In the Inspector’s yamen, wounded pride drives Bai Yutang away;At the Nishui Spring, a search begins for the golden seal

Now, when Bai Yutang got back to his room, he could not settle his mind and could neither sit nor stand at ease. He wondered at it privately: “Why are my eyes twitching and my ears ringing today?” There was nothing for it but to tie on his close-fitting fighting jacket and sling his stone pouch at his side, just as if he were getting ready for a fight. All night long he was jumpy and uneasy and never properly slept. The next day he felt weary and listless and had no appetite; he sighed long sighs and short ones, and kept clenching his fists and rubbing his palms as if itching for a fight.

When evening came he meant to go to bed early. But lying there, a thousand thoughts and worries crowded into his heart at once; he tossed and turned and only grew more fretful. In a fit of temper he simply got up, dressed, slung on his stone pouch, belted on his sharp blade and went out into the courtyard to patrol front and back. He had gone round from the west side to the east when all at once he heard a hubbub of voices shouting, “Help! The west wing is on fire!” Bai Yutang hurried back over from the east side. Looking up, he saw a sheet of firelight, and in it a man standing on the roof of the main hall. He reached back into his pouch, took out a stone and let fly. There was a soft thwup, and the figure fell over and stood up again. “Bad!” Bai Yutang said to himself. By now all the runners had seen it too; they were shouting “Thief!” and trying to put out the fire at the same time. Bai Yutang caught sight of Yumo over there, waving his arms and pointing, giving orders to everyone, and hurried up to him. “Yumo, why aren’t you guarding the seal? What are you fussing over all this for?” That one sentence brought Yumo to his senses. He ran into the main hall to look and cried out, “Oh no! The seal box is gone!”

Bai Yutang had no time to ask more. He turned, left the yamen and gave chase straight down the road. Before long he saw two men running hard ahead of him. Running as he went, Bai Yutang pulled out a stone and threw it, and it struck the one behind square on the body. There was a clack — the sound of wood. The man pitched forward; he had been running so fast he could not stop himself, and thump, down he went in the dust, flat on his face for a good mouthful of muck. Bai Yutang was on him in a moment and stamped down hard on the back of his head and neck. Suddenly the man in front turned back and raised his hand, and a bowstring twanged. Stamping and stooping as he was, Bai Yutang had kept his eyes fixed on the man in front all along; when he saw him turn and raise his hand and heard the string, he knew a hidden weapon was coming and crouched down. The man came a step closer. Bai Yutang — what a man! — had a quick thought in his moment of danger and clapped his left hand to his face on purpose. The man in front, taking him for hit, came running up. Bai Yutang took his aim and let fly the stone in his right hand. In his haste the man had forgotten the old rule: when you throw a punch, watch out for the other man’s kick. Smack! The stone took him in the face. He gave a yelp and, never minding his partner, ran for his life in his pain. Bai Yutang did not chase him, but held down the man sprawled on the ground. He felt the man’s back: there was the seal box, and his heart filled with joy. Just then, with lanterns and torches, a crowd of runners came up behind; Yumo had told them that Fifth Master Bai had gone after the thieves, so they had followed to help. They found Bai Yutang holding a man down and calling for them. They all stepped up, untied the seal box and bound the thief. His face was covered in blood and his nose and mouth were swollen, from the fall and the stamping together. The runners carried the seal box and marched the thief along, and Bai Yutang followed behind them back to the yamen.
