Lecherous Fang Diao saves the steadfast Miss Zhu by mistake;Greedy He Bao meets the Purple-Bearded Elder on a narrow road

Now, when Ni Jizu heard the steadfast Miss Zhu call him back, he hurried to say, “Is there something more, miss?” “In all the rush I forgot one thing,” said Zhu Jiangzhen. “I have a token that I’ve worn since I was a little girl and never once taken off. When you rescue my father, give it to him, and it will be as good as seeing his daughter. Tell him I have sworn to keep myself pure: I will die before I am disgraced. Above all, tell my father not to worry about me.” With that she handed it to Ni Jizu, and added, “Take good care of yourself, Your Honour.” Ni Jizu took it and looked at it by the light of the lantern, and could not help crying out, “Aiyo! This lotus —” He had got no further when Ni Zhong came running back. “Quick, let’s go!” He clamped the Governor’s arm under his own and pulled him away. When Ni Jizu looked back, the back gate was already shut and the lantern light far behind.

Our story turns to Zhu Jiangzhen. As she came back from the garden, her heart was pounding. Suddenly a thought struck her, and she said to herself, “Never do a thing by halves. Why don’t I go to the dungeon now and set Jinniang free too? Wouldn’t that be fine?” She hurried to the dungeon. Since the prisoner was only a girl, the villain had set no one to guard her. Here too Miss Zhu had the keys at her waist. She unlocked the door and asked Jinniang whether she had anywhere to go. “I have an aunt not far from here,” said Jinniang. “If I let you go now,” said Zhu Jiangzhen, “do you know the way?” “My grandfather often took me there and back,” said Jinniang. “I know it.” “In that case,” said Zhu Jiangzhen, “come with me.” The two of them went back to the back gate of the garden. Jinniang thanked her over and over, and then she too fled for her life.

When Miss Zhu was back and could think quietly, she said to herself, “This is bad! What I’ve done is no small matter.” Then another thought came to her: “I wait on Madam Guo. Jealous as she is, she’s as fickle as water and willow catkins. If the villain coaxes her round and she wants to please her husband, then I can’t be sure I’ll escape disgrace. Ah! Live a hundred years, and still one must die. Besides, my father’s wrong is in the Governor’s hands now, so my wish is fulfilled. I’d do better to kill myself and be done with all this fear and dread. But where should I die? — I have it! I’ll hang myself in the dungeon. They’ll think Jinniang has hanged herself from the beam, and when they look closely they’ll find it’s me. Then they’ll know I was the one who let Jinniang go, and from Jinniang they’ll know it was I who freed the master and his servant too. By this death I’ll have made a name for myself.” Her mind made up, she went into the dungeon, untied her silk kerchief, knotted a noose and thrust her neck into it. She felt her fragrant soul float away, drifting, drifting, until it came to rest on a man’s body. Slowly she came to herself, and all she could hear was a voice saying, “A petty thief like you, daring to waylay folk with a cudgel — what a joke!”
