Taking false for true, a brave man seizes the wrong suspect;Turning a mistake to account, a judge shrewdly uncovers the hidden gold

Now, Zhao Hu, got up as a beggar, found more and more people tagging along behind him, until in a fit of temper he lengthened his stride and ran like the wind for two or three li. Only when he had looked about him and seen no one did he slow his pace and walk on at his ease. While the crowd had been milling round him he had been so pleased with himself that he noticed nothing. But now that he was left alone, all his high spirits ebbed away, and he began to feel the chill, gust after gust. At first he could hold out against it; later he hunched over at the waist, and little by little he was clutching at his chest. When that was no help, he hugged his shoulders in both arms and went jogging and bobbing along. To make matters worse, the sun was sinking in the west and the autumn wind cut right through him: how could he stand it? His eyes darted this way and that. Over yonder he saw a ruined temple, its gate fallen in, its halls collapsed, only the east and west gable walls still standing on their own. He made for the foot of a gable wall and crouched down out of the north wind. He could not help regretting it: he should never have put on such a thin, cold costume; he ought to have worn a set of ragged padded clothes. In all things one must not be careless.

He was turning this over when he saw a man coming from over there, dressed in rags just like his own, but with a bundle of dry straw under his arm. The man went straight to a big willow tree, raised his arm and pushed the straw inside, smoothing it down. Then Zhao Hu saw him grip a willow branch, give a spring, and wriggle into a hollow in the tree. Looking at that man, Zhao Hu felt he was a good deal warmer than himself, and wished he could crawl in there too and get warm. He thought to himself, “It’s always the way: once a man’s eaten his fill and is warm, he forgets what hunger and cold are like. Take me, Zhao Hu: every day at Kaifeng I eat my fill and wear warm clothes — what a happy life! Today I come out on a secret inquiry, I meet this autumn wind, and I feel the cold something terrible. And there he goes into his tree hollow, with dry straw to lie on, too. The way I see it, that fellow’s a lot better off than me, a sixth-rank captain.” And the more he thought it, the harder he shivered.

Suddenly another man came along from over there, he too in tatters, and he too with an armful of dry straw, also making for this same dead willow. When he reached it, without a word he stuffed his straw in. Zhao Hu heard the man inside cry out, “Ow! What’s this?” He poked his head out to look. “Watch what you’re doing, can’t you? Why’ve you dumped a load of straw all over my head?” The man outside said, “Beg pardon, brother, I didn’t know. So you got here first. Well, can’t be helped — make a bit of room, make a bit of room. We two can squeeze in together: it’s warmer, and it’s not so lonely. Besides, I’ve got something to tell you.” As he spoke, he gripped a branch, gave a spring, and he too wriggled into the hollow. Then the first man was heard to say, “I had it nicely to myself for a good sleep, and now you have to come along. I suppose I’ll just have to sit up and meditate.” And the newcomer was heard to say, “A mansion may have a thousand rooms, but a man only sleeps in seven feet of it. We two may be poor, but we’ve got dry straw to lie on, snug and warm, and that’s not so bad. I’ll bet you there’s somebody out there right now worse off than you and me.”
