Ji Gong matches magic with the Divine Child; The arhat brings Shen Miaoliang to heel

Now, the Divine Child, Chu Daoyuan, was chasing after the monk when more than twenty men came out of the village, seized the old Daoist and set about beating him. The old Daoist had no idea why.

A word of explanation: Ji Gong had run into this village, where there was a teahouse with a good many people drinking tea. The monk came in and said, “Good people, quick, save me!” “What’s the matter?” everyone said. “There’s an old Daoist outside the village,” said the monk. “He’s out there with a sword, about to lay a fog over this village. He says he’ll make everyone in the village fall sick, and nobody but him can cure them. That way he can squeeze three thousand taels of silver out of you. I tried to talk him out of it and he got angry. He says I’ve spoiled his game, and he’s after me with his sword to kill me.” When everyone heard this they said, “This is beyond bearing! Let’s catch the old Daoist and bury him alive.” With that the crowd ran out of the village, and sure enough there was an old Daoist with a sword in his hand and his eyes staring straight ahead. Up came the crowd, seized him and set about beating him. “Good people, why are you beating me?” Chu Daoyuan kept shouting. “You came to lay a fog and harm the people of our village,” they said. “Why wouldn’t we beat you?” “Who said so?” said the old Daoist. “The monk said so,” they said. “Very well,” said the old Daoist. “The monk and I are enemies. Good people, don’t listen to him. I’m from Bixiu Temple on Tieniu Ridge. I’m called the Divine Child, Chu Daoyuan, and I’m looking for the monk right now. Where is he? Let’s have it out face to face.”

The whole crowd went back to the teahouse together, and the monk was gone. “Where’s the monk got to?” they said. One of them said, “The monk’s gone next door to see to Second Master Tian’s madness.” When the old Daoist heard this, he longed to catch the monk and slice him into a thousand pieces; nothing less would let out the rage in his breast. He hurried to the gate of the Tian house and shouted, “Crazy Ji, come out here! This man of the mountains will fight you to the death!” Now, the monk had in fact been sitting in the teahouse. When the crowd went off to beat the old Daoist, the monk said, “This monk makes his living curing the sick. Whatever the madness, curing it is my speciality.” A man came over from one side and said, “Master, our Second Master Tian has been mad a good long while. He beats anyone he sees, and now he’s locked in an empty room at the back. Can you cure him?” “One go of my cure and he’ll be well,” said the monk. “In that case,” said the man, “come with me.” He brought the monk into the compound. “Where’s the madman?” said the monk. “Locked up in the back courtyard,” said the man. The monk had him fetch the key, went round to the back and opened the lock. The madman ran out and made for the gate, where the old Daoist was calling for the monk. Out came the madman, grabbed the old Daoist and went for him. He pinned him down and kicked and beat him, and when he had finished beating him he pissed a whole stream down the old Daoist’s neck. It was all the crowd could do to drag the madman back inside. “I have a piece of medicine here,” said the monk. “Give it to him later and he’ll be well.” The monk took a little something and came out of the compound, and there was the crowd trying to calm the old Daoist down: “Go on home. He’s a madman. What can anyone do about it?”
