A lyric says:
Sweep the ground of the heart again and again;clear worldly feelings away with care.Never let pits and trenches trap Vairocana.Only when the original substance stays forever purecan you speak of the primal beginning.Trim the candle of your nature;at Caoxi let breath flow in and out.Do not let the monkey and horse breathe loud and rough.Keep the breath unbroken, day and night:only then is your practice shown. This lyric, to the tune ‘Son of the Southern Bough’, tells how the Tang Monk escaped the frozen peril of Heaven-Reaching River and rode the white turtle to the farther bank. The master and his three disciples followed the main road west.It was the depth of winter: the woods lay dim and faint within the haze, and the sharp bones of the mountains stood clear beyond the water.

As they went along, another great mountain suddenly barred their way. The path was narrow, the cliffs high, the rocks many and the ridges steep: neither men nor horse could advance easily. Sanzang drew rein and called, “Disciples!” Pilgrim Sun brought Zhu Bajie and Sha Monk forward, and they stood beside him. “What are Master’s commands?” Sanzang said, “Look how high that mountain is ahead. I fear there may be tigers and wolves making mischief, or demonic beasts to harm us. This time you must take care!” Pilgrim said, “Master, set your mind at rest. The three of us brothers are of one heart and purpose, turned to the right path and seeking the truth. With our arts for sweeping away monsters and subduing demons, why should we fear tigers, wolves or demonic beasts?” Hearing this, Sanzang could only put his worries aside and go on. At the mouth of the valley he urged his horse up the cliff path, raised his head and looked closely. What a mountain!
Jagged peaks tower;sheer ridges loom.Jagged peaks tower into the starry heavens;sheer ridges loom against the blue sky.Tumbled rocks lie like crouching tigers;old pines hang slantwise like flying dragons. On the ridge the birds sing sweet and lovely tunes;before the cliffs plum blossom gives a rich, rare scent. The brook runs murmuring out, icy cold;clouds cross the summit, dark and threatening. Then there is drifting snow, a biting wind, hungry tigers roaring through the mountain.Winter crows choose tree after tree but find no roost;wild deer search for shelter, leaving tracks that wander everywhere.Pity the travellers who can scarcely take a step, brows furrowed, faces troubled, heads wrapped against the cold.

The four braved the snow and cold, shivering as they crossed the high peaks and steep ridges. Far ahead in a hollow they saw tall towers and quiet houses. The Tang Monk called happily from his saddle, “Disciples, we have been hungry and cold all day. Luckily there are towers and houses in that hollow. They must be a farmstead, a hermitage, an abbey or a monastery. Let us beg some food there and eat before we go on.” Pilgrim opened his eyes wide to look. Over that place he saw ominous clouds lurking and evil vapours streaming. He turned to the Tang Monk. “Master, that is no good place.” Sanzang said, “There are towers and pavilions in plain sight. How can it be no good place?” Pilgrim laughed. “Master, what do you know of it? There are many demons and evil spirits on the western road who are skilled at conjuring up estates. Towers, houses, halls, galleries, pavilions — whatever they like, they can make it with a touch to fool people. You know the saying ‘The dragon has nine kinds of offspring’. One of them is called the shen. The shen sends out a shining breath that looks like towers and shallow pools. When a great river is shrouded in murk, the shen puts on this display. If birds or magpies fly by, they are sure to come and rest their wings. Whether they number a thousand or ten thousand, he swallows them all in a single breath. It is a most deadly trick for harming people. The vapours over that place look fierce and evil. We must not go in.”
