金世成

Jin Shicheng

Jin Shicheng was a man of Changshan. He had never been careful of his conduct. Suddenly he left his home and became an ascetic monk. He seemed mad, and ate filth as if it were a delicacy: whenever a dog or a sheep left its droppings in front of him, he would get down and eat them. He called himself a Buddha. Foolish men and women marvelled at what he did, and those who bowed to him as his disciples were counted by the thousands upon thousands. When Jin shouted at them to eat dung, none dared disobey. He built halls and pavilions at untold cost, and everyone was glad to give for them. The county magistrate, Lord Nan, disliked his strange ways. He had him seized and flogged, and ordered him to repair the Confucian temple. His followers ran to tell one another, “The Buddha is in trouble!” They vied with each other to collect money and save him. The temple halls were finished within a month, and the money came in faster than it ever did for the harshest tax-collector shouting at the door.

The Historian of the Strange says: I have heard that people all played on the holy man Jin’s name and called him “Jinshi Cheng Fo” — “in this life become a Buddha.” When a man’s conduct sinks to eating filth, it can sink no further. Flogging could not disgrace him; punishing him did some real good. How well Magistrate Nan applied the law! Yet that the school-temple should be left to fall down until a heretic must be troubled to rebuild it — that is a shame on the scholar-officials too.
