Now, the Long-Browed Arhat, together with the Perfected One Zixia, the Old Immortal Dongfang Taiyue, Ji Gong and the Tiger-Taming Arhat, led the Eight Demons to Songquan Temple on Mount Jiusong. On this mountain there was a cave, the Ziwu Wind-and-Thunder Demon-Sealing Cave. The Long-Browed Arhat took up the Demon-Subduing Pestle, muttered a spell under his breath, and by his magic arts put the Eight Demons inside the Ziwu Wind-and-Thunder Demon-Sealing Cave. At once he shut the cave door and locked it fast with an incantation. “You eight demons,” said Elder Lingkong, “I’m putting you away, so you’ll make no more trouble.

“At the hour of zi, around midnight, wind and thunder rise in this cave and keep the Eight Demons pinned down. But someone may come to get them out, and then there would be fresh trouble, so we must post someone to guard the mouth of the cave.” As they were talking, Little Wuchan came in and bowed to them all. “Wuchan,” said Elder Lingkong, “go quickly and fetch Ling Yuanhua for me. I want him to guard this cave.” Wuchan said he would, and before long he came back with the Perfected One Meihua, Ling Yuanhua. When Ling Yuanhua had finished bowing to everyone, he said, “Arhat, you called for me. What are your orders?” “I am setting you to guard this cave,” said Elder Lingkong. “Hang the Demon-Slaying Sword and the Demon-Subduing Pestle over the cave door. Whenever the Eight Demons come out, cut them down with the Demon-Slaying Sword.” Ling Yuanhua nodded and agreed. He stayed there to guard the Eight Demons and to cultivate the Way himself. Only then did Lingkong invite them all into the temple to sit down. “Many thanks to the Arhat and the Perfected One for saving me,” said Ji Gong. “I must take Wuchan with me. I’m going to hold a charity feast and rebuild Jinshan Temple. Otherwise, since it was over me that the Eight Demons wrecked Jinshan Temple, the sin I’ve made would be a great one.”
伏虎羅漢也告辭，往他方前去渡人。濟公先帶領悟禪告了辭，來到金山寺，寫了帖子，遣悟禪去請人。所有是濟公的徒弟到過的地方，幽州府，龍游縣、海潮縣、餘杭縣、石杭縣、常州府、鎮江府、丹陽縣、開化縣、臨安城、錢塘縣、仁和縣等處，所有濟公認識的都請，上至秦相官宦人家，紳董富戶，舉監生員，下至庶民，悟禪都給送了帖子，在金山寺八月初一日早降拈香，臨安城都吵嚷動了。花花太歲王勝仙一想：「濟公敕封護國散禪師，乃得道高僧。在金山寺辦善會，連我哥哥秦丞相都請，怎么會不請我呢？」這天有風月公子馬明來拜王勝仙，二人談起這件事，王勝仙說：「現在濟顛在金山寺辦善會，請秦丞相，怎么不請我呢？」馬明說：「也沒請我。」王勝仙說：「他不請咱們，咱們倒要去帶一千銀子香資，到金山寺去一趟。」馬明說：「也好。」立刻雇了一隻大船，帶著二十個家人，船上寫著二桿大旗，上寫「金山寺進香，施助白銀一千兩」，由臨安城起身，夠奔鎮江府金山寺。

Every place Ji Gong’s disciples had been to, Youzhou Prefecture, Longyou County, Haichao County, Yuhang County, Shihang County, Changzhou Prefecture, Zhenjiang Prefecture, Danyang County, Kaihua County, Lin’an, Qiantang County, Renhe County and the rest: everyone Ji Gong knew was invited, from Chancellor Qin and the households of officials, the gentry, the local directors and the wealthy, the provincial graduates, students of the imperial academy and licentiates at the top, down to the common people at the bottom. Wuchan delivered cards to them all, asking them to honour Jinshan Temple early on the first day of the eighth month and offer incense, and all Lin’an was abuzz with it. Wang Shengxian, the Flashy Libertine, thought to himself, “By imperial decree Ji Gong is the Free-Roaming Chan Master, Protector of the Nation, a high monk who has attained the Way. He’s holding a charity feast at Jinshan Temple and he’s invited even my brother, Chancellor Qin. How can he not invite me?” That day Ma Ming, the Young Master of Wind and Moon, came to call on Wang Shengxian, and the two of them got to talking about it. “Crazy Ji is holding a charity feast at Jinshan Temple,” said Wang Shengxian. “He’s invited Chancellor Qin, so why hasn’t he invited me?” “He hasn’t invited me either,” said Ma Ming. “He won’t invite us?” said Wang Shengxian. “Then we’ll go anyway. We’ll take a thousand taels of silver as an incense gift and pay Jinshan Temple a visit.” “All right,” said Ma Ming. At once they hired a big boat and took twenty servants along. On the boat they put up two big banners that read: “Pilgrims to Jinshan Temple, donating one thousand taels of white silver.” They set off from Lin’an and made for Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang Prefecture.
