話說老仙翁一念咒，一陣狂風大作。和尚一看，老道會分身法，又變出一個老仙翁來，也是跟他一樣，手裡拿著寶劍，這個拿寶劍就砍，那個就扎。和尚說：「好的，老道會分窠，又下了一個。」說著話，兩個老道各掐訣念咒，兩個老道化出四個來。四個老道還是不行，把和尚圍上，和尚嗞溜嗞溜跑得真快，四個老道還是砍不著和尚。四個老道一念咒，變八個，八個化十六個，十六個變三十二個，三十二個化六十四個，老道一院子都滿了。和尚嗞溜嗞溜亂跑，和尚說：「我可真急了。」立刻和尚抓了一把土，口念「唵嘛呢叭咪吽！唵敕令赫！」一陣狂風，變出無數的老仙姑，這個老仙姑抱著那個老道不肯放，那個老仙姑抱了那個老仙翁叫乖乖。老道一瞧，事情不好，當時把舌尖咬破，一口血噴出來，把無數的老道收回去，仙姑也化了。

Now, the Old Immortal Elder chanted a spell, and a mad wind sprang up. The monk looked: the old Daoist knew the art of splitting himself, and had turned out a second Old Immortal Elder, just like himself and sword in hand as well. One hacked with his sword, the other stabbed. “Fine,” said the monk. “The old Daoist knows how to drop a litter. He’s had another one.” As he spoke, the two old Daoists each pinched a spell sign and chanted, and the two old Daoists turned into four. Four old Daoists still could not manage it. They surrounded the monk, but the monk went zipping and skittering about so fast that the four old Daoists still could not land a blow on him. The four old Daoists chanted a spell and became eight; eight turned into sixteen, sixteen became thirty-two, thirty-two turned into sixty-four, until the whole courtyard was packed with old Daoists. The monk went zipping and skittering every which way. “Now I really am getting desperate,” said the monk. At once he grabbed a handful of earth and chanted, “Om mani padme hum! Om! By command — he!” A mad wind blew, and out came countless old Immortal Ladies. This old Immortal Lady hugged that old Daoist and would not let go; that old Immortal Lady wrapped her arms round that Old Immortal Elder and called him her little darling. The old Daoist saw things were going badly. At once he bit the tip of his tongue, spat out a mouthful of blood, and drew all his countless old Daoists back into himself; the Immortal Ladies melted away too.
玉面老妖狐氣的要與和尚拚命，臊得滿面紅赤。老仙翁說：「仙姑不用著急，待我今天要顛僧的命。」立刻由那屋裡，把乾坤奧妙大葫蘆拿出來。老妖狐知道這葫蘆的利害，無論什麼妖精收到裡面，一時三刻化為膿血，老妖狐他雖有八千年道行，他也當不了，急忙一跺腳，架起妖風，竟自逃走。老仙翁把葫蘆在手中一擎，說：「顛僧，你可認識我這葫蘆？」和尚說：「我怎么不認識？這必是酒鋪里的幌子，給你偷來的。我常在酒鋪里喝酒，聽說你要賒酒，酒鋪不賒給你，你一恨，把人家幌子偷來。」老仙翁說：「你胡說！你可知道我這葫蘆的來歷？」和尚說：「我不是說酒鋪的幌子嗎？」老仙翁道：「告訴你：
‘蔓是甲年栽，花是甲月開。甲日結葫蘆，還得甲時摘。裡面按五行，外面按三才。吸得精靈物，霎時化灰塵。’
我這葫蘆經過四個甲子。無論什麼精靈裝在裡面，一時三刻化為膿血。你別看我葫蘆小，能裝三山五嶽，萬國九洲。」和尚說：「還有些什麼個奧妙呢？」老仙翁說：「我要把你裝在裡頭，六個時辰，就把你化為膿血。」和尚說：「咱們兩個人，也沒有這么大冤仇呀，你何必要我的命呢？你把我要裝到裡面，我要難受，我說‘道爺你饒了我罷。」我一嚷，你可把我放出來。」老仙翁說：「可以，只要你知我的利害，服了我，我就饒你。」和尚說：「隨你裝罷。」老仙翁立刻把葫蘆蓋一拔，口中念念有詞，只見出來一道霞光，金光繞繚，瑞氣千條，霞光一片，看著把和尚一裹，展眼之際，就見和尚給霞光繞的瞧不真了。老仙翁把霞光一收，葫蘆蓋一蓋，老仙翁叫道：「顛僧。」

The Jade-Faced Old Fox Demon was so furious she wanted to fight the monk to the death, and so mortified that her whole face burned scarlet. “Immortal Lady, don’t fret,” said the Old Immortal Elder. “Today I mean to have the crazy monk’s life.” At once he fetched the Great Gourd of Cosmic Mysteries out of the room. The old fox demon knew how deadly the gourd was: whatever demon was taken into it turned to pus and blood within a couple of hours, and though she had eight thousand years of cultivation, even she could not withstand it. In haste she stamped her foot, raised a demon wind and fled. The Old Immortal Elder held up the gourd in his hand. “Crazy monk,” he said, “do you know this gourd of mine?” “How could I not know it?” said the monk. “It must be a wine shop’s sign that you stole. I drink in wine shops all the time, and I heard you wanted wine on credit, and the wine shop wouldn’t give you any, so out of spite you stole their sign.” “Nonsense!” said the Old Immortal Elder. “Do you know where this gourd of mine comes from?” “Didn’t I tell you? A wine shop’s sign,” said the monk. The Old Immortal Elder said, “I’ll tell you:
‘Its vine was sown in a jia year,its flower bloomed in a jia month;on a jia day the gourd was set,and it had to be picked in a jia hour.Within, it is ordered by the Five Elements;without, by the Three Powers.Whatever sprite it draws insideis turned to dust in an instant.’
This gourd of mine has been through four sixty-year cycles. Whatever sprite is put inside it turns to pus and blood within a couple of hours. Don’t go by how small my gourd is: it can hold the Three Mountains and the Five Peaks, the ten thousand kingdoms and the Nine Provinces.” “And what other mysteries has it got?” said the monk. “If I put you inside,” said the Old Immortal Elder, “in twelve hours it will turn you to pus and blood.” “There’s no great feud between the two of us,” said the monk. “Why should you want my life? If you put me in there and I can’t bear it, I’ll say, ‘Daoist sir, spare me,’ and when I shout, you let me out.” “Very well,” said the Old Immortal Elder. “So long as you know what I can do and submit to me, I’ll spare you.” “Put me in, then, as you please,” said the monk. At once the Old Immortal Elder pulled the stopper from the gourd and muttered words under his breath. Out came a beam of rosy light, golden light winding about it, a thousand streamers of auspicious air, a whole sheet of rosy glow. It wrapped itself round the monk, and in the blink of an eye the monk was so wound about with the light that he could no longer be clearly seen. The Old Immortal Elder drew the light back in, stoppered the gourd and called out, “Crazy monk.”
就聽和尚在葫蘆里答應「哎」。老仙翁說：「顛僧，你覺著怎么樣。」就聽葫蘆里說：「這倒很好，我有個地方住著倒不錯。」老仙翁說：「顛僧，你不央求我，少時就把你化了。」這個時候，夜行鬼小崑崙郭順、孫道全、雷鳴、陳亮連小悟禪，都給老仙翁跪下了，眾人說：「祖師爺饒命，我師父有點瘋瘋癲癲，你不要跟他一般見識。」郭順說：「濟公也是我的師父，前是我師父在曲州府五里碑也救過我的性命，求師父看在弟子面上，把濟公救出來罷。」老仙翁說：「我山人原本和他往日無冤，近日無讎，皆因他興三寶滅三清，欺負我們三清教的門人太過，我也要給三清教轉轉臉面。既是救過我徒弟，你等起來，我山人不要他的命就是了。」
就听和尚在葫芦里答应「哎」。老仙翁说：「颠僧，你觉着怎么样。」就听葫芦里说：「这倒很好，我有个地方住着倒不错。」老仙翁说：「颠僧，你不央求我，少时就把你化了。」这个时候，夜行鬼小昆仑郭顺、孙道全、雷鸣、陈亮连小悟禅，都给老仙翁跪下了，众人说：「祖师爷饶命，我师父有点疯疯癫癫，你不要跟他一般见识。」郭顺说：「济公也是我的师父，前是我师父在曲州府五里碑也救过我的性命，求师父看在弟子面上，把济公救出来罢。」老仙翁说：「我山人原本和他往日无冤，近日无雠，皆因他兴三宝灭三清，欺负我们三清教的门人太过，我也要给三清教转转脸面。既是救过我徒弟，你等起来，我山人不要他的命就是了。」
From inside the gourd came the monk’s answer: “Hey.” “Crazy monk,” said the Old Immortal Elder, “how do you feel?” From inside the gourd came the words, “It’s quite nice. Having a place to live isn’t bad at all.” “Crazy monk,” said the Old Immortal Elder, “if you don’t beg me for mercy, in a little while you’ll be melted down.” At this point the Night-Walking Ghost, Little Kunlun Guo Shun, together with Sun Daoquan, Lei Ming, Chen Liang and Little Wuchan, all knelt before the Old Immortal Elder. “Patriarch, spare his life!” they said. “Our master is a bit crazy. Don’t stoop to his level.” “Ji Gong is my master too,” said Guo Shun. “Once before, at Wulibei in Quzhou Prefecture, my master saved my life. Master, I beg you, for your disciple’s sake, let Ji Gong out.” “This mountain hermit had no quarrel with him in days gone by and no grudge against him lately,” said the Old Immortal Elder. “It is all because he raises up the Three Jewels and tears down the Three Pure Ones, and has bullied the followers of our Sanqing Sect beyond all bounds; I too must win back some face for the Sanqing Sect. But since he once saved my disciple, get up, all of you. This mountain hermit will not take his life, and there’s an end of it.”
