話說柴元祿、杜振英來到醉露居一見濟公，和尚說：「二位辛苦。」柴元祿說：「聖僧放心罷，刑部里全都托置好了。」和尚說：「甚好，二位坐下喝酒罷。」柴元祿、杜振英坐下，喝了幾盅酒，說：「聖僧，咱們哪去辦案去？」和尚說：「先喝酒，別忙，少時我自有道理。」柴、杜、雷、馬四位班頭，是心急似箭，恨不能一時把賊人拿住好交差。和尚也不著急，左一壺，右一壺，杯杯淨，盞盞乾。四位班頭又問說：「聖僧，你老人家慈悲慈悲罷。」和尚說：「有什麼事，先喝完了酒再辦。」四個人乾著急無法，喝來喝去直喝到掌燈以後，和尚這才說：「咱們走罷。」四位班頭給了酒飯帳，柴頭說：「聖僧，方才到刑部去托人情，里外共用了二百兩，給雷爺、陳爺他們四位留下一百兩，還剩下二百兩，交給你老人家罷。」和尚說：「我不要，給你們四位分罷，可以隨便置點衣裳。」

Now, Chai Yuanlu and Du Zhenying came to Zuilu Tavern and found Ji Gong. “You two have had a hard time of it,” said the monk. “Rest easy, holy monk,” said Chai Yuanlu. “Everything at the Ministry of Justice has been seen to.” “Very good,” said the monk. “Sit down, you two, and have a drink.” Chai Yuanlu and Du Zhenying sat down and drank a few cups. “Holy monk,” they said, “where are we going to make the arrest?” “Drink first, don’t rush,” said the monk. “In a little while I’ll know what to do.” The four head constables, Chai, Du, Lei and Ma, were as impatient as an arrow on the string; they wished they could lay hands on the thieves that very moment and report the case closed. But the monk was in no hurry at all: a pot here, a pot there, every cup drained, every bowl emptied. Again the four head constables asked, “Holy monk, sir, have mercy on us!” “Whatever there is to do,” said the monk, “we’ll do it when we’ve finished the wine.” The four could only fret, with nothing to be done. They drank and drank until after the lamps were lit, and only then did the monk say, “Let’s go.” The four head constables paid for the wine and food. “Holy monk,” said Constable Chai, “the favours we asked at the Ministry of Justice just now cost two hundred taels, inside and out. We left a hundred for Master Lei, Master Chen and the other two, and that leaves two hundred. Let me hand it back to you, sir.” “I don’t want it,” said the monk. “Split it among the four of you. You can buy yourselves some clothes.”

The four head constables would not take it, but the monk insisted, and at last the four thanked Ji Gong. They all left the tavern together. “Four head constables, come with me,” said the monk. “Where to?” asked Constable Chai. “Never you mind,” said the monk. “This monk has somewhere to go. I guarantee that when we get there, you’ll only have to reach out your hands.” The four head constables knew that Ji Gong could foresee things before they happened, and they followed close behind him. They came to a lane and stopped at the gate of a brothel, where a big lantern hung inside the gateway. “You four,” said the monk, “what place is this?” “Master, you know perfectly well and you’re asking anyway,” said Constable Chai. “This is the imperial brothel.” Why was it called the imperial brothel? In the Song dynasty, the girls in these houses were all daughters of great official families whose households had been convicted and their property confiscated. The young ladies were cast into the brothel and made prostitutes by imperial decree, and so it was called the imperial brothel, as though they served in the emperor’s own household.

The monk came to the gate of the brothel and, though he knew full well, asked Chai Yuanlu and the other three head constables what place this was. Constable Chai told him it was the brothel. “You four go in first,” said the monk. “This monk is going to see a bit of the world today.” “What are we doing here?” asked Constable Chai. “Don’t ask,” said the monk. The four head constables began to see what he was about, and only then did they go in.
