There was a man who did the bucket trick. His bucket held about a sheng. It had no bottom and was hollow inside, like the ones common conjurers use. He laid two mats out in the street, took a sheng measure and put it into the bucket. He drew it straight out again full of white rice and poured it onto a mat. Again he dipped and poured, and in a moment both mats were full. Then he measured it all back in, one measure after another, and when he had finished he lifted the bucket: it was as empty as before. The marvel was in how much there was.

Li Jiantian of Lijin was idling about a pottery works in Yanzhen. He wanted to buy a big jar and haggled with the potter over the price, but they could not agree and he left. That night more than sixty jars were still in the kiln, not yet taken out. When the potter opened it, it was empty. The potter was dismayed. He suspected Li, and went to his door to beg for them. Li made excuses and said he knew nothing about it. The potter pleaded hard, and at last Li said, “I unloaded the kiln for you, and not one jar is damaged. Aren’t they under the Kuixing Tower?” The potter went as he was told and looked, and there they all were, every one. The tower stood on the hill south of the town, a little over three li from the works. He hired labourers to carry them back, and it took them three days.
