Never forget through all twelve hours; gather the full work of a hundred ticks. In five years, a hundred and eight thousand circuits: do not let the divine water dry, nor let the fire flare up in grief.
The wild chrysanthemums shed their last flowers;new plum buds tenderly unfold.Village after village gathers in the grain;everywhere fragrant broth is eaten.Leaves fall from the level woods, revealing distant hills;frost thickens by winding streams, the deep ravines lie clear.The breath of Yingzhong comes;creatures settle in their winter dens.Pure yin holds sway;the month’s ruler is Xuanming.Water’s virtue flourishes;Shun’s sun cherishes clear skies.Earth’s breath descends;Heaven’s breath rises.The rainbow hides without a trace;ice begins to form on pools and ponds.Vines hang like ropes from cliffs, their blossoms spent;pine and bamboo grow greener in the gathering cold.
四眾行夠多時，前又遇城池相近。唐僧勒住馬，叫徒弟：「悟空，你看那廂樓閣崢嶸，是個甚麼去處？」行者擡頭觀看，乃是一座城池。真個是：
龍蟠形勢，虎踞金城。四垂華蓋近，百轉紫墟平。玉石橋欄排巧獸，黃金臺座列賢明。真個是神洲都會，天府瑤京。萬里邦畿固，千年帝業隆。蠻夷拱服君恩遠，海岳朝元聖會盈。御階潔淨，輦路清寧。酒肆歌聲鬧，花樓喜氣生。未央宮外長春樹，應許朝陽彩鳳鳴。
行者道：「師父，那座城池是一國帝王之所。」八戒笑道：「天下府有府城，縣有縣城，怎麼就見是帝王之所？」行者道：「你不知帝王之居，與府縣自是不同。你看他四面有十數座門，週圍有百十餘里，樓臺高聳，雲霧繽紛。非帝京邦國，何以有此壯麗？」沙僧道：「哥哥眼明，雖識得是帝王之處，卻喚做甚麼名色？」行者道：「又無牌匾旌號，何以知之？須到城中詢問，方可知也。」

行者道：「师父，那座城池是一国帝王之所。」八戒笑道：「天下府有府城，县有县城，怎么就见是帝王之所？」行者道：「你不知帝王之居，与府县自是不同。你看他四面有十数座门，周围有百十余里，楼台高耸，云雾缤纷。非帝京邦国，何以有此壮丽？」沙僧道：「哥哥眼明，虽识得是帝王之处，却唤做甚么名色？」行者道：「又无牌匾旌号，何以知之？须到城中询问，方可知也。」
The four had travelled a good while when they came within sight of another city. The Tang Monk reined in his horse and called to his disciple, “Wukong, look at those towering halls and pavilions over there. What place is that?” Pilgrim raised his head and looked: it was a walled city. Truly:
Its setting coils like a dragon;its mighty walls crouch like a tiger.Splendid canopies draw near on every side;winding ways level out within the purple precincts.Finely carved beasts line the jade and stone bridge rails;wise and worthy men stand ranked on golden terraces.Truly a great city in the divine land,a jewelled capital in a heavenly realm.Ten thousand li of royal territory stand secure;a thousand years of imperial rule flourish.Barbarians bow in submission, the ruler’s grace reaching far;seas and mountains pay homage, filling the sacred assembly.The imperial steps are spotless;the carriage roads peaceful and clear.Songs clamour in the wine shops;joy fills the painted pleasure towers.Outside Weiyang Palace stand trees of everlasting spring,fit for bright phoenixes to greet the morning sun.
Pilgrim said, “Master, that city is the seat of a kingdom’s ruler.” Bajie laughed. “Every prefecture has its prefectural city and every county its county town. How can you tell at a glance that a ruler lives there?” Pilgrim said, “You don’t understand. A ruler’s residence is naturally different from a prefecture or county. Look: a dozen gates and more on its four sides, over a hundred li round, lofty towers and terraces, clouds and mist swirling about. How could it be so magnificent unless it were a royal capital?” Sha Monk said, “Elder Brother has sharp eyes. You can tell it’s a ruler’s seat, but what is it called?” Pilgrim said, “There’s no signboard or banner to tell us. How should I know? We must go into the city and ask.”
長老策馬，須臾到門。下馬過橋，進門觀看。只見六街三市，貨殖通財；又見衣冠隆盛，人物豪華。正行時，忽見有十數個和尚，一個個披枷戴鎖，沿門乞化，著實的藍縷不堪。三藏嘆曰：「兔死狐悲，物傷其類。」叫：「悟空，你上前去問他一聲，為何這等遭罪？」行者依言，即叫：「那和尚，你是那寺裡的？為甚事披枷戴鎖？」眾僧跪倒道：「爺爺，我等是金光寺負屈的和尚。」行者道：「金光寺坐落何方？」眾僧道：「轉過隅頭就是。」行者將他帶在唐僧前，問道：「怎生負屈，你說我聽。」眾僧道：「爺爺，不知你們是那方來的，我等似有些面善。不敢在此奉告，請到荒山，具說苦楚。」長老道：「也是，我們且到他那寺中去，仔細詢問緣由。」

The elder urged his horse on and soon reached the gate. He dismounted, crossed the bridge and went inside to look about. The streets and markets were busy with goods and trade, and everywhere he saw fine clothes and prosperous people. As they walked, they suddenly came upon a dozen monks and more, each wearing a cangue and chains, begging from door to door in pitiful rags. Sanzang sighed. “When the rabbit dies, the fox grieves; creatures mourn their own kind.” He called, “Wukong, go and ask them why they are suffering like this.” Pilgrim did as he was told. “You monks! Which monastery are you from? What have you done to be put in cangues and chains?” The monks fell to their knees. “My lord, we are wrongfully accused monks from Golden Light Monastery.” Pilgrim asked, “Where is Golden Light Monastery?” “Just round the corner,” they said. Pilgrim brought them before the Tang Monk and asked, “How have you been wronged? Tell me.” The monks said, “My lord, we don’t know where you have come from, but your faces seem somehow familiar. We dare not tell you here. Please come to our humble monastery, and we will explain our suffering in full.” The elder said, “Quite right. Let us go to their monastery and inquire carefully into the cause.”
