Now, the Great Sage Sun and his two brothers lowered their clouds and went straight into the court. There the king, his ministers, the crown prince and the queens bowed to receive them and thank them for their kindness. Pilgrim told sovereign and subjects how the Bodhisattva had subdued the demon and taken the monster away, and every one of them bowed in worship again and again. While they were all rejoicing, the palace eunuch came to report, “Your Majesty, four more monks have arrived outside.” Bajie said in alarm, “Brother, can the demon have used magic to counterfeit the Bodhisattva Manjushri and deceive us, then turned into monks to come and match wits with us?” Pilgrim said, “What nonsense!” He at once ordered them brought in for a look.
The civil and military officials passed on the command to admit them. When Pilgrim looked, they proved to be monks from Baolin Monastery, carrying the heaven-piercing crown, the green jade belt, the ochre-yellow robe and the carefree shoes. Pilgrim said joyfully, “Just in time, just in time!” He called the Daoist over, had him take off his headcloth and put on the heaven-piercing crown, remove his cloth robe and don the ochre-yellow robe, untie his cord and fasten on the green jade belt, slip off his monk’s shoes and step into the carefree shoes. He told the crown prince to bring out the white jade tablet for him to hold, then urged him to go up into the hall and proclaim himself sovereign. As the old saying has it, “The court cannot be without a ruler for a single day.” But the emperor would not take his seat. Weeping, he knelt in the middle of the steps and said, “We have been dead for three years. Now that the Masters have brought Us back to life, how could We dare presume to call Ourselves sovereign again? Let one of the Masters be king. We shall gladly take Our wife and child outside the city and live as commoners. That would be enough.” Sanzang would have none of it; his heart was set only on paying homage to the Buddha and seeking scriptures. Then they asked Pilgrim, who laughed. “To tell you all the truth, if Old Sun cared to be emperor, he would have been emperor in every one of the world’s myriad kingdoms and Nine Provinces by now. But we are used to being monks, idle and easygoing like this. Become an emperor, and you must let the hair grow on your head. No sleep at dusk, no rest at the fifth watch. A report from the frontier leaves your mind uneasy; a famine or disaster leaves you sick with worry. How could we get used to that? You go on being your emperor, and I shall go on being a monk, cultivating merit along the road.” Unable to persuade him despite all his pleas, the king had to ascend the throne hall, face south as sovereign and proclaim a general amnesty throughout the realm. He bestowed titles and gifts on the monks from Baolin Monastery and sent them home. Then he opened the Eastern Pavilion and gave a banquet for the Tang Monk. At the same time he issued a command to summon painters, who made portraits of the Tang Monk and his three disciples with their joyful faces, to be honoured in the Hall of Golden Chimes.

Having set the kingdom to rights, Master and disciples would not stay long. They wished to take leave of the king and travel west. The emperor, the queens and consorts of the three palaces, the crown prince and the ministers presented the Masters with the realm’s precious treasures, gold, silver, satin and silk to repay their kindness. Sanzang accepted not so much as a fraction. He had only his travel document endorsed, then urged Wukong and the others to saddle the horse and set off early. The king felt deeply embarrassed. He had his royal carriage prepared and asked the Tang Monk to take his seat in it. The two ranks of civil and military officials led the way, while the king, the queens and consorts of the three palaces and the crown prince, all his family together, held the wheel hubs and pushed the wheels to escort him beyond the city walls. Only then did Sanzang step down from the dragon carriage and take leave of them all. The king said, “Master, on the day you return from the Western Heaven with the scriptures, you must be sure to visit Our realm once more.” Sanzang said, “Your disciple accepts the command.” With tears brimming in his eyes, the emperor returned with his ministers.
