Young Ni pays a debt in silver, and Bao Xing calls at the county yamen;Magistrate Jin gives a horse, and Jiuru sets out for the capital

Now, when Old Zhang saw that Han Zhang had given him a whole ingot of silver, he said at once, “Officer, you think too much of it. What the young gentleman needs each day comes to very little — what call is there for so much silver? If you’re afraid he’ll go short, a little silver left behind would be plenty.” “Don’t refuse it, old sir,” said Han Zhang. “To refuse it is to say it’s too little.” “If you put it that way,” said Old Zhang, “I’ll do as you say.” And he quickly took the silver. Han Zhang went on, “I really must trouble you, old sir, to take good care of my nephew.” And to Jiuru he said, “Be patient and stay here, nephew. As soon as I’ve finished my official business, I’ll come straight back.” “Set your mind at rest, Uncle, and see to your business,” said Jiuru. “I’ll be here keeping Uncle Zhang company. I’ll be quite all right.” Han Zhang saw that Jiuru bore himself as composedly as a grown man, with nothing of a child’s ways about him. Not only was Second Master Han reassured; Old Zhang, hearing Deng Jiuru call him Uncle Zhang, was so delighted that his heart burst into bloom, and he said over and over, “You do me too much honour! Too much honour! Set your mind at rest, officer. Now that the young gentleman is in my care, of course I’ll look after him. You’ve no need to tell me.” Second Master Han clasped his hands in farewell, and Deng Jiuru made him a deep bow. Then Han Zhang left the tangyuan shop, looking back again and again, very loath to part. From then on Second Master Han made straight for Hangzhou, and Deng Jiuru settled down at the tangyuan shop. Of this no more.

Our story turns to Bao Xing. On His Excellency’s orders he had taken Fang Shan and Miss Yuzhi to Bao Family Village in Hefei County, and all that business was done. He paid his respects to the Old Master and the Old Mistress and kowtowed to take his leave, and they gave him fifty taels of silver. Next he paid his respects to the Elder Master and the Elder Mistress and took his leave, and they too gave him thirty taels. Then he paid his respects to the Second Master and the Second Mistress and took his leave, and they, since there was no getting out of it, gave him five taels of silver. He also went to Master Ning to take his leave. Then he told his attendant to saddle the horses and tie the baggage on tight, and they left Hefei County and travelled on, mile after winding mile.

One day they passed a manor where the trees grew thick and tangled and the buildings stood tall — a most forbidding place. Bao Xing thought to himself, “What sort of family is this, to have such towers and halls? It’s no old house of rank, and no retired official’s either. Who on earth lives here?” He was still pondering it when, without warning, a gun went off with a bang. The horse under him was terribly afraid of loud noises; with a whinny it leapt forward. Bao Xing was not ready for it either, and before he could help himself he fell from the saddle. The horse went charging off into the manor, snorting. Luckily Bao Xing was not hurt in the fall. His attendant quickly got down from his own horse to help him up. “It’s nothing,” said Bao Xing. “I’m not hurt. Hurry into the manor and get the horse back. I’ll stay here and mind the baggage.” The attendant did as he was told and went into the manor.
