單道士

单道士

Daoist Shan

Young Master Han came of an old family of my county. A Daoist named Shan, who was skilled at conjuring tricks, was staying with him; the young master loved his arts and made him an honoured guest at his table. Whether walking or sitting with others, Shan would suddenly vanish. The young master wanted him to teach the method, but Shan would not. The young master pressed him hard. “It is not that I begrudge you my art,” said Shan. “I am afraid it would ruin my Way. If the one I teach is a gentleman, well and good. If not, there are those who would use it to steal. You, sir, are in no danger of that, of course. But you might go out, see some beauty and desire her, and make yourself invisible to get into a woman’s chamber. That would be aiding wickedness and spreading lust. I dare not do as you ask.” The young master could not force him, but he was angry at heart, and secretly plotted with his servants to give Shan a whipping and shame him. Fearing he would slip away out of sight, they spread fine ash over the threshing floor. Black arts might make a man invisible, they reasoned, but wherever he stepped he must leave footprints, and they could strike fast wherever the prints appeared. So they lured Shan there and had men with ox whips set upon him at once. Shan suddenly vanished. Sure enough, there were footprints in the ash. The men lashed wildly left and right, and in a moment the trail was lost. The young master went home, and Shan arrived too. He said to the servants, “I cannot stay here any longer. You have waited on me all this time, and now that I am leaving I must repay you.” From his sleeve he brought out a bowl of fine wine, then reached in again and found a dish of food, and set them both out on the table. When he had set them out, he reached in again; after more than ten times, the table was full. Then he invited them all to drink, and they all got drunk. He put everything back into his sleeve, one piece at a time. Han heard of this marvel and had him perform again. Shan drew a city on the wall, pushed and knocked at it with his hand, and at once the city gate opened. He threw his bags, his clothes and his boxes in through the gate, then joined his hands in farewell and said, “I am going.” He leapt into the city, the gate closed behind him, and the Daoist was gone. Later it was heard that in the market at Qingzhou he taught children to draw ink circles on their palms and throw them at people in fun; wherever they threw, on a face or on clothes, the circle would come off the hand and land there like a stamp. It was also said that he was skilled in the arts of the bedchamber, and could make his private parts suck up strong liquor, a whole vessel of it. The young master once had him do it before his eyes.
