The Dharma guardians conjure a farmstead to shelter the Great Sage;Lingji of Mount Sumeru subdues the wind demon

Meanwhile, the fifty battered little demons came stumbling into the cave with their torn flags and broken drums. “Great King,” they reported, “Tiger Vanguard was no match for that hairy-faced monk. He’s been chased down the eastern slope.” The old demon was deeply troubled. He was bowing his head in silence, thinking over a plan, when another little demon who guarded the front entrance came to say, “Great King, Tiger Vanguard has been killed by that hairy-faced monk. He’s dragged him to the door and is shouting insults and challenging us!” At this the old demon grew still more troubled. “The fellow has no sense at all! I haven’t even eaten his Master, and he goes and kills my vanguard. Infuriating! Infuriating!” He called, “Bring my armour! I’ve only heard people speak of this Pilgrim Sun, or whatever he is. I’ll go out and see what sort of nine-headed, eight-tailed monk he is, then bring him in to pay for Tiger Vanguard with his life.” The little demons hurriedly carried out his armour. The old demon dressed and armed himself, seized a three-pronged steel fork and led his band of demons bounding out of the cave.

The Great Sage stood waiting outside the entrance. As the demon came out, he saw that he was a fierce warrior indeed. What was he wearing? This is what he saw:

A golden helmet flashes in the sun;golden armour holds the light.Pheasant tails stream from the helmet’s tassel;a pale goose-yellow silk robe covers the mail.Coiling dragons gleam upon the armour’s fastening cords;the breastplate dazzles the eyes with its shine.Deerskin bootsare dyed with pagoda-tree flowers;a brocade apronis trimmed with willow-leaf velvet. In his hand he holds a sharp three-pronged steel fork,no less imposing than Erlang, the Manifest Saint, in his day.

The old demon came out of the entrance and shouted fiercely, “Which of you is Pilgrim Sun?” Pilgrim stood with his foot planted on the tiger monster’s skin, his As-You-Will iron cudgel in his hand. “Your grandfather Sun is here!” he answered. “Send my Master out!” The monster looked him over closely: Pilgrim’s body was small and unsightly, his face thin and wasted, and he was less than four feet tall. He laughed. “Pitiful! Pitiful! I thought you’d be some hero no one could ever knock down. So you’re just a sickly bag of bones!” Pilgrim laughed. “You son of mine, you have no eye for people! Your grandfather may be little, but if you’d care to give him a blow on the head with your fork’s shaft, he’ll grow three feet.” The monster said, “Brace that head of yours and take a blow from me!” The Great Sage showed not the slightest fear. The monster did indeed bring the shaft down on him. He bent at the waist and grew a full three feet, until he stood about ten feet tall. Alarmed, the demon checked his steel fork and shouted, “Pilgrim Sun! Why bring these protective transformations to perform at my door? Stop playing tricks. Come forward and let us put our abilities to the test!” Pilgrim laughed. “Son, as the saying goes,

‘If you mean to show mercy, don’t raise your hand;once you raise it, show no mercy.’

Your grandfather has a very heavy hand. I’m afraid you won’t stand a blow from this cudgel.” The monster would hear no more. He spun his steel fork and thrust straight at Pilgrim’s chest. But the Great Sage was just what they call a skilled hand who never hurries — and a hurried hand has no skill. He swung his iron cudgel into the “Black dragon skims the ground” stance, knocked the fork aside and struck back at the monster’s head. At the mouth of Yellow Wind Cave, the two fought a fine battle:

The demon king rages;the Great Sage displays his might. The demon king rages, determined to take Pilgrim’s life for his vanguard’s;the Great Sage displays his might, intent on catching the spirit and saving the elder. The fork comes, the cudgel blocks;the cudgel goes, the fork meets it.One is the commander-in-chief who holds the mountain;one is the Handsome Monkey King who guards the Dharma. At first they battle in the dust;then both rise into the air.The tempered steel forkhas bright, sharp points;the As-You-Will cudgelhas a black body and golden bands.Whoever is pierced will send his soul to the Underworld;whoever is struck will surely meet the King of the Underworld. All depends on quick hands and keen eyes;great strength and a sturdy body are needed too. Both fight heedless of life and death —who can tell which will be safe and which will be hurt?
