Now, Su Beishan’s wife, Madam Zhao, was chatting in her room with her maids and serving women when they heard a loud noise outside. They all turned to look. Outside, a blaze of light shot up to the sky, and there was fire on the flowerpot stands in the courtyard and on the peach, silkthorn and pagoda trees. The serving women and maids went over to look. It was fire, all right — but when they pinched it with their fingers, it went out.

A word of explanation: this was a ruse to lure the tiger away from the mountain, played by Chen Liang, the Masterful White Ape. When Chen Liang saw everyone come out, he came down off the roof, slipped round with a quick turn and went into the room. He looked about him. The room was exquisitely elegant. On the walls hung calligraphy and paintings by famous hands — tall hanging scrolls and paired couplets, landscapes and figures, works in fine line and in free brushwork, flowers and birds. Along the front eaves stood a bed of Xiang Consort bamboo, hung with bed curtains and drapes. On the floor were tables, chairs and benches, set out with antiques and things for everyday use.

Chen Liang was still looking round the room when he heard the old women and maids outside saying, “This must be those two rascals Fu’er and Lu’er up to mischief. They made this fire.” With that, the whole lot of them made straight for the room. Still looking round, Chen Liang heard that they were coming in, and he thought to himself that to be caught hiding in the room would look very bad. In his need a clever idea came to him: he lifted the bed curtain, crawled under the bed and hid there. The women came in with no idea that anyone was hidden in the room. They had only just sat down when footsteps sounded outside. “Who’s there?” Qiuxiang called quickly. Someone outside answered: it was Defu, one of the menservants. “What is it?” said Qiuxiang. “The master’s back,” said Defu, “with a monk. And this monk won’t sit in the study and won’t sit in the reception hall. He wants to come and sit in the mistress’s room! The master says the mistress had better get out of the way, quick.” When the lady heard this, she hurriedly told the maids to tidy the room, thinking, “The master is really going too far. There’s a reception hall out front, and a study besides — why let a monk into the bedroom?” She was still turning it over when Delu came in from outside. “Madam, go quickly! The master is already on his way in with the monk.” The lady hurried out of the way. The maids had not yet finished tidying when they heard the master’s voice outside: “Master, now that I’ve invited you here, treat my home just like your own family’s. Don’t stand on ceremony. Sit in whatever room you like.” Under the bed, Chen Liang thought to himself, “That bully inviting a monk into his house — it’s no good monk, that’s for sure. Must be some randy monk.” Outside, Ji Gong roared with laughter. “No good monk, eh? I was afraid you’d get tired of waiting, so I came early to keep our appointment.” “Well, I never,” thought Su Beishan. “The monk has run into my wife’s room to keep an appointment!” Aloud he said, “Master, you’re drunk.” “I’m not drunk,” said the monk, and with that he went on in. Chen Liang was thunderstruck. The newcomer was none other than Ji Gong, the elder of Lingyin Temple by West Lake. “How on earth has Ji Gong come here?” he thought.
A word of explanation: after Ji Gong had sent Chen Liang on his way, he went back to Squire Liang’s house in Yunlan Town. “Holy monk, you’re back,” said Squire Liang. “I’ve been very uneasy. Ever since you went out in the night chasing the thief, you never came back. I sent my men all over looking for you. Where did you go?” “I went to the Xiangyun Temple on Mount Wuxian to have a look,” said Ji Gong. “That temple has burned down to nothing — not a tile left, not a foot of timber standing.” Squire Liang ordered wine. When it was served, he kept the monk company over the cups and said, “Master, where have you come from? And who are all those people with you outside?” So Ji Gong told him the whole story from beginning to end: how the old nun Qingzhen of Chenghuang Hill had asked him to go to Yuhang County to find Gao Guotai, how he had taken Su Lu and Feng Shun along and found Gao Guotai, and how he was now going back to Lin’an — everything that had happened, in full detail. “So the holy monk went to find Gao Guotai!” said Squire Liang. “Our families were close. While his father was alive, he and I were sworn brothers. I never imagined his family had come down to such poverty.” He had his men invite Gao Guotai in. Before long Gao Guotai came inside, and Squire Liang asked him to sit. “Gao Guotai,” said Squire Liang, “do you know about your family’s past?” “I know a little,” said Gao Guotai. “Your father was named Gao Wenhua,” said Squire Liang. “He was a provincial graduate of Yuhang County, and he and I were sworn brothers. You were very young then — it’s more than ten years ago now. Later your father died, and you were still young, and no one sent me word, so we lost touch. I never imagined that in these few years without seeing you, you’d have come down to such poverty. It was only just now, when the holy monk mentioned your name, that I realized it was you.” At this Gao Guotai remembered that his mother had once spoken of it too. He quickly rose to his feet and bowed. “So you are my uncle! Your nephew pays his respects. Years ago I heard my mother speak of you, sir. It was only because our family fell on hard times and could not keep up with relatives and friends that I never came often to pay my respects to you, Uncle.” “Your younger brother Liang Shiyuan is studying hard just now,” said Squire Liang, “and he needs someone to guide him. You needn’t go back to Yuhang County. I’ll send for your family, and you can study with your brother and work hard together. When the year of the great examinations comes, the two of you can sit them together.” Gao Guotai nodded and agreed. “Squire Liang,” said Ji Gong, “this monk wants to beg alms of you.” “Holy monk,” said Squire Liang, “whatever you have to say, you have only to tell me.” “Spend a few hundred taels of silver,” said Ji Gong, “and buy back the burnt-out site of the Xiangyun Temple. Send for Liu Miaotong, give him five hundred taels of silver and tell him to go back to Mount Gutian. Build the Xiangyun Temple up again as it was, but make it the Xiangyun Nunnery, and bring the old nun Qingzhen from Chenghuang Hill, along with Gao Guotai’s family, to live there. That’s the alms this monk begs of you. Otherwise that old Daoist Zhang Miaoxing would have squeezed several thousand out of you anyway.” “Very well,” said Squire Liang. “I’ll do just as you say, Master.” And he promptly sent his men to find Liu Miaotong. By now Liu Miaotong’s burns had healed. He came to Squire Liang’s house, and the squire gave him five hundred taels of silver. Liu Miaotong, deeply grateful for the kindness, took the silver, said goodbye and went back to the Lingxiao Temple on Mount Gutian.

Squire Liang kept Gao Guotai there, and Feng Shun too, and sent trustworthy men straight to Chenghuang Hill to fetch the old nun Qingzhen and the others, and to bring Gao Guotai’s family back with them. When everything had been arranged, Chan Master Ji Gong at last took his leave. Squire Liang brought out several hundred taels of silver for Ji Gong to buy new clothes and pay for the road, but the monk laughed aloud. “Don’t trouble yourself, Squire. This monk always says: ‘First, hoard no cash; second, hoard no spite; then you sleep in peace and travel light.’ I don’t want money.” Ji Gong took Su Lu with him, said goodbye, left Yunlan Town and followed the highway straight toward Lin’an. All along the way the weather was clear and mild, and the monk sang whatever came into his head:

Ji Gong went on with Su Lu, eating when they were hungry and drinking when they were thirsty, setting out at dawn and stopping at nightfall. One day they reached Lin’an. Ahead of them stood a wine shop on the west side of the road, facing east. “Su Lu,” said the monk, “let’s have a cup of wine here before we go on.” Su Lu nodded and agreed. The moment they stepped into the wine shop, they saw Su Beishan there with Su Sheng, drinking. As soon as Squire Su saw Ji Gong come in, he hurried to his feet. “Master, you’re back! What a hard journey you must have had! Did you find Gao Guotai? And where has Feng Shun gone?” Ji Gong told him all about finding Gao Guotai and everything that had happened. “So that’s how it was,” said Su Beishan. “Master, you’ve been through a great deal. Please sit down and have a drink with me!” Ji Gong and Squire Su had only just sat down when an old man suddenly came in from outside, grey-headed and hoary, his beard and hair all white, a walking stick in his hand. In he came in a great flurry, raised the stick and brought it straight down at Squire Su’s head. Squire Su dodged quickly aside, pale with fright. “Old Master Han, you and I have known each other a long time, and besides, there’s never been any grudge between us, old or new. Why do you come at my head with your stick the moment you see me? What’s this about?” “Su Beishan,” said the old man, “today I’ll fight you to the death. I’m done with this old life of mine. My son has already gone to Qiantang County to bring charges against you, and I’m going to hang myself at your gate. I’ll have a complaint to lodge in the underworld!” Su Lu and Su Sheng quickly held the old man back. He was trembling all over with rage. Su Beishan had no idea what it was about either. The two servants helped the old man to sit down on a bench, and Su Beishan said, “Old Master Han, don’t get so worked up. What is it that makes you want to fight me to the death? Tell me plainly and let me hear it.” Old Master Han sat there a long while catching his breath. Then he heaved a sigh. “Su Beishan, it’s true my son owes you two hundred taels of silver. He shut up his business and promised to sell the house and pay you back. But not only wouldn’t you wait — you actually dared to send your men with a pack of thugs to carry off my daughter, beat my son and take a person in settlement of the account! The Han family has been in trade for generations. You carry off my daughter for no reason — is this to be borne?” When Su Beishan heard this, he said, “Old man, you’re mistaken! I truly knew nothing of this. There must be something behind it. These aren’t my men. Ask anyone — how could I do anything so cruel and wicked? Who was it that went to you for the money?” “It was your man, plain as day,” said Old Master Han. “When the silver was first brought to my son, he was the one who brought it.” Su Beishan thought for a long while but could not think who it might be. Ji Gong laughed aloud. “Su Beishan, Old Master Han, there’s no need for either of you to get worked up. I’ll take you to find this man. First send someone to fetch back Old Master Han’s son, Han Wencheng. There’s no need for him to go and bring charges at Qiantang County.” Su Sheng was sent, and before long he had brought Han Wencheng back. When Han Wencheng saw Su Beishan — enemies meeting face to face, eyes burning red — he said, “Su Beishan, I’m done with this life of mine!” “My worthy brother,” said Su Beishan, “you and I are close friends.
