The Young Hero flings his silver about and drinks himself senseless;Old Ge grabs a pheasant, asks for trouble and gets hurt

Now, Shi Yun, seeing the youngster behave like this, felt rather awkward himself after all the fuss, and hastened to ask, “May I ask your honourable surname?” “Your little brother is Ai Hu,” said the youngster. “I’m on my way to Wohugou, and as I was passing I saw you all here drinking and making merry, and before I knew it my throat was dry. Since you kindly offer me wine, I accept your generosity with thanks. After you.” With that he strode in through the brushwood gate.

How, you may wonder, reader, did Ai Hu come to be here? Ever since he had sworn brotherhood with Shi Jun, he had travelled at his ease: five li made a day’s journey, and ten li counted as a stage. Whenever he came across good wine he might stay three days or five, sleeping when he was drunk and drinking again when he woke. In any case it was Jiang Ping’s silver, which Jiang Ping did not begrudge, so he spent it just as the fancy took him. Now, when the fishermen saw Zhang Li and Shi Yun bring in a youngster, none of them knew him, and they did no more than raise their joined hands in greeting. Shi Yun gave Ai Hu a place beside himself. Zhang Li took up the pot, poured a brimming cup and handed it to Ai Hu. Ai Hu made no polite show of refusing; he took it at once and drained it at a gulp. Shi Yun took the pot in turn and poured him another, and Ai Hu drank that too. Then he poured a cup for each of the two men, and one for himself to keep them company, and only then asked at leisure, “Just now, uncle, you said your house was celebrating a happy event. What’s the occasion?” Shi Yun explained it for him. Ai Hu laughed aloud. “So that’s it! Then congratulations are certainly in order.” With that he reached into the pouch at his belly, pulled out two ingots of silver and held them out to Zhang Li. “A small trifle. I hope you’ll do me the favour of accepting it.” How could Zhang Li agree to take it? Ai Hu pushed and pressed until he had stuffed it into the front of the old man’s coat.

Zhang Li had no choice but to thank him again and again. He turned and went into the house. “Mother,” he called, “a young gentleman just gave this as a gift for our girl’s celebration. Put it away safe.” His wife, Madam Li, took it and looked: two ingots of five taels each. She cried out in alarm, “Oh my! How can anyone give such a costly gift?” Just as they were speaking, Mudan came over. “Mother, what is it?” Zhang Li told her about the guest and his gift. “Is this someone you’ve long known, Father?” asked Mudan. “No, I don’t know him at all.” “If you don’t know him,” said Mudan, “then you and he are strangers, met by chance like duckweed drifting on the water, and for him to give such a lavish gift — there’s no telling what kind of man he is. How do we know he isn’t some villain or desperado? To my mind, we’d do better not to accept it.” “The girl is right,” said Madam Li. “You go and give it back to him straight away, old man.” “Our girl really does think of everything,” said Zhang Li. “I’ll go and give it back.” He took the silver again and went outside.
