Pilgrim uses a false name to subdue the monstrous hou;Guanyin reveals her sacred form to subdue the demon king

Form has always been emptiness;emptiness is likewise form.If you grasp the Buddhist truth of form and emptiness, what need to roast and refine cinnabar?Cultivate virtue to the full, never slacken;labour at the practice, endure its bitter trials. One day, when your deeds are complete, you will attend Heaven’s court;your immortal face will stay forever unchanged.

Now, the Rival of the Year God shut the front and rear gates tight and searched for Pilgrim, shouting and raging until dusk without finding a trace. He sat in the Skinning Pavilion, mustered the demons and issued his orders. At every gate they were to ring bells, call out the watch, beat drums and knock their wooden clappers. Each had his bow strung and his sabre drawn, keeping the night watches.

The Great Sage Sun had turned himself into a sluggish fly and was clinging beside the gate. Seeing how closely the front was guarded, he spread his wings and flew to the entrance of the rear palace to look about. There he saw the Queen of the Golden Sacred Palace bent over her imperial desk, tears trickling down and faint sobs sounding. Pilgrim flew inside, alighted gently on her loose, cloud-black hair and listened to what she was crying about. Before long her grief broke out in a cry. “My lord, you and I:

In a former life we burned incense with broken tips;in this life we have met a wretched demon king. Our phoenix pair has been parted three years—when shall we meet? Our mandarin ducks live apart in sorrow. The elder you sent had scarcely brought us wordwhen our happy bond was dashed and his life was lost. All because the golden bells’ workings were beyond his understanding,my longing runs wilder than before.”

At these words Pilgrim moved behind her ear and called softly, “Your Ladyship, do not be afraid. I am still Elder Sun, the holy monk your kingdom sent. I haven’t lost my life. I was simply too impatient. I stole the golden bells from the dressing table, and while you were drinking with the demon king I slipped away to the pavilion in front. I couldn’t resist opening the bundle to look. Without meaning to, I pulled at the cotton plugging their mouths. A bell rang once, and out burst smoke, fire and yellow sand. I lost my head, dropped the bells and revealed my own form. I fought hard with my iron cudgel but couldn’t get out. Afraid he would kill me, I turned myself into a little fly and clung to the gate hinge. I’ve been hiding there ever since. The demon king keeps an ever closer watch and won’t open the gates. Once more, use a wife’s courtesies to coax him in here to bed. Then I can get free and set about finding another way to rescue you.”
