Now, when Zheng Xiong met Ji Gong, Ji Gong said he was going to Wanzhen Tower for a drink. “I’m on my way to Wanzhen Tower myself,” said Zheng Xiong. “Good,” said the monk. “I’m not going to Wanzhen Tower to drink,” said Zheng Xiong. “I’m going to settle a score for a friend. I’m after Sun Tailai. If you want a drink, Master, go and have it somewhere else.” “I’m after Sun Tailai too,” said the monk. “Well, if you want to come, Master, I won’t stop you,” said Zheng Xiong. “Let’s go together.” “Wait a moment first,” said the monk. He went into the tofu shop and said, “Zhou Deshan, don’t you go dying just yet, and don’t write any petition to the underworld either. Zhou Mao, don’t go off to Qiantang County to file your complaint yet. This monk is going to Wanzhen Tower to find Liao Tinggui for you. Before long I’ll see you come out of this all right. I’ll make sure Liao Tinggui apologizes to you, and whatever of yours they smashed, I guarantee you’ll be paid back item for item. Wait two or three double-hours for this monk to bring you word. If nothing comes of it, it won’t be too late to die then.” Zhou Deshan was taken aback. “What should I call you, Reverend Master?” “I am Crazy Ji of Lingyin Temple,” said the monk. Zhou Deshan had heard tell of him; Ji Gong’s name stood high in Lin’an, and there was no one who did not know it. “Since the holy monk is so merciful,” said Zhou Deshan, “I’ll wait to hear from you, sir.” “Right,” said the monk. Only then did he go with Zheng Xiong straight in through the Qiantang Gate. They had not gone far when there on the north side of the street was Wanzhen Tower, the wine and food house. Zheng Xiong went first and flung aside the door curtain. Inside the door, the counting room was on the east and the stoves on the west. Zheng Xiong slapped the counter. “Hey! Eldest Grand Master Zheng is here today to give you some custom, you little punk!” Sun Tailai, the Pockmarked Tiger, was in the counting room just then, scolding Liao Tinggui: he should never have leaned on the shop’s name to wreck other people’s tofu shop. If they drove somebody to his death, what then? Besides, Lin’an was a place where dragons lay hidden and tigers crouched, and someone might well step in to right a wrong he saw on the road. Even he himself had pulled in his horns these days and did not dare stir up trouble for nothing. “Don’t go blaming me!” said Liao Tinggui. “It was Zhou Mao who went at me with an axe first. Look how badly he cut my arm!” They were still talking when a shout came from outside: “Sun Tailai! Eldest Grand Master Zheng is here today to give you some custom, you little punk!” Sun Tailai peered out through the gap at the edge of the curtain. It was Zheng Xiong, the Iron-Faced Heavenly King.
Sun Tailai knew that Zheng Xiong was a man in Lin’an who could shake heaven and earth, a name to reckon with. Zheng Xiong knew everyone; from dukes and marquises down to common folk, there was no one who did not know him. And Zheng Xiong truly did love making friends. He threw gold about like dirt, gave freely for a just cause, was generous and open-handed, and helped people out of trouble and want. No matter who it was, if they came to Zheng Xiong for help, ten strings of cash or eight, thirty or fifty, he never thought twice. So he was known far and near in Lin’an, with a far bigger name than Sun Tailai. Zheng Xiong was an upright man; Sun Tailai was a bully whom no one dared cross to his face and everyone cursed behind his back, while Zheng Xiong’s character and standing were looked up to by all. Today, when Sun Tailai saw it was Zheng Xiong, he gave a start. “Look, Liao Tinggui, trouble’s here. Zheng Xiong is somebody around here. This is an ill wind and a stray fire out of nowhere. If he plants himself in my doorway and curses me, and I don’t go out, I may as well quit the game. Ten years ago, if he’d come and cursed me, I could have left him alone and it wouldn’t have mattered; nobody in Lin’an had heard of Sun Tailai then. But now I’d be finished. I could never throw my name around again. If I tried, people would say, ‘Sun Tailai, don’t you bully us. You don’t dare cross Zheng Xiong, do you?’ One more word like that and I’d die of shame. There’s no way round it. I’ll have to have it out with Zheng Xiong. Liao Tinggui, you go out and calm him down with sweet talk. Don’t let him leave. I’ll go and get some men. I’m no match for him on my own. I’ll bring men to come and beat him to a pulp. At worst it’s a lawsuit.” Liao Tinggui nodded, turned and came out. Seeing Zheng Xiong huffing with rage, he said, “Master Zheng, you’re here? Why so angry? Who has offended you, sir?” “I’ve come for the Pockmarked Tiger, Sun Tailai,” said Zheng Xiong. “Tell him to come out and face me.” “Let your anger cool a little first, Master Zheng,” said Liao Tinggui. “Our boss isn’t in. Go upstairs first and have a cup of wine. Whatever it is can be talked over. Waiter, come here! Take Master Zheng upstairs, and order him two pots of wine and a few dishes. This way, Master Zheng, please!” A waiter came over. “Please take a seat upstairs, Master Zheng.” Zheng Xiong thought, “Every wrong has its doer, every debt its debtor. It’s Sun Tailai I’m after. Since he isn’t in, it wouldn’t be right to make a scene with anyone else. I’ll go up and wait for him.” With that he said, “If Sun Tailai isn’t in, I’ll wait for him upstairs. When he gets back, tell him to come and see me.” “Yes, sir,” said the waiter. Zheng Xiong went on in. Then the monk came in from outside, and he too slapped the counter. “Sun Tailai! His Lordship the Monk is here today to give you some custom, you little punk!” Liao Tinggui thought, “When a wall starts to fall, everybody gives it a push.”
One look at the monk and Liao Tinggui remembered: this was the monk who had cheated them out of meals! Some time before, knowing that Wanzhen Tower was run by a bully, Ji Gong had twice eaten here without paying. That first day the monk came to Wanzhen Tower and ate more than ten strings of cash’s worth. “Come with me to the money shop to collect it,” the monk said. Liao Tinggui sent a waiter with him. They left the wine shop, and in the blink of an eye the monk was gone. The waiter came back and said he had lost the man, and the boss slapped his face and gave him a good cursing. The next day the monk came again. As soon as he was in the door he said, “Boss, yesterday I ran into a friend and never brought you the money. Today I’ve come specially to bring it and settle up.” Everyone thought, “So the monk isn’t a cheat after all. If he were out to eat and drink for nothing, he wouldn’t have come back today.” The monk sat down again and called for wine and dishes, whatever was best, until he had a whole tableful. When he had finished, he had the waiter reckon it up. The two bills together came to twelve taels and eight mace of silver. “That’s not much,” said the monk. He went over to the counter. “Boss, I’ve eaten twelve taels eight mace. Come with me to the money shop and get it.” Liao Tinggui thought, “Yesterday I sent a waiter with him and he lost him. Today I won’t send a waiter.” “Monk,” said Liao Tinggui, “yesterday you said you’d get money from the money shop, and then you ran off. And today it’s the money shop again?” “I didn’t run off yesterday,” said the monk. “I met a friend and stopped to talk, and the waiter and I lost each other.” “I’ll go and get it with you,” said Liao Tinggui, and he followed the monk out of the wine shop. “Have you ever seen a man fly?” said the monk. “No, never,” said Liao Tinggui. “Watch,” said the monk. “This is a man flying.” Pit-pat, pit-pat, off he ran as fast as his legs would carry him, and as he ran he chanted:
“The wine’s like nectar, the meat is fat;I’m roaring drunk, so home I go at that. The boss won’t give a monk credit? Never mind:this poor monk’s legs can fly and leave him behind.”
Liao Tinggui gave chase, and in the blink of an eye the monk was gone. Back at the shop Liao Tinggui said, “The monk’s run off again. Whenever I see him, I’ll grab him and give him a beating.” And today the monk had come of his own accord. He slapped the counter and said, “Sun Tailai! His Lordship the Monk is here today to give you some custom.” One look and Liao Tinggui flared up. “You rotten monk! You cheated us of two meals, and now you dare come here and make trouble?” “That’s a good one,” said the monk. Zheng Xiong turned his head. “Come upstairs, Master.” When Liao Tinggui saw this he was too frightened to go on. “Reverend Master, you came with Master Zheng. Please, go on up.” “He is my master,” said Zheng Xiong. “Yes, yes,” said Liao Tinggui, and he dared say nothing more.
