On the run from trouble, two men cleverly save a man in trouble;Lei and Chen blunder into a bandits’ black inn

Now, Ji Gong had finished his wine and his meal in the tavern and had no money to pay the bill. The manager was refusing to let it go when the door curtain lifted and two men came in. The one in front stood nine feet tall, with shoulders broad and square. He wore a black satin warrior’s cap, a black satin robe with archer’s cuffs, a silk sash at his waist and black thin-soled boots. His face was dark as black gold, with heavy brows, wide eyes, a high nose and a big square mouth. This was Zheng Xiong, the Heavenly King of Fengshan Street in Lin’an, and he had a few attendants with him. Behind him came a man dressed as a young gentleman of martial training, handsome and refined. His surname was Ma and his given name Jun, and he was known as the White-Faced Zhuanzhu (Bailian Zhuanzhu). He came from Changshan County and was the most devoted of sons to his old mother. He and Zheng Xiong had passed the examinations in the same year and were the closest of friends. Ma Jun had come from Changshan County to Lin’an to visit Zheng Xiong, and when he saw that the sight had come back to Zheng Xiong’s mother’s eyes, he asked him, “How did the old lady’s eyes get better?” Zheng Xiong told him all about the birthday celebration and how Ji Gong had cured her. When Ma Jun heard this, he said, “If Ji Gong of Lingyin Temple can cure eyes — my mother can’t see either. Would you mind coming with me, elder brother, to plead with Ji Gong for me?” Zheng Xiong said, “Certainly.” The two went to Lingyin Temple together and asked, but they were told he was not in the temple: Ji Gong had been invited by the prefect of Lin’an, Zhao Fengshan, to go to Kunshan County and cure someone. There was nothing they could do. After they came back, they went looking several more times, but never found Ji Gong. Ma Jun was ready to take his leave and go home. “I’ll go along with you, Brother,” said Zheng Xiong, “and see something of the country.” They packed their bags, bought a great many things, took a few servants with them, and the two of them set out together.

That day, as they went along the road, the sky clouded over and a fine rain began to fall. Ahead lay a market town. When they reached the street and saw a tavern, Zheng Xiong said, “Brother, let’s have a cup of wine.” The two went into the tavern. As they made their way inside, they heard a commotion at the back. Zheng Xiong looked up and found himself face to face with Ji Gong. He hurried over and made his bow. “Have you been well, Master?” Chai and Du looked and saw it was someone they knew. “Lord Zheng, where have you two come from?” Zheng Xiong looked at them. “Why are you two heads dressed like this?” “We’re on urgent secret business,” said Head Constable Chai. “Master, what are you shouting about?” Zheng Xiong asked. “Oh, oh!” said the monk. “I’m being bullied to death!” “Who would dare bully you, venerable sir?” said Zheng Xiong. The monk pointed at the waiter. “Him.” The waiter took fright and ran. “Don’t get upset, Lord Zheng,” said Head Constable Chai. “Ask first why he was bullying the venerable monk.” “Master,” said Zheng Xiong, “why was he bullying you?” “We finished eating and he won’t let us go,” said the monk. “All he does is ask for money.” Zheng Xiong couldn’t help laughing. “If you eat a man’s food, who wouldn’t ask for money? That isn’t bullying you. Whatever it came to, I’ll pay it. Master, why did you come out without money?” “What do you mean, without money? I brought two hundred taels of silver.” “He brought two hundred taels,” said Head Constable Chai, “and gave every bit of it away in alms. He didn’t keep a single copper.” “Master,” said Zheng Xiong, “if you have no money, don’t sit down and eat. It’s lucky I came along. What if I hadn’t?” “If you hadn’t come,” said the monk, “I wouldn’t have eaten.” Zheng Xiong thought, “Well, isn’t that nice. He had it all worked out: he eats on me.” He quickly called Ma Jun over to be introduced, had a fresh set of cups and dishes laid out, and they all sat down to drink, Chai and Du with them.

They had only just settled in their seats when the door curtain moved and two men came in. The one in front was dressed as a young scholar, handsome and refined, in a blue silk scholar’s cap, a kingfisher-blue robe, white socks and cloud shoes, every inch the gentle man of letters. Close behind him came a man in a soft black satin turban, a short black lined jacket with a money belt round the waist, black lined trousers, white socks, leg wrappings and slip-on shoes, and over it all a black silk cloak. His face was a sallow, bluish white, with two fighting-cock brows, a pair of gull’s eyes, a hawk-beak nose and fleshless cheeks: a rabbit’s head and a snake’s eyes, a tortoise’s back and a snake’s waist. One look and Ji Gong knew this was no good man.
