Wukong makes havoc in Golden Pouch Cave; The Buddha hints at the demon’s master

Now, the Great Sage Sun had recovered his gold-banded cudgel, beaten his way out through the doors and leapt onto the high peak. He faced the gods with a heart full of joy. Heavenly King Li asked, “How did it go this time?” Pilgrim said, “Old Sun transformed himself and slipped into his cave. That monster was drinking to his victory, singing and dancing harder than ever. I never did find out where his treasure was. I went round behind him and suddenly heard horses neighing and dragons roaring, so I knew those were things from the Fire Department. My gold-banded cudgel was leaning against the east wall. Old Sun took it in his hand and beat his way out all the way.” The gods said, “You’ve got your treasure back. When will we get ours?” Pilgrim said, “No trouble, no trouble! Now I have this iron cudgel, whatever it takes, I will knock him down and recover your treasures for you.”

As they spoke, gongs and drums sounded together below the slope, and the shouting shook the earth. It was the Rhinoceros King, leading his band of spirits in pursuit of Pilgrim. At the sight, Pilgrim cried, “Good, good, good! Just what I wanted. Gentlemen, stay seated while Old Sun goes to catch him again.” Splendid Great Sage! He raised his iron cudgel and met him with a blow straight at his face, shouting, “Wretched demon, where do you think you’re going? Watch my cudgel!” The monster blocked it with his spear and cursed, “Thieving monkey! You have no manners at all. How dare you rob me of my belongings in broad daylight?” Pilgrim said, “You damned beast, you don’t know when you’re about to die! You used your ring to snatch my things in broad daylight. Which of those things was yours? Don’t run! Take a blow from your old lord’s cudgel!” The monster swung his spear to parry. What a fine battle!

The Great Sage shows his fierce might;the demon will not yield. Both strive to prove their courage;which will consent to stop? This one’s iron cudgel is like a dragon’s tail;that one’s long spear like a python’s head. This one’s cudgel sweeps through its moves with the roar of wind;that one’s spear parries with the mighty flow of water.Coloured mist grows thick and dims the mountain ridge;auspicious clouds hang heavy, and the forest grieves.Birds throughout the sky all still their wings;wolves and beasts in every field all draw their heads back in.Over there the little demons shout;over here Pilgrim gathers all his vigour. An iron cudgel no one can withstand,it has fought its way ten thousand miles across the West. That long spear is a match for it indeed, reigning supreme, forever guarding Golden Pouch. This meeting will not end in peace:neither will rest until the stronger is known.

The demon king and the Great Sage Sun fought for three double-hours without a victor, and already evening was drawing near. Bracing his long spear, the demon said, “Wukong, stop! With Heaven and earth going dark, this is no time to test our fighting skills. Let us each have a rest and try again tomorrow morning.” Pilgrim cursed, “Be quiet, you wretched beast! Old Sun is only just warming up. What do I care if it’s late? I mean to settle which of us wins and which loses.” The monster gave a shout, feinted with his spear and fled for his life. Leading his demons, he withdrew his weapons, went back into the cave and shut the doors tight.

The Great Sage had scarcely returned, cudgel in hand, when the heavenly gods congratulated him from the edge of the slope. “A mighty Great Sage Equal to Heaven indeed! Your true abilities have neither measure nor end.” Pilgrim laughed. “You flatter me, you flatter me!” Heavenly King Li came forward and said, “This is no empty praise. You truly are a fine hero. That bout was no less impressive than when you eluded the Nets of Heaven and Earth.” Pilgrim said, “Let’s leave the old stories alone. After that fight with Old Sun, the demon must be tired. I can’t complain of hard work myself. All of you sit here at your ease while I go back into the cave and find out about his ring. I must steal it, catch the monster and recover your weapons, so I can return them to you and you can go back to Heaven.” The prince said, “It is late now. Why not sleep for a night and go tomorrow morning?” Pilgrim laughed. “This young fellow knows nothing of the world! Whoever heard of a thief choosing broad daylight to do his work? For this kind of pilfering, you must come and go by night, without anyone knowing a thing. That’s how the trade is done!” Fire Virtue and the Thunder God said, “Say no more, Third Prince. We know nothing of this business. The Great Sage is an old hand, well versed in the tricks. Let him take advantage of the moment: first, the demon chief is worn out; second, the dark night leaves him off his guard. Please go quickly, go quickly!”
