness and every household fed monks. At the foot of each mountain they met people cultivating the Way, and among the trees they found men chanting scriptures.

Master and disciples lodged by night and travelled at dawn. After another six or seven days, they suddenly saw a stretch of tall towers and lofty pavilions rising tier upon tier. Truly:

A hundred feet into the sky, soaring through the heavens, poised in space.Bow your head to watch the setting sun;stretch out your hand to pluck a flying star.Wide windows take in the universe;towering roofs meet screens of cloud.A yellow crane brings tidings to old autumn trees;a coloured luan bears a letter through the clear evening breeze. Here are sacred palaces and precious gates, halls of jade and courts of pearl. In halls of truth they speak of the Way;throughout the universe they spread the scriptures.Flowers grow lovely when spring comes;pines turn green after the rain.Purple lingzhi and immortal fruit flourish year by year;scarlet phoenixes wheel in stately flight, and all things answer their sacred presence.

Sanzang raised his whip and pointed into the distance. “Wukong, what a fine place!” Pilgrim said, “Master, in that false realm with those false images of the Buddha, you insisted on bowing down. Now we’ve reached the true realm with the true images of the Buddha, and you won’t even get off your horse. What do you mean by that?” Hearing this, Sanzang hurriedly swung himself down. They had already reached the entrance to the pavilions. A Daoist boy stood to one side of the monastery gate and called out, “Can these newcomers be the scripture-seekers from the Eastern Land?” The elder hastily straightened his clothes and looked up. This is what he saw:

Brocade robes upon his body,a jade-handled whisk waving in his hand.In brocade robes,he often feasts in jewelled halls beside the Jade Pool; With his jade-handled whisk,he sweeps the dust at elixir terraces and the Purple Palace. An immortal’s register hangs at his elbow;shoes clothe his feet.Light and free, a true Daoist adept, wonderfully fine and fair.Having perfected long life, he dwells in a blessed realm;having won eternal years, he has left the dust behind. The holy monk does not know this guest of Spirit Mountain:here comes the Great Immortal Golden Summit of old.

The Great Sage Sun recognized him and called, “Master, this is the Great Immortal Golden Summit of Jade Truth Abbey, at the foot of Spirit Mountain. He’s come to meet us.” Only then did Sanzang understand. He went forward and paid his respects. The Great Immortal smiled. “Holy monk, only this year have you arrived! The Bodhisattva Guanyin has fooled me. Ten years ago she took the Buddha’s golden decree and went to the Eastern Land to find a scripture-seeker. She said you would reach me in two or three years. I waited year after year without the faintest news. Who would have thought we should meet only this year?” Sanzang joined his palms. “You have gone to such trouble for us, Great Immortal. My thanks, my thanks.” The four pilgrims led the horse and carried the luggage into the abbey, where each in turn exchanged greetings with the Great Immortal. He ordered tea and a vegetarian meal, then told a young attendant to heat fragrant water for the holy monk to bathe, so that he might ascend to the Buddha’s land. Truly:

Merit complete and practice fulfilled, it is time to bathe;the true nature, trained and tamed, accords with Heaven’s truth.A thousand hardships and ten thousand sufferings cease at last;nine precepts and three refuges begin renewal. With demons vanquished, they ascend to the Buddha’s land;with calamities ended, they meet the Buddhist holy ones.Washed of dust and cleansed of grime, no stain remains;returned to root and source, the body cannot perish.Master and disciples bathed, and before they knew it evening was drawing near; They rested for the night at Jade Truth Abbey.
