李公著明，慷慨好施。鄉人王卓，傭居公家。其人少游惰，不能操農務，家屢貧。然小有技能，常為役務，每齎之厚。時無晨炊，向公哀乞，公輒給以升斗。一日告公曰：「小人日受厚恤，三四口幸不餓殍，然何可以久？乞主人貸我綠豆一石作資本。」公忻然授之。卓負去，年餘，一無所償，及問之，豆資已蕩然矣。公憐其貧，亦置不索。

Mr. Li Zhuming was a generous man who liked to give. A countryman of his, Wang Zhuo, was hired on and lived in his household. From his youth Wang had been idle and footloose. He could not do farm work, and his family was often poor. But he had a few small skills and was often given odd jobs, and each time Mr. Li paid him well. When there was nothing to cook for breakfast, he would come and beg, and Mr. Li always gave him a pint or a peck of grain. One day Wang said to him, “Every day I live on your generous charity, and by good luck the three or four mouths in my house do not starve. But how long can that last? I beg you, master, lend me a picul of mung beans to start a trade.” Mr. Li gladly gave them to him. Wang carried them off. A year and more went by and he paid back nothing. When Li asked about it, the money from the beans was all gone. Li pitied his poverty and let the matter drop.
