The bandits wrongly slay Zheng Hu;Elder Ji restores the well and raises alms

Now, when Guangliang went to the back and looked, he saw that Zheng Hu had been murdered and that the two patrons had vanished without a trace. Looking again, he found a note on the table with eight lines written on it. It read:

Over a petty grudge we came to Lingyin,to find Crazy Ji and stake our lives on it.Had Crazy Ji been in the temple today, our blades would have hacked him to pieces. We killed Zheng Hu, yet our vengeance is not done;we stole the rosary, yet our purpose is not fulfilled. If you would know these heroes’ names:Carefree and Unfettered, the two of us.

A word of explanation: the two men who had come were bandits from Xichuan Circuit. One was Wang Dong, called the Carefree Recluse (Xiaoyao Jushi); the other was Li Liang, called the Unfettered Immortal (Zizai Sanxian). The two of them were sworn brothers of Xie Guang, the Little Mourning Spirit, and Huang Qing, the Cloud Dragon’s Better, and they had come here to avenge their friends. That young rascal Zheng Hu had never done a good deed in all his life either. Retribution comes round in its turn: he was wronged in the deed but not in his fate. If Zongyin had not claimed that he and Crazy Ji were master and disciple, Wang Dong and Li Liang might not have killed him. This too was bound to happen. When Guangliang and the others saw what had happened, they hurried to report it to Zongyin. When Zongyin heard, he burst out wailing. “Crazy Ji must have put them up to this, to kill my nephew! I’m taking him to court, no matter what!” At once he told Guangliang to hurry to Qiantang County and report it to the authorities. Guangliang came to Qiantang County and cried out that he had been wronged. “What’s the matter?” asked the runners on duty that day. “I’m the prior of Lingyin Temple by West Lake,” said Guangliang, “and my name is Guangliang. Yesterday Zheng Hu, our old abbot’s nephew from his family before he took vows, was murdered in the temple. The bandits got away. They stole a pearl rosary and left a poem of eight lines. That monk Crazy Ji put them up to it. I beg His Honour to right this wrong.” The runner on duty went in and reported it, and His Honour at once took the bench and ordered the monk who had brought the complaint brought up. Guangliang came into the hall and knelt. “What is your name?” said His Honour. “Which temple are you from?” “I am from Lingyin Temple,” said Guangliang, “and my name is Guangliang. Yesterday two patrons came, saying they were looking for Crazy Ji. We have now driven Crazy Ji out of the temple and struck his name off the rolls, and he is living at Sanjiao Temple. One of these two men was surnamed Wang and the other Li. They stayed the night at our temple, and in the night they killed Zheng Hu, the old abbot’s nephew, stole a pearl rosary and left a note. It must be Crazy Ji, nursing a grudge because we threw him out, who sent them to kill.” The county magistrate asked for the note and read it. “It says as plain as day that they have a feud with Crazy Ji and came for revenge. Who told you to put them up in your temple? Crazy Ji is a holy monk who has attained the Way, and you want to slander a good man instead. Go back this minute and get Zheng Hu laid in his coffin, and wait for this court to catch the killers for you.” “Have mercy, Your Honour,” said Guangliang. “These men were sent by Crazy Ji. I beg Your Honour to arrest him and punish him.” The magistrate slapped the sounding block. “Your mouth is full of nonsense! Get out of here this minute. If I weren’t making allowances for your being a monk, I would deal with you severely!” At once the officers drove Guangliang out of the courtroom. There was nothing Guangliang could do, and he went back on his own. The magistrate sent someone to invite Ji Gong. The man went to Sanjiao Temple and found Ji Gong. “His Honour invites the holy monk to the yamen. He has something to discuss with you.”
