Rescuing a loyal servant, they set out together for Qianjiakou;Meeting a sworn brother, each tells of the days apart

Now, when Yang Zaitian asked the assassin’s name in the study, the thief said, “My surname is Hua and my given name Yunlong. People call me the Thieving Rat of Heaven and Earth. I’m from Xichuan.” “No need to question him further, Elder Brother,” Prefect Zhao said. “I’ll take him to Chancellor Qin and await His Excellency’s judgement.” Yang Zaitian came over and thanked Ji Gong. “If the holy monk hadn’t come here, I’d be lying in my grave by now! From this day on I’ll never again dare to doubt monks and Taoists.” He had fresh cups and dishes laid out and poured wine for the monk, and they drank until the east grew light and the cock had crowed three times.

When it was full daylight there was a hubbub outside, and the gatekeeper came in to report: “A sedan chair has come from the prefect’s yamen to fetch His Honour. It’s waiting outside.” Before long Zhao Fu and Zhao Lu came in carrying a bundle of clothes. Prefect Zhao changed at once and asked, “Who sent you word? How did you know I was here?” “It was Li San, the night watchman from Ruyi Lane,” Zhao Fu said. “On Ji Gong’s orders he brought us word first thing this morning and told us to come here to the Yang residence to receive Your Honour.” Only when he heard this did Prefect Zhao understand, and he quickly finished dressing. He asked Ji Gong, “Will you take a sedan chair or a horse?” “You go ahead and escort the thief, Prefect,” Ji Gong said. “I’ll follow shortly.” The prefect took his leave at once and went out to his sedan chair, and Yang Zaitian saw him out. The four head constables, Chai Yuanlu, Du Zhenying, Lei Siyuan and Ma Anjie, escorted the thief straight to Chancellor Qin’s mansion, and someone went in to report. Ever since the monk and the prefect had left, Chancellor Qin had waited in his study until past the fourth watch. When the monk did not come, he felt worn out and lay down on his bed fully dressed. Soon it was light. He rose, washed his face, drank his tea and had just finished a snack when a servant came in and reported: “May it please Your Excellency, Prefect Zhao has brought his head constables with the thief they caught. They are outside the gate awaiting your instructions.” “Ask the prefect in first,” Chancellor Qin said, “and bring the thief in after.” The servant went out and said, “His Excellency invites you in!” Prefect Zhao came inside, paid his respects to Chancellor Qin, and told him point by point how they had caught the thief at the mouth of Ruyi Lane last night, all thanks to Ji Gong, who had made the capture.

Chancellor Qin at once ordered the thief brought in. The attendants on either side answered and brought him. Chancellor Qin looked him over: this thief was even more powerfully built than Liu Chang. He wore a suit of night-prowler’s clothes, and his eyes glared under bristling brows. “What is your surname?” Chancellor Qin said. “What is your name? Where are you from? You stole my jade bracelets and phoenix crown — where have you put them? Tell the truth now and spare your hide a beating!” The thief below said, “Your Excellency needn’t go into details. I’m from Xichuan, my name is Hua Yunlong, and I stole the jade bracelets and the phoenix crown.” “Where did you sell them?” Lord Qin asked. “I sold them to a passing merchant,” Hua Yunlong said. “I don’t know his name. I got thirteen hundred taels of silver for them, and afterwards I spent it all.” At these words Chancellor Qin flew into a rage. “My family heirlooms, stolen by the likes of you!” He was still in the heat of his anger, about to have the thief beaten, when someone came in from outside to report: “Chan Master Ji Gong is here!” Chancellor Qin gave orders to invite him in.
