A ghost king visits Tang Sanzang by night;Wukong transforms by divine magic to lure the Infant

Now, Sanzang sat beneath the lamp in the meditation hall of Baolin Monastery, reciting the Liang Emperor’s Water Repentance for a while, then reading the Peacock Sutra for a while. Only at the third watch did he put the scriptures away in their bag. He was about to rise and go to bed when a sudden clatter sounded outside the door, and a fierce wind came rushing through. Afraid it would blow out the lamp, the elder hurriedly shielded it with the sleeve of his robe. But the light kept brightening and dimming, and he began to tremble with fear. Then weariness came over him, and he leaned on the scripture desk and dozed. His eyes were closed in a haze of sleep, yet his mind was still aware. His ears hummed, and he heard the chill wind whistling outside the window. What a wind! Truly:

Sighing and soughing, drifting and surging.Sighing and soughing, it sends fallen leaves flying;drifting and surging, it rolls up the floating clouds. All the stars in the sky grow dim;dust and sand scatter over the whole earth. One gust fierce, another gentle. When gentle, it draws clear notes from pine and bamboo;when fierce, it churns the waves of rivers and lakes.Mountain birds cannot settle, their cries caught in their throats;sea fish find no rest, leaping and splashing.Doors and windows tear loose from halls to east and west;gods and ghosts rage in galleries front and rear.Vases in the Buddha hall are blown to the ground;glass lamps shake and fall, and the lights of wisdom dim.Incense burners tip, their ashes scattering;candle stands lean, their flames trailing smoke.Banners and precious canopies sway and break;bell and drum towers shake down to their foundations.

In his hazy dream the elder heard the wind pass, then a faint cry of “Master!” outside the meditation hall. He suddenly raised his head and looked, still dreaming. A man stood outside the door, drenched from head to foot, tears streaming from his eyes, his mouth calling “Master!” over and over. Sanzang half rose. “Are you some goblin or fiend, some spirit or evil demon, come in the dead of night to play tricks on me? I am no slave to desire or anger. I am an upright monk, sent by imperial command from the Great Tang in the Eastern Land to the Western Heaven, to pay homage to the Buddha and seek the scriptures. I have three disciples under me, heroes who subdue dragons and tigers, stalwart men who sweep away monsters and destroy demons. If they see you, they will tear your flesh and grind your bones to dust. I say this out of great compassion, with your welfare at heart. Slip away at once and flee far from here. Do not come to my meditation hall.” Leaning against the hall, the man said, “Master, I am no demon or monster, no goblin or evil god.” Sanzang said, “If you are none of these, what brings you here so late at night?” The man said, “Master, open your eyes and take a look at me.” The elder fixed his gaze on him and looked closely. Ah! This is what he saw:

On his head a crown that soared toward Heaven; at his waist a belt of green jade; on his body an ochre-yellow robe with flying dragons and dancing phoenixes; on his feet a pair of cloud-toed, embroidered carefree shoes; in his hand a white jade tablet bearing the Dipper and the stars. His face was like the East Peak Emperor of Long Life, his form like Lord Wenchang who Opens Enlightenment.

At the sight Sanzang turned pale with astonishment. He hurriedly bowed and called out loudly, “Your Majesty, of what dynasty? Please sit down.” He reached to support the man, but his hands met empty air. Turning back, he sat down and looked again. The same man was still there. The elder asked, “Your Majesty, where are you emperor? Of what kingdom are you king? Surely your realm is in turmoil and treacherous ministers have abused you, forcing you to flee for your life here at midnight. Whatever you have to say, tell me.” Tears ran down the man’s cheeks as he spoke of the past; grief gathered in his brows as he told what had brought him here. “Master, Our home is due west, only some forty li from here. A city stands there, where Our rule began.” Sanzang asked, “What is the place called?” The man said, “To tell you the truth, Master, when We founded Our realm, We named it Wuji.” Sanzang said, “Your Majesty, what has happened to bring you here in such alarm?” The man said, “Master, five years ago Our land suffered a drought. Not a blade of grass grew, and the people starved to death. It was grievous indeed.” Sanzang nodded and smiled. “Your Majesty, the ancients said, ‘When the realm is upright, Heaven’s heart is favourable.’ Surely you failed to show kindness and care for your people. Now that famine has come, why flee from the city? Go and open your granaries, give relief to the people, repent your former faults and begin doing good again. Pardon those unjustly condemned through abuses of the law. Then Heaven’s heart will be at peace with you, and the winds and rains will come in season.” The man said, “Our granaries were empty; money and grain were gone. The civil and military officials drew no salaries, and We Ourselves ate no meat. Following Yu the Great’s example when he tamed the floods, We shared the people’s hardships and joys, bathed and fasted, and burned incense and prayed day and night. This went on for three years, until the rivers ran dry and the wells were empty. Just when all was desperate, a Complete Perfection Daoist arrived from Mount Zhongnan. He could summon wind and rain and turn stones to gold. First he met Our civil and military officials, then he met Us. We at once invited him to pray upon an altar, and his prayers were answered. At the crack of his command tablet, a downpour began within moments. We had hoped for only three feet of rain, but he said that after so long a drought it would not soak the ground enough, and gave Us two inches more. Seeing such devotion to what was right, We exchanged eight bows with him and called him Our brother.” Sanzang said, “That was an immense blessing for Your Majesty.” The man said, “Where was the blessing?” Sanzang said, “With such powers, whenever you wanted rain you could have the Daoist make it rain, and whenever you wanted gold you could have him turn stones to gold. What could you possibly lack, to make you leave your palace and come here?” The man said, “We shared his meals and sleeping quarters for only two years. Then spring came again: red apricot and lovely peach trees opened their blossoms and unfurled their petals. Men and women from every household, young nobles everywhere, all went out to enjoy the spring. At that time the civil and military officials had returned to their offices, and the consorts to their courts. Hand in hand, We walked slowly with the Daoist into the imperial garden. We came to the Octagonal Glazed-Tile Well. He threw something into it, We know not what, and ten thousand rays of golden light shone from the well. He coaxed Us to the edge to look at some treasure, then suddenly turned murderous. With a splash he pushed Us into the well, covered its mouth with a stone slab, heaped earth over it and planted a banana tree on top. Pity Us! We have been dead for three years, a wronged ghost whose life was lost in a well.”
