話說濟公禪師在錢塘縣衙門喝著酒，忽然想起事來，立刻告辭。知縣說：「聖僧忙什麼？」和尚說：「我還有事，你我改日再談。」說著話，和尚站起來往外走，知縣親自送出來，和尚拱手而別，一直出了錢塘關，來到靈隱寺。方到廟中，由外面雷鳴、陳亮、秦元亮、馬兆熊四個人進來。

Now, Chan Master Ji Gong was drinking in the Qiantang county yamen when suddenly something came to his mind, and he took his leave at once. “What’s the hurry, holy monk?” said the magistrate. “I’ve still got business,” said the monk. “We’ll talk another day, you and I.” As he spoke the monk stood up and went out. The magistrate saw him out in person, the monk cupped his hands in farewell, and he went straight out through the Qiantang Gate and came to Lingyin Temple. He had only just reached the temple when in from outside came four men: Lei Ming, Chen Liang, Qin Yuanliang and Ma Zhaoxiong.

A word of explanation: Qiantang County had sent officers to take eight thieves under escort to the Ministry of Justice — Jia Hu, the White-Faced Wolf; Wei Ying, the Red-Haired Roarer; Huang Qing, the Cloud Dragon’s Better; Xie Guang, Little Mourning Spirit; Gao Shun, the Black-Haired Scorpion; Sun Jiuru; and Yueming and Yuelang — and the dispatch was handed in. Hua Yuanzhi and Wu Dingfang went before Lord Lu, the Minister of Justice, and told him the whole business of Cangzhen Temple from beginning to end. Only then did Lord Lu understand. At once he took his seat in the hall together with the vice ministers of the Left and the Right, and ordered the thieves brought in. His men brought the thieves up into the great hall; they all knelt, gave their names one by one and knocked their heads on the floor. Lord Lu struck the sounding block. “You robbed Luo Shengyuan’s household at Jinsha Ridge in Zhenjiang Prefecture,” he said, “killed the escort guards and carried off the goods. How many of you were there in all? And why did you pass yourselves off as Lei Ming, Chen Liang and the others, four men in all? Tell the truth and spare your hides a beating.”
眾賊已然在錢塘縣畫了供，料想不招也是不行，這才從頭至尾一說。陸大人看來有錢塘縣送來的供底，與眾賊的口供相符，這才吩咐將眾賊釘鐐入獄，不分首從，均擬斬立決。案後訪拿李猛、陳清。隨後標監牌提雷鳴、陳亮、秦元亮、馬兆熊上堂，四個人給大人叩頭。陸大人說：「雷鳴陳亮你等四個人，這場官司被屈含冤，要不是遇見本部堂，你等性命休矣。現在我已把原案真贓實犯的賊人拿住，將你四個人當堂釋放。你等趕緊回家，安分度日，不準在途中逗留，如再闖出禍來，本部堂必定重重的辦你。」雷鳴、陳亮等，立刻給陸大人叩頭說：「謝謝大人恩典，我等銘感於五中，但願大人公侯萬代，祿位高升。」

The thieves had already put their marks to confessions at Qiantang County, and they reckoned it would do them no good to hold out now, so they told it all from beginning to end. Lord Lu saw that the draft confessions sent over by Qiantang County agreed with what the thieves said, and only then did he order them put in irons and thrown into prison. Ringleaders and followers alike, he proposed that all be beheaded without delay. Li Meng and Chen Qing were to be hunted down and brought in later. Next he had a warrant sent to the jail to fetch Lei Ming, Chen Liang, Qin Yuanliang and Ma Zhaoxiong up to the hall, and the four of them knocked their heads on the floor before His Lordship. “Lei Ming, Chen Liang, you four men,” said Lord Lu, “in this case you were wronged and made to suffer for others. If you hadn’t come before this court, your lives would have been finished. I have now caught the real thieves of the original case, with the true loot, and I release the four of you here in open court. Go home quickly and live quietly within the law. You are not to linger along the road. If you stir up any more trouble, this court will deal with you most severely.” At once Lei Ming, Chen Liang and the others knocked their heads on the floor before Lord Lu. “We thank Your Lordship for your grace,” they said. “We will carry it engraved on our hearts. May Your Lordship’s house bear dukes and marquises for ten thousand generations, and may you rise ever higher in rank and pay.”
