Ya strangled yours truly — so where’d ya stash my four hunnerd taels? Hand ’em over quick an’ that’ll be the end of it.” And the man said, “What insolence, woman! I’ve never set eyes on you in my life. Who’s taken any silver of yours?” The woman grew more frantic than ever. “Ya lousy son of a bitch! Ya killed a man for his money, an’ now ya’re puttin’ on this act with yours truly?” Zhao Hu heard this and, without waiting for any explanations, told his man to take the other end of the silk cord that bound the Taoist and tie Li Bao up with it as well. Then off they went with the pair of them, making straight for the Kaifeng yamen.

Meanwhile the magistrate of Xiangfu County, finding that the top graduate Fan Zhongyu was mixed up in the case, had not dared to question anyone himself. He brought all the parties and witnesses to the Kaifeng yamen in person and gave Lord Bao a brief account of how matters stood. Lord Bao opened court at once and had Fan Zhongyu brought up first, with runners on either side to hold him. The moment Fan reached the court hall, he shouted, “You curs! Beat a gentleman, would you? Kill a gentleman, would you?” And with that he made to lay about him with his shoe. But the runners were quick: before he knew it, they had snatched the red shoe out of his hand. Then Fan Zhongyu began to rave and babble. Registrar Gongsun, standing by, saw that this was madness brought on by rage, with phlegm clouding his mind, and told Lord Bao that he would have to be treated with medicine. Lord Bao nodded his consent and had the runners take him under guard to Mr. Gongsun’s rooms.
包公又叫帶上白雄來。白雄朝上跪倒。包公問道：「你是甚麼人？作何生理？」白雄稟道：「小人白雄，在萬全山西南八寶村居住，打獵為生。那日從虎口內救下小兒，細問姓名家鄉住處，才知是自己的外甥。因此細細盤問，說我姐夫乘驢而來；故此尋至東山口外，見小榆樹上拴著一花驢，小人以為是我姐夫騎來的。不料路上遇見這個山西人，說此驢是他的，還合小人要他哥哥並銀子；因此我二人去找地方。卻見眾人圍著一人，這山西人一見說是他哥哥，向前相認。誰知他哥哥卻是婦人的聲音，不認他為兄弟，反將小人說是他的兄弟。求老爺與小人作主。」包公問道：「你姐夫叫甚麼名字？」白雄道：「小人姐夫范仲禹，乃湖廣武昌府江夏縣人氏。」包公聽了，正與新科狀元籍貫相同，點了點頭，叫他且自下去。

That’s why I went searching out beyond the eastern pass, and when I saw a dappled donkey tied to a little elm, I took it for the one my brother-in-law had ridden. But on the road I ran into this man from Shanxi. He said the donkey was his, and what’s more, he wanted his brother and his silver from me. So the two of us went to find the constable. Then we saw a crowd round a man, and the moment this man from Shanxi saw him, he said it was his brother and went up to him. But who’d have thought it? His brother spoke in a woman’s voice and wouldn’t own him as a brother — said I was his brother instead! I beg Your Excellency to see justice done for me.” “What is your brother-in-law’s name?” asked Lord Bao. “My brother-in-law is Fan Zhongyu,” said Bai Xiong, “from Jiangxia County, in Wuchang Prefecture, Huguang.” Lord Bao heard that this was the very place the new top graduate came from. He nodded and told him to stand down for the time being.
