Old hatred stirs feeling and brews deadly poison; The Mind Lord meets a demon and luckily breaks his light

Now, the Great Sage Sun helped the Tang Monk along, and with Bajie and Sha Monk they hurried onto the highway and continued west. Before long they saw a place of towers one behind another and lofty halls. The Tang Monk reined in his horse. “Disciples, what sort of place is that?” Pilgrim raised his head to look. This is what he saw:

Mountains ring the towers;streams wind round the pavilions.Thick stands of mingled trees before the gate;bright, fragrant wildflowers outside the grounds.White egrets roost among the willows, flawless jade within the mist;Yellow orioles sing among the peach trees, coloured gold within the fire.Wild deer in pairs tread idly, care forgotten, on the green grass carpet;Mountain birds in pairs fly calling, singing high among the red treetops.Just like Liu and Ruan’s cave on Mount Tiantai;no less than the immortals’ home in the Celestial Garden.

Pilgrim reported, “Master, that place is neither a prince’s mansion nor a rich man’s house. It looks like a hermitage, abbey or monastery. We’ll know for certain when we get there.” At this Sanzang flicked his whip and urged the horse on. Master and disciples came to the gate and looked. A stone tablet set above it bore the three characters “Yellow Flower Abbey”. Sanzang dismounted. Bajie said, “Yellow Flower Abbey is a Daoist’s home. We might as well go in and meet him. Our clothes and caps may differ, but we cultivate ourselves just the same.” Sha Monk said, “Quite right. We can see the sights and let the horse rest too. If it’s convenient, we can arrange some vegetarian food for Master.”

The elder agreed, and all four went in. At the second gate they saw a pair of Spring Festival verses:

“Yellow Sprout and White Snow: the immortals’ dwelling;jade herbs and precious flowers: the Daoist’s home.”

Pilgrim laughed. “This is one of those Daoists who burn thatch, refine elixirs, tend furnaces and carry pots.” Sanzang gave him a pinch. “Mind your words, mind your words. We don’t know him, and he’s no relation of ours. We’re only calling for a little while. What business is it of yours?” Before he had finished speaking, they passed through the second gate. The main hall was shut tight. Under the eastern gallery sat a Daoist, rolling medicinal pills. Look at how he was dressed:

A bright red cap inlaid with gold, a robe of deepest black, green shoes with cloud-shaped toes, and a yellow Master Lü sash. His face was iron-dark;his eyes like brilliant stars. His nose stood high and large like a Huihui’s;his lips turned out and gaped like a Tatar’s.Thunder lurked within his Daoist heart:a true adept who tamed the tiger and subdued the dragon.

At the sight Sanzang called out in a sharp voice, “Old immortal, this poor monk greets you!” The Daoist jerked his head up and started in alarm. He dropped the medicine in his hands, adjusted his hairpin, straightened his clothes and came down the steps to meet them. “Venerable Master, forgive me for not welcoming you. Please come inside and sit.” The elder gladly went up into the hall. When the door was opened, he saw sacred images of the Three Pure Ones, with an incense burner and incense on the altar. He took some incense, set it in the burner and made three rounds of obeisance before exchanging greetings with the Daoist. Then he and his disciples sat down in the seats for guests. The Daoist called urgently for his young attendants to serve tea. Two boys went inside to find a tray, wash the cups, wipe the spoons and prepare the tea and fruit. Their bustling about soon disturbed those enemies of ours.

The seven female demons of Silk-Coil Cave had studied under the same teacher as this Daoist. After putting on their old clothes and calling out their sons, they had come straight here. They were in the back cutting out clothes when they saw the boy preparing tea. “Boy, what guests have come to keep you so busy?” The young attendant said, “Four monks came in just now. Master told us to serve tea.” The demons asked, “Is there a plump, fair-faced monk?” “Yes.” “And one with a long snout and big ears?” “Yes.” “Hurry and take in the tea. Give your master a look and ask him to come inside. We have something urgent to tell him.” Sure enough, the boy took five cups of tea out. The Daoist gathered up his robe and with both hands offered one to Sanzang, then served Bajie, Sha Monk and Pilgrim. When they had drunk, the cups were collected. The boy gave him a look, and the Daoist half rose. “Please remain seated, gentlemen.” He told the boy, “Put down the tray and attend our guests. I’ll be back in a moment.” The elder, his disciples and one boy went out onto the hall terrace to admire the sights. We shall leave them there.
