Leaving poems in his notes, he parts from his wife to call on a friend;Begging Ji Gong to divine, they search for the missing husband

Now, after Gao Guotai had gone back to Chenghuang Hill for the second time, he lived in the old rooms as before. That evening he sat facing Madam Lu. “My dear,” said Guotai, “tomorrow I’m going to call on a friend.” “If you’re going out tomorrow,” said Madam Lu, “I still have two hundred coppers my aunt gave me to buy needles and thread. Take them for tea and a bite to eat.” With that she brought them out. Guotai, looking ashamed, took them in his hand. “Go to sleep, my dear.” Madam Lu fell asleep. Guotai sat under the lamp, staring blankly in a daze. He looked up to heaven and heaved a long sigh, but what use was it? A wave of misery came over him. He took up his brush, wrote three notes and weighted them down under the inkstone. When dawn came he wanted to wake his wife, but was afraid it would only distress her. He stood up, hardened his heart and walked straight out. At the temple there was a lay attendant who kept the incense, surnamed Feng, named Feng Shun, now over sixty. Being old, he rose early, and he was sweeping the courtyard. Seeing Gao Guotai come out, he asked, “Mr. Gao, why are you up so early?” “Uncle,” said Guotai, “open the gate for me. I’m going down the hill to call on a friend.” Feng Shun opened the gate, and Gao Guotai went down Chenghuang Hill and away.

When Madam Lu woke and found her husband gone, she was badly startled and hurried out to look for him everywhere. Feng Shun told her, “Mr. Gao left first thing this morning.” Madam Lu hurried back and searched all over the room, and there on one side she saw three notes. On the first was written:

“Hard times, bad luck: each day is a struggle;shamed and helpless, I lodge in a nuns’ cloister.Though in the Buddha’s gate there is a kinswoman’s kindness,it only makes me a laughingstock to others.”

Madam Lu took the meaning of these lines: he was saying that because he was poor he could not keep a household or make his way in the world, and had to shelter in a temple with his wife — and how could people not laugh at him for it? Then she looked at the second, which read:

“Gone now to other parts, with little hope of return;whether I live or die, I cannot tell myself. Most likely in this life we shall not meet again;if fate allows, we’ll be husband and wife in the next.”

Madam Lu saw that these two lines were words of final parting: once gone this time, he would never come back; alive or dead, no one could say; most likely they would never be together again, and could only be joined in the life to come. Then she looked at the third poem, which read:

“I leave this note, and as I write, grief hides within;I curse my own uselessness, and curse my hard lot more.I send these lines to my good wife: ponder them with care —trust yourself to another, find one who’ll paint your brows.”

When Madam Lu read this third poem she burst out wailing, as though her insides were torn apart. In the midst of her grief the old nun came over and asked, “Niece, why are you so upset?” Madam Lu told her how Gao Guotai had left three death poems and gone, and that it was nine chances in ten he would not live. “Child, don’t fret,” said the old nun. “I have an idea. At Lingyin Temple by West Lake there is a Ji Gong, a living Buddha in this world. He can reckon on his fingers and knows the past and the future. I’ll send our incense keeper Feng Shun to Lingyin Temple to invite the old gentleman here and have him work it out for us: where has Mr. Gao gone? Where has he ended up? Then we can send someone to bring him back.” At once Madam Lu said, “If that’s so, send someone quickly to fetch Ji Gong.”

The old nun sent Feng Shun down the hill to fetch Ji Gong. The first time he went to Lingyin Temple, Ji Gong was not there. The second time he went, he found Lingyin Temple surrounded by troops. The third time, Feng Shun asked around and learned that Chancellor Qin had had Ji Gong taken away in chains, and so three or four days were lost. That day Feng Shun went down the hill once more to look for Chan Master Ji Gong, and saw the Lord Arhat coming up the hill with Zhao Wenhui and Su Beishan. Feng Shun hurried over and saluted him. “Master, you’ve come at last, venerable sir! I’ve been to the temple time after time looking for you. How is it you’re so at leisure today? Where are you going just now?” “I’m going to your temple to find the old nun,” said Ji Gong. “We’re bringing someone there to become a nun.” “Good, good, good,” said Feng Shun. “Our Abbot was just wanting to ask you about something urgent, venerable sir.” “What’s happened at your temple?” asked Zhao Wenhui and Su Beishan. Feng Shun told them the whole business of Gao Guotai from beginning to end, every detail of it, and then they all went on together into the nunnery.

Feng Shun led the way into the temple and through to the west courtyard. It had buildings on three sides: three rooms each to the east and west, and three to the north. Feng Shun took them all into the north rooms. Squire Zhao looked about him: the room was spotlessly clean. Against the north wall stood a long narrow table with a great many sutra scrolls laid out on it. In front of it was an Eight Immortals table with chairs on either side. Ji Gong sat in the chair at the head, Zhao Wenhui sat down in the lower seat, and Su Beishan took a chair off to one side. Looking up, they saw a set of couplet scrolls on the wall facing them, very finely written. In the middle hung one large scroll, on which was written:

“All I love is quiet seclusion, far from the vulgar world;against the hill I have built a little thatched hut.A square pond of half a mu, one mirror of water;a few willow trees, a few rows of bamboo. When the spring wine is warm, I keep my guests till they are drunk;where the night lamp glows red, I read my books. The locks of profit and the reins of fame I have cast off entirely:my heart is a piece of ice in a jade pot.”

And on either side was a couplet, which read:

“The green hills never change: a painting a thousand years old;the clear waters flow on: a poem for ten thousand ages.”

Below was the signature: ‘From the clumsy brush of Gao Guotai.’ Su Beishan looked and said, “Holy monk, see what a gifted, cultivated scholar Gao Guotai really is. What Feng Shun told us just now was quite true. Look at this couplet — what fine calligraphy. Holy monk, venerable sir, show your great compassion: find him and bring him back. I’ll help him along. I’ll find him a teaching post, and when the great examination year comes round I’ll give him silver besides, so that he can sit for an official career.” “Good,” said the monk. “This is merit for you too, Squire.” As they were talking, the old nun Qingzhen came with her disciples and her niece to pay their respects to the holy monk, begging the arhat to show his great compassion. “This is my niece, Lu Suzhen. Her husband, Gao Guotai, left her here at my temple and went off without a word, and it’s been three or four days now. Holy monk, I beg you, show your great compassion and work out where he is.” “That’s easy,” said the monk. “Today we rescued someone, a girl of a good family who fell by mischance into the pleasure quarters. She wants to leave the world, and we mean to send her here to your temple. Take her as your disciple.” “Whatever you instruct, Master,” said the old nun, “your disciple will obey.” “She’ll be brought here shortly,” said Zhao Wenhui, “and I’ll give your temple two hundred taels of silver as an incense gift.” The old nun thanked Squire Zhao and pleaded again: “Holy monk, first work it out for us: where has Gao Guotai ended up?” Ji Gong consulted his inner light and gave three slaps in a row. “Aiya!” said the monk. “It’s all over, all over!” Madam Lu, standing beside them, turned pale with fright. “Holy monk, have mercy, find some way to save him!” Qingzhen begged him piteously too. “What time is it now?” asked the monk. “It’s already the beginning of the noon hour,” said Feng Shun. “Right now this man is a hundred and eighty li from here,” said Ji Gong, “and when the sun goes down he'll be in mortal danger” “Master, venerable sir, have mercy!” said Su Beishan. “If I bring him back,” said the monk, “you can set up a school for him.” “Your disciple will see him settled,” said Su Beishan. “Send a servant with me to fetch him,” said Ji Gong, “and bring two hundred in silver for travelling money.” “Su Lu,” said Su Beishan, “go quickly to the money shop, draw two hundred taels of silver and go with the holy monk to find Mr. Gao.” “Feng Shun,” said Qingzhen, “you go with Ji Gong.” Madam Lu hastily kowtowed. “Zhao Wenhui, Su Beishan,” said Ji Gong, “you two wait till Yin Chunxiang comes and see her into the order. Then you can go.” The two of them agreed.

Su Lu brought the silver, and Ji Gong left the Qingjing Nunnery with the two of them. When they reached the foot of the hill, he took one step forward and three steps back. “Master,” said Su Lu, “you’ve got a hundred and eighty li to cover before dark, venerable sir, and at this rate you won’t even manage eight. It would be easier if you walked some other way.” “Walking another way’s no trouble,” said the monk. “Two steps forward, three steps back.” Feng Shun laughed to himself. “Master, by dark you’ll have walked yourself back home. What good is walking like this?” “If I go fast,” said Ji Gong, “can you keep up?” “We can keep up,” said the two of them. “Good,” said Ji Gong, “then I’m off.” With that, off he went at a run, and in the blink of an eye he was out of sight. The two hurried after him. They had run no more than two or three li when they were drenched in sweat. “Let’s rest in the wood,” they said. The moment they stepped in among the trees, the monk said, “Only just got here?” “We haven’t even stopped to rest,” said the two of them, “and you got here long ago, venerable sir.” “I’ve had two naps already,” said the monk. “Are those legs yours?” “Our legs grow on our bodies,” said the two. “If they’re not ours, whose are they?” “They’re yours, all right,” said the monk, “but when I chant a spell, they’ll walk.” “Good, good,” said Feng Shun. “Chant your spell, venerable sir.” When the monk saw that both of them were standing ready, he said, “I’m chanting the spell.” Muttering under his breath, he said, “Om mani padme hum! Om! By command — he!” The two of them lost all control of their bodies, and their legs ran off with them as if flying. “Master,” cried Su Lu, “this is terrible! There’s nothing but trees ahead. If we crash into them, we’re dead for sure.” “Never mind,” said the monk. “I’m here. When you get there you won’t hit them.” And sure enough, when they got there, they passed straight through the trees.

As they were running, a man came out of a village with a bowl in his hand. Ji Gong opened his eyes wide and saw that this was an unfilial son. His surname was Wu and his name Yun, and at home he had only his widowed mother. Today they were having dumplings, and his mother had made them all. Wu Yun came home, looked, and saw she hadn’t bought any vinegar. He flew into a temper and scolded his mother: “The older you get, the more muddle-headed you are! Who ever eats dumplings without buying vinegar? You’re really useless!” His mother made no reply. He stormed out in a huff with the bowl to buy vinegar, and Ji Gong saw him. Ji Gong had already worked it all out. He pointed a finger, and Wu Yun found himself running along with Feng Shun and the other man. He couldn’t help shouting, “I’m not going anywhere! What’s all this? My legs have gone mad!” In the ears of all three there was nothing but the whoosh of the wind, and they ran on as if riding a cloud. Then they saw something gleaming white ahead: a river. “Holy monk,” Su Lu shouted, “stop me running! There’s a river ahead! If I fall in, I’m dead!” “No matter,” said the monk. “Put in a bit more effort and you’ll be across.” When they reached the river they seemed to fly, and they were over it. “I’d better find a tree quick and grab hold of it,” Su Lu thought. “That’ll do it.” At long last he saw a tree. Su Lu threw his arms round it and toppled to the ground. Feng Shun fell down too, and so did the man who had gone for vinegar. The monk came up. “Get up, you lot.” “We can’t get up,” said the three of them. The monk took out a piece of medicine and divided it among the three to eat. They felt their bodies could move again and stood up. Wu Yun just stood there dazed. A traveller came along from the other direction. “May I ask what place this is?” said Su Lu. “This is Xiaoliu Village,” the man answered. “Where are you gentlemen going?” “We’re going from the city of Lin’an to Yuhang County,” said Su Lu. “You’ve gone past it,” said the man. “Yuhang County is only twenty li off.” Wu Yun heard this. “Aiya! I’ve smashed the vinegar bowl, I never got to eat the dumplings, and I’m two hundred li from home. How am I going to get back now?” “I’ll just whisk you back again!” said the monk. “Please don’t whisk me anywhere,” said Wu Yun. “If I couldn’t stop and ended up beyond the northern frontier, how would I ever get home?” From there he walked for two days and a night before he reached home. And from then on, whenever he saw a monk begging for small alms he ran, so scared had he become of poor monks.

We will leave that there. Our story turns to Su Lu, who asked the holy monk, “Are we going to Yuhang today to find Mr. Gao?” “Just so,” said Ji Gong. And so the three of them headed straight for Yuhang.
